Cr-N films were deposited on low-carbon steel sheets by the reactive arc-induced ion plating (AIIP). The influence of the deposition conditions (nitrogen pressure and substrate bias voltage) on the crystal orientation, morphology and microhardness of the Cr-N films has been investigated using x-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. The impurities and contaminations on the surface and at the interface, and the layer-by-layer compositions of the film have been analyzed using scanning Auger multiprobe (SAM) and glow discharge spectroscope (GDS). The mixed state of Cr and Cr₂N turned out to have a fine fibrous structure. The Cr₂N films were deposited at a wide range of nitrogen flow rates. The orientations of Cr₂N films were mainly (110) and (111), and the intensity of the (111) peak increased as the substrate bias voltage increased. The microstructure of the Cr₂N film was dense and no columnar structure was observed. The films in the mixed state of Cr₂N and CrN were also dense without columnar structure. The maximum microhardness of the Cr-N films was 2400 kg/㎟ at 10 gf load.
Titanium carbide(TiC) films were deposited on stainless-steel sheets using HCD(Hollow Cathode Discharge) reactive ion plating. Acetylene gas was used as the reactant gas. The characteristics of TiC films were examined by X-Ray diffraction, $\alpha$-step, ESCA(Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis), and, AES(Auger Electron Spectroscopy). The results were discussed with regard to various deposition conditions(bias voltage, acetylene flow rate, temperature).

TiN and TiAlN coating layer were deposited on WC-Co steel substrates by an arc ion plating(AIP) technique. The crystallinity and morphology for the deposited coating layers were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The impact behaviors of the deposited TiN and TiAlN coating layer were investigated with a ball-on-plate impact tester. Beyond $10^2$ impact cycle, TiAlN coating layer showed superior impact wear resistance compared to TiN coating layer. On the other hand, both TiN and TiAlN coating layers started to be partially failed between $10^2$ and $10^3$ impact cycle. Above $10^3$ impact cycle, TiN and TiAlN coating layers showed similar impact behavior because of the substrate effect.

Titanium nitride films have been prepared on various substrates (silicon wafer, HSS) by cathode arc ion plating process to measure microhardness, adhesion and wear-resistant behaviors by changing the substrate bias voltages (0∼-300V), thickness and roughness. Microhardnesses were measured by micro vickers hardness tester, the adhesion strengths were evaluated by acoustic signals through the scratch test with incremental applied load. As the substrate bias voltages were increased, the {111} orientation was predominant, the microhardnesses and adhesion strengths of tool steel were observed to be stronger than those of without subatrate bias voltage. Adhesion strengths of the substrate bias were 4-7 times higher than those of without the substrate bias, confirmed by SEM with EDX. Wear resistances were used pin-on-disk tribotester and TiN costing reduced the abrasive wear. As the substrate bias was increased, the weight loss and the friction coefficient was decreased.

The effect of the DMAB concentration, temperature, deposition time, and stabilizer concentration on the precipitation reaction of the electroless nickel plating using dimethylamine borane (DMAB) as reducing agent was investigated to by the weight gain and electrochemical method. The deposition rate was dependent with DMAB concentration. The polarization resistance of the precipitation reaction was reduced with DMAB concentration. The precipitation reaction rate of Ni-B deposits was controlled by the oxidation rate of DMAB as the source of electron. The boron content of the deposit was constant at about 5.5wt%, even when DMAB concentration in the solution was increased. The effect of temperature and stabilizer ($Pb(NO_3)_2$) concentration on deposition rate was shown to have co-dependent behaviors.

Amorphous carbon nitride (a-C:N) multilayerfilms are formed by using altermating conditions during film deposition in are ion plating process. Because hard a-C:N films prepared with suitable megative bias voltages have large compressive stress, it is difficult to increase film thickness more than 200nm. Preparing multilayer films composed of hard layers and soft layers, we can grow thick multilayer films on Si and SKH steel substrate. The total thickness of multilayer films is more than 1$\mu\textrm{m}$. The multilayer films are several times thicker than the single layer films and almost equal in hardness and internal stress to the single layer ones. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and Raman spectroscopy reveal that multilayer films equal to single layer films in structure, which is similar to the structure of DLC films.

A dense palladium-nikel (Pd-Ni) alloy composite membrane has been fabricated on microporous nickel support mixed with submicron/micron nickel powder instead of mesoporous stainless steel support. Plasma treatment process is introduced as pre-treatment process instead of HCI activation. Pd-Ni alloy composite membrane prepared by electro plating was fairly a uniform and dense surface morphology. The membrane was characterized by permeation experiments with hydrogen and nitrogen gases at temperature 773 K and pressure 2.2 psi. The results showed that hydrogen ($H_2$) permeance was 27 ml/$\textrm{cm}^2$ㆍatmㆍmin and hydrogen/ nitrogen ($_H2$$N_2$) selectivity was 8 at 773 K.
The resistance spot welding is one of the most commonly used welding process for joining the sheet metal in automotive manufacturing process due to higher deposition rates and higher economy achieved. Control variables in the resistance spot welding for achieving high quality are welding current, welding force and welding time. Generally at the manufacturing scene, welding current Vs welding time lobe diagram is used to estimate weldability because controlling welding force is not practical due to economical reasons. However new automotive steel plates have been developed to make lightweight automobiles and to improve resistance against rusting. Also the weldability of these steel plates are worst than the existing steel plates because of changing bare metal and surface plating effect. In consequence of above mentioned reasons, it is necessary to use welding force to present the lobe diagram. In this study, we obtained the welding force Vs welding current lobe diagram for commonly used GA steel plate and found that the second order repression model of tensile shear strength was useful in reducing the number of experiments, and the indentation, and thickness change during welding were used as a response to estimate quantitatively expulsion.
The steel has been used in modern industry, car maker and electric appliance. The steel have some problem, specially corrosion problem. To solve corrosion problem, Zn electrodeposit on steel have been adapted. Recently, The modern industry asks to increase corrosion resistance. Naturally, Increasing corrosion resistance increases the thickness of Zn electrodeposit. But increasing thickness of Zn electrodeposit has some problems. In making part, There are some crack. This crack cause to decrease corrosion resistance. To solve this problem, it is interested in Zn Based alloy electrodeposit such as Zn-Cr. Here, the influence of the electrolytic conditions on the composition of the alloy plating in the chloride bath was investigated. The results are explained by the cathode overvoltage curve of Cr and Zn. As the current density of the cathode increases, Zn content of electrodeposit decrease and Cr content of electrodeposit increase. As the temperature of the electrolyte increases, Zn content of electrodeposit decrease and Cr content of electrodeposit increase.

The drawbead is an important part in sheet metal forming for automotive part and its effect is affected by various process parameters. Therefore in this study, drawbead friction test was performed at various process parameters - panels (cold rolled and galvanized sheet steel), lubricants (having three different viscosities), bead materials(steel, iron) and surface treatment of bead (Cr plating). Circular shape bead has been used for the test. The results show that friction and drawing characteristics were mainly influenced by the nature of zinc coating, viscosity of lubricants, surface treatment of a bead and hardness of coated layer.
