Corrosion of steel reinforcement is a major factor in the deterioration of harbour and bridge structure. Steel corrosion in concrete must be checked for assessing the condition of a reinforced concrete structure. There are several ways how to measure the corrosion condition of reinforced concrete, but the corrosion potential measurement is a very simple, rapid, cost-effective and non-destructive technique to evaluate the severity of corrosion in reinforced concrete structure, therefore commonly used by engineers. However some particular situations may not relate to the reinforcement corrosion probability and a simple comparison of the corrosion potential data with the ASTM C876 Standard on steel reinforcement corrosion probability could be meaningless and not give reliable informations because of environment factors as oxygen concentration, chloride content, concrete resistance. Therefore this paper explains the risk of corrosion assessment in reinforced concrete structure and how many factors can affect the reliability of the corrosion potential data.

Recent construction activities and maintenance of marine facilities have been accelerating to keep up with rapid economic growth in Korea. Marine concrete structures are exposed to salts an chloride from ocean environments. The corrosion of reinforcement steel caused by chloride-penetration into concrete may severely effect the durability of concrete structures. The objective of this research is to develop a durable concrete by investigating the corrosion resistance of various corrosion protection systems utilizing different water/cement ratio, silica fumes, corrosion inhibitors and etc. A tow-year verification test on various corrosion protection systems has been doing in the laboratory and at the seaside. Corrosion investigations on reinforcement steel are now under progress for more than 180 concrete specimen. Corrosion-related measurements include macrocell corrosion current, instant-off voltage between corroding and noncorroding reinforcement, chloride contents, the corroded surface areas on the reinforcement steel, and etc. A low level of corrosion is investigated on reinforcement steels in concrete specimen made with corrosion inhibitors or applied aqueous impregnating corrosion inhibitors into their surface, even though high chloride contents of concrete specimen.
In this study, accelerated corrosion tests were conducted on concrete specimens with and without accelerated carbonation beforehand for the purpose of elucidating the effects of carbonation, cover depth, and water-cement ratio (W/C) on the reinforcement corrosion. During testing, the corrosion current between the anode steel and cathode stainless steel was measured to continuously monitor the progress of corrosion throughout the test period, thereby investigating the mechanism of reinforcement corrosion and the relationship between corrosion and crack width, as well as other parameters.
The aim of this study is to investigate the pH threshold value for the corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete. A method was designed to attain the pH value of the pore solution on the location of the steel in concrete. Then the pH values of the pore solution on the location of steel in concrete were changed by exposing the samples to the environment (CO25%, RH 40%) to accelerate carbonation with different periods. Based on this, the pH threshold value for the corrosion of steel reinforcement had been examined by the methods of half-cell potential and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS). The results have indicated that the pH threshold value for the initial corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete was 11.21. However, in the carbonated concrete, agreement among whether steel corrosion was initiatory determined by the detection methods mentioned above could be found.
Zinc coating on carbon steels give the higher corrosion resistance in chloride containing environments and in carbonated concrete. However, hydrogen evolution accompanies the corrosion of zinc in the initial activity in fresh concrete, which can lead to the formation of a porous structure at the reinforcement -concrete interface, which can potentially reduce the bond-strength of the reinforcement with concrete. The present study examines the mechanism of the corrosion of hot-dip galvanized steel in detail, as in the model pore solutions and real concrete. Calcium ion plays an important role in the corrosion mechanism, as it prevents the formation of passive layers on zinc at an elevated alkalinity. The corrosion rate of galvanized steel decreases in accordance with the exposure time; however, the reason for this is not the zinc transition into passivity, but the consumption of the less corrosion-resistant phases of hot-dip galvanizing in the concrete environment. The results on the electrochemical tests have been confirmed by the bond-strength test for the reinforcement of concrete and by evaluating the porosity of the cement adjacent to the reinforcement.
Reinforcement corrosion is the main cause of the durability failure of reinforced concrete (RC) structure. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) numerical model of macro-cell corrosion is established to reveal the corrosion mechanisms of steel reinforcement in RC structure. Modified Direct Iteration Method (MDIM) is employed to solve the system of partial differential equations for reinforcement corrosion. Through the sensitivity analysis of electrochemical parameters, it is found that the average corrosion current density is more sensitive to the change of cathodic Tafel slope and anodic equilibrium potential, compared with the other electrochemical parameters. Furthermore, both the anode-to-cathode (A/C) ratio and the anodic length have significant influences on the average corrosion current density, especially when A/C ratio is less than 0.5 and anodic length is less than 35 mm. More importantly, it is demonstrated that the corrosion rate of semi-circumferential corrosion is much larger than that of circumferential corrosion for the same A/C ratio value. The simulation results can give a unique insight into understanding the detailed electrochemical corrosion processes of steel reinforcement in RC structure for application in service life prediction of RC structures in actual civil engineer.

This study were predicted the corrosion threshold reached at steel reinforcement in latex modified concrete(LMC) which were applied the agricultural hydraulic concrete structures. Accelerated testing was accomplished to the evaluate the diffusion coefficient of LMC mix, and the time dependent constants of diffusion. Also, the average chloride diffusion coefficient was estimated. From the average chloride ion diffusion coefficient, the time which critical chloride contents at depth of reinforcement steel was estimated. Test results indicated that the corrosion threshold reached at reinforcement in LMC were effected on the mix proportion factor including cement contents, latex content, and water-cement ratio. Especially, the average chloride diffusion coefficient, the corrosion threshold reached at reinforcement in LMC were affected by the all mix proportion factor.

There are many structures attacked by chloride ions near a marine environment. And they are attacked by a salt of de-icing chemicals. So, the embedded reinforcement is corroded. In the same time, these are under a fatigue loading by a traffic loading in bridges. In previous studies, there are many researches that deal with a bond behavior under a monotonic loading according to the rate of a steel corrosion. But there are most cases that the steel corrosion and the repeated loading are acted on structures simultaneously. So, in this study, it is investigated a fatigue-bond behavior of RC structures under a steel corrosion and a fatigue loading. Main variables of the test are a corrosion of steel reinforcement and a level of stress.

The structural deterioration of concrete structures due to reinforcement corrosion is a major worldwide problem. Service life of the age-degraded concrete structures is governed by the protective action provided by the cover concrete against the susceptibility of the reinforcement to the corrosive environment. The corrosion of steel would result in the various corrosion products, which depending on the level of the oxidation may have much greater volume than the original iron that gets consumed by the process of corrosion. This volume expansion would be responsible for exerting the expansive radial pressure at the steel-concrete interface resulting in the development of hoop tensile stresses in the surrounding cover concrete. Once the maximum hoop tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete, cracking of cover concrete would take place. The cracking begins at the steel-concrete interface and propagates outwards and eventually resulting in the through cracking of the cover concrete. The cover cracking would indicate the loss of the service life for the corrosion-affected structures. In the present paper, analytical models have been developed considering the residual strength of the cracked concrete and the stiffness provided by the combination of the reinforcement and expansive corrosion products. The problem is modeled as a boundary value problem and the governing equations are expressed in terms of the radial displacement. The analytical solutions are presented considering a simple 2-zone model for the cover concrete viz. cracked or uncracked. A sensitivity analysis has also been carried out to show the influence of the various parameters of the proposed models. The time to cover cracking is found to be function of initial material properties of the cover concrete and reinforcement plus corrosion products combine, type of rust products, rate of corrosion and the residual strength of the cover concrete. The calculated cracking times are correlated against the published experimental and analytical reference data.
