This paper presents the experiment results for a CFT column confined by carbon fiber sheets(CFSs) under an axial load. Nine specimens were constructed and axial compression tests were conducted. The main experiment parameters were diameter-thickness ratio(D/t), reinforcing CFSa, and the attachment of a cushion gap between surface of steel tube and CFSs. The load-displacement curves of the specimens were obtained from the compression tests. Finally, it was concluded that the CFT column with a gap had grater ductility capacity improvement that the CFT column confined by CFSs.

A column test was performed far a new-type column with a quasi static test. An internally confined hollow reinforced concrete column with a corrugated steel tube (ICH RC-CT column) was tested to evaluate its seismic performance. And also, a general solid RC column was tested fur the comparison. The test was performed as planned drift levels. The lateral displacements and the lateral loads of column specimens were measured during tests. From the test results, the ICH RC-CT column showed smaller energy absorbing capacity than a solid RC column but showed the almost equal energy ductility and equivalent viscous damping ratio to those of the solid RC column.
This paper presents the behavior and design of axially loaded normal and steel fiber reinforced concrete in-filled steel tube (SFRCFT) columns, to examine the contribution of steel fibers on the compressive strength of the composite columns. Non-linear finite element analysis model (FEA) using ANSYS software has been developed and used in the analysis. The confinement effect provided by the steel tube is considered in the analysis. Comparisons of the analytical model results, along with other available experimental outputs from literature have been done to verify the structural model. The compressive strength and stiffness of SFRC composite columns were discussed, and the interpretation of the FEA model results has indicated that, the use of SFRC as infill material has a considerable effect on the strength and stiffness of the composite column. The analytical model results were compared with the existing design methods of composite columns - (EC4, AISC/LRFD and the Egyptian code of Practice for Steel Construction, ECPSC/LRFD). The comparison indicated that, the results of the FEA model were evaluated to an acceptable limit of accuracy. The code design equations were modified to introduce the steel fiber effect and compared with the results of the FEA model for verification.
This paper aims to analytically study the effect of loading conditions and confinement type on the mechanical properties of the concrete-steel composite columns under axial compressive loading. The axial loading is applied to the composite columns in the two ways; only on the concrete core, and on the concrete core and steel tube simultaneously, which are called steel tube-confined concrete (STCC) and concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, respectively. In addition, the confinement is investigated in the three types of passive, short-term active and long-term active confinement. Nonlinear finite element 3D models for analyzing these columns are developed using the ABAQUS program, and then these models are verified with respect to the recent experimental results reported by the authors on the STCC and CFST columns experiencing active and passive confinements. Axial and lateral stress-strain curves as well as the failure mode for qualitative verification, and compressive strength for quantitative verification are considered. It is found that there is a good consistency between the finite element analysis results and the experimental ones. In addition, a parametric study is performed to evaluate the effect of axial loading type, prestressing ratio, concrete compressive strength and steel tube diameter-to-wall thickness ratio on the compressive behavior of the composite columns. Finally, the compressive strength results of CFST specimens obtained via the finite element analysis are compared with the values specified by the international codes and standards including EC4, CSA, ACI-318, and AISC, with the results showing that ACI-318 and AISC underestimate the compressive strength of the composite columns, while EC4 and CSA codes present overestimated values.
In this paper, an experimental study was conducted on the compressive behavior of steel tube confined concrete (STCC) and concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns with active and passive confinement. To create active confinement in the STCC and CFST specimens, an innovative method was used in this study, in which by applying pressure on the fresh concrete, the steel tube was laterally pretensioned and the concrete core was compressed simultaneously. Of the benefits of this technique are improving the composite column behavior, without the use of additives and without the need for vibration, and achieving high prestressing levels. To achieve lower and higher prestressing levels, short and long term pressures were applied to the specimens, respectively. Nineteen STCC and CFST specimens in three groups of passive, short-term active, and long-term active confinement were subjected to axial compression, and their mechanical properties including the compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and axial strain were evaluated. The results showed that the proposed method of prestressing the STCC columns led to a significant increase in the compressive strength (about 60%), initial modulus of elasticity (about 130%) as well as a significant reduction in the axial strain (about 45%). In the CFST columns, the prestressing led to a considerable increase in the compressive strength, a small effect on the initial and secant modulus of elasticity and an increase in the axial strain (about 55%). Moreover, increased prestressing levels negligibly affected the compressive strength of STCCs and CFSTs but slightly increased the elastic modulus of STCCs and significantly decreased that of CFSTs.

The hollow RC(Reinforced concrete) column has the effect of reducing weight and materials compared to solid RC column. However, the hollow RC column shows a low ductile behavior due to brittle failure of inside concrete. To overcome this problem, the internally confined hollow reinforced concrete column has been developed. In this study, the behavior of internally confined hollow RC columns were evaluated with safety ratio, ductility, total material cost, the total weight of the pier, etc. The hollow ratio is varied from 0.50 to 0.85.

Concrete filled steel tube structures were recently used in constructing high-rise buildings due to their effectiveness. Studies on concrete filled steel tubes have been focused on the experiments of uni-axial compression and bending and eccentric compression. There were also a few studies that investigated CFT member behavior under combined compression and torsion. The behavior of a circular CFT column under combined torsion and compression was theoretically investigated, considering the confinement of steel tubes on the concrete, the softening of the concrete, and the spiral effect, which were the dominant factors that influenced compression and torsion strength. The biaxial stress effects due to diagonal cracking were also taken into account. By applying those factors to compatibility and equilibrium conditions, the basic equation was derived, and the equation could be used to incorporate the torsional behavior of the entire loading history of the CFT member.
When the weight if a concrete member makes problems. or when the cost of the concrete is relatively high, it may be economical to use a hollow concrete member. But a hollow R.C Pier may have poor ductility because of the brittle failure at the inner face of the hollow R.C Pier. This brittle failure results from the absence of the confinement at the inner face of the hollow R.C Pier. To avoid this brittle failure an internally confined hollow R.C Pier was developed. Test results show that the energy ductility ratio of a internally confined hollow R.C Pier have a superior energy ductility ratio to a general hollow R.C Pier.
As the excellent mechanical performance and easy construction of concrete filled steel tubes (CFST) composite structure, it has the potential to be used to strengthen RC pier columns. Therefore, tests were conducted on 2 reinforcement concrete (RC) stub columns and 9 RC columns strengthened with circular CFST under axial loading. The test results show that the circular CFST strengthening method is effective since the mean bearing capacity of the RC columns is increased at least 3.69 times and the ductility index is significantly improved more than 30%. One of the reasons for enhancement is obvious confinement provided by steel tube besides the additional bearing capacity supplied by the strengthening materials. From the analysis of the enhancement ratio, the strengthening structure has at least an extra 20% amplification except for taking full advantage of the strength of the strengthening material. Through the analysis of confining stress provided by steel tube and the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete, it is found that the strength of the core concrete can be increased by 21-33% and the ultimate strain can be enhanced to beyond $15,000{\mu}{\varepsilon}$.
According to former studies, the mechanical properties of reinforced concrete filled tubular steel (RCFT) columns differed greatly from that of concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) columns because of interaction of inserted reinforcement in RCFT. Employing an experiment-based verification policy, a general FE nonlinear analysis model was developed to analyze the mechanical behavior and failure mechanism of RCFT columns under uniaxial compression. The reasonable stress-strain relationships were suggested for confined concrete, reinforcements and steel tube in the model. The mechanism for shear failure of concrete core was found out in the numerical simulation, and a none-conventional method and equation for evaluating the confinement effect of RCFT were proposed.
