  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate economics by the Life Cycle cost(LCC) analysis of Steel Box Girder and Prestressed Box Girder bridge types. The study has been performed as a case study. A questionnaire survey for the repair and replacement cycle has been done in order to predict operation and maintenance costs. For LCC analysis and comparison, the present value technique is used. The results of this study are summarized as follows: (1) A LCC analysis model of Steel Box Girder and Prestressed Box Girder bridge types is suggested through a case study. (2) The repair and replacement cycle of elements of them are investigated using a questionnaire survey. (3) As a result of LCC case study, the type of Prestressed Box Girder bridge is analyzed more economic than Steel Box Girder.

  • Despite the number of steel bridges being under in service more than 50 years reaches about 50$\%$ in present, the quantitative estimation in maintenance on steel railway bridges is not possible because a ton of the field data in the bridges have not been plentifully accumulated. Therefore, a series of field tests on the steel plate girder bridge, the typical types of steel railway bridges, are executed, and the stress characteristics of main members in steel plate girder railway bridges are quantitatively estimated in this study.

  • The end-reinforced composite-beam (eco-girder) system was developed that has characteristics of the existing composite beams such as reduced floor height and increased strength. With it, less use of steel is expected. In the eco-girder system, only both ends of the steel-frame beam, which are vulnerable to the ultimate moment, are reinforced with steel plates so that the steel frame beam design will be based on the moment at the beam center. This study used fiber element analysis, which is a simple representation and numerical integration of the principles of the detailed Finite Element Method(FEM), to predict the hysteretic behavior of reinforced composite beams under cyclic loading. The validity of the numerical method was verified by comparing the results of this study with those of previous studies. In addition, the hysteretic behavior of the eco-girder was compared with that of the existing composite beams.

  • This study examines the influence of curved, steel, I-girder bridge configuration on girder end reactions and cross frame member forces during seismic events. Simply-supported bridge finite element models were created and examined under seismic events mimicking what could be experienced in AASHTO Seismic Zone 2. Bridges were analyzed using practical ranges of: radius of curvature; girder and cross frame spacings; and lateral bracing configuration. Results from the study indicated that: (1) radius of curvature had the greatest influence on seismic response; (2) interior (lowest radius) girder reactions were heavily influenced by parameter variations and, in certain instances, uplift at their bearings could be a concern; (3) vertical excitation more heavily influenced bearing and cross frame seismic response; and (4) lateral bracing helped reduce seismic effects but using bracing along the entire span did not provide additional benefit over placing bracing only in bays adjacent to the supports.

  • Since the diaphragm manhole of steel box girder bridges is designed generally from experience, it has become the primary factor in the excessive cost of steel bridge construction. For the economical and efficient manufacture of diaphragm manholes, it is necessary to study the exact behavior of the diaphragm manhole in a steel box girder bridge. In this study, both an experimental test and a structural analysis are performed to verify the behavior of the diaphragm manhole in a steel box girder bridge. A detailed structural analysis was performed according to various diaphragm manhole shapes, and in conclusion, the suitable reinforcement method for the support of diaphragm manholes in steel box bridges is presented.

  • Structural optimization algorithm of steel box girder bridges using improved higher-order approximate reanalysis technique is proposed in this paper. The proposed approximation method is a generalization of the convex approximation method. The order of the approximate reanalysis for each function is analytically adjusted in the optimization process. This self-adjusted capability makes the approximate structural analysis values conservative enough to maintain the optimum design point of the approximate problem. The efficiency of proposed optimazation algorithm, compared with conventional algorithm, is successfully demonstrated in the steel box girder bridges. The efficiency and robustness of proposed algorithm is also demonstrated in practical steel box girder bridges.

  • In Korea, more than 90% of the total number of steel bridges built for 40~70 m span length is a steel box-girder bridge type. A steel box-girder bridge is suitable for long span or curved bridges with outstanding flexural and torsional rigidity as well as good constructability and safety. However, a steel box-girder bridge is uneconomical, requiring many secondary members and workmanship such as stiffeners and ribs requiring welding attachments to flanges or webs. Therefore, in US and Japan, a plate girder bridge, which is relatively cheap and easy to construct is generally used. One type of the plate girder bridge is the two- or three-main girder plate bridge, which is a composite plate girder bridge that minimizes the number of required main girders by increasing the distance between the adjacent girders. Also, for the simplification of girder section, the stiffener which requires attachment to the web is not required. The two-main steel girder plate bridge is a representative type of plate girder bridges, which is suitable for bridges with 10 m effective width and has been developed in the early 1960s in France. To ensure greater safety of two- or three-main girder plate bridges, a larger steel section is used in the bridge domestically than in Europe or Japan. Also, the total number of two- or three-main girder plate bridge constructed in Korea is significantly less than the steel box girder bridge due to a lack of designers' familiarity with more complex design detailing of the bridge compare to that of a steel box girder bridge design. In this study, a new construction method called Turn Over method is proposed to minimize the steel section size used in a two- or three-main girder plate bridge by applying prestressing force to the member using confining concrete section's weight to reduce construction cost. Also, a full scale 20 m Turn Over girder specimen and a Turn Over girder bridge specimen were tested to evaluate constructability and structural safety of the members constructed using Turn Over process.

  • Lattice girder is a new steel support developed in Europe for the replacement of an existing H-shaped steel set, which is installed after tunnel excavation. Lattice girder has the following several advantages : 1. Lattice girder minimizes the amount of shotcrete shadow which happens to occur behind a steel support. 2. A triangular shape of lattice girder makes shotcrete placed efficiently. 3. Lattice girder provides a good bond strength for shotcrete, which makes the composite structure of lattice girder and shotcrete behave monolithic, and therefore, the rock load can be supported effectively by the lattice girder system, This paper presents the results from a model wall test, a strength test for shotcrete shot on the model wall and a strength test for the bond between lattice girder and shotcrete. These tests proved that lattice-girder system is superior to H-shaped steel-set system concerning the shotcrete rebound rate, the developed shotcrete strength and the adhesion characteristics.

  • In strengthening structure, the external post-tensioning method which secure clearness in the structure analysis process is adopted to bridge as well as architecture structure. Therefore, the major objective of this study is to investigate the effects and application of external post-tensioning method for steel plate girder bridge. It analyzed the mechanical behaviors of steel plate girder bridge with applying external post-tensioning on the finite element analysis and laboratory test for the dynamic characteristics. As a result, the reinforcement of steel plate girder bridge the external post-tensioning method are obviously effective for the response which is non-reinforced. The analytical and experimental study are carried out to investigate the post-tension force decrease stress and deflection on steel plate girder bridge for serviceability. It is investigated that the change degree of natural frequency is very low with applying the external post-tensioning method. The servicing steel plate girder bridge with external post-tensioning is the reasonable reinforcement measures which could be secured the stability of dynamic behavior and increase a dropped durability.
