A modified removable appliance for molar distalization called C-activator was used in a 10-year old male patient with a Class II anterior deep bite malocclusion with upper arch discrepancy. The treatment plan involved correcting the Class ll relationship, distalizing both upper first molars, and regaining space for the erupting canines. The C-activator, which was used for 6 months, consisted of a labial framework formed from .036-in stainless steel wire and an acrylic monobloc. Both the closed helices of the labial framework were compressed for reactivation during the C-activator treatment period. C-activator mechanics simultaneously achieved distalization of the upper first molars into their proper positions and repositioning of the mandible. After 21 months of treatment, the correct oberbite and overjet was obtained and contributed to an Improvement in facial balance. The treatment results were stable 6 months after debonding. Fabrication and placement of the new appliance and clinical procedures are detailed, and the treatment sequence and results of this case are presented as follows.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the static (SFF) and kinetic frictional forces (KFF) in sliding mechanics of hybrid bracket systems that involve placing a conventional bracket (CB) or active self-ligating bracket (ASLB) on the maxillary anterior teeth (MXAT) and a passive SLB (PSLB) on the maxillary posterior teeth (MXPT). Methods: The samples consisted of two thoroughbred types (group 1, anterior-CB + posterior-CB; group 2, anterior-ASLB + posterior-ASLB) and four hybrid types (group 3, anterior-CB + posterior-PSLB-type 1; group 4, anterior-CB + posterior-PSLB-type 2; group 5, anterior-ASLB + posterior-PSLB-type 1; group 6, anterior-ASLB + posterior-PSLB-type 2) (n = 13 per group). After maxillary dentition alignment and maxillary first premolars removal in the stereolithographically-made typodont system, a $0.019{\times}0.025$-inch stainless steel wire was drawn through the right quadrant of the maxillary arch at 0.5 mm/min for 5 min. The SFF and KFF were measured with a mechanical testing machine and statistical analyses were performed. Results: Four different categories of SFF and KFF were observed among all groups (all p < 0.001). Group 1 demonstrated the highest SFF and KFF; groups 4 and 3 were second and third highest, respectively. The fourth category included groups 2, 5, and 6. Placing PSLBs on the MXPT resulted in significant SFF and KFF reductions in cases with CBs on the MXAT, but not in cases with ASLBs on the MXAT. Conclusions: These data might aid in the development of a hybrid bracket system that enables low-friction sliding of an archwire through the MXPT.
The stability of the intersection area of two tunnels is analyzed by observational method. The depth from ground surface to the intersected area is shallow and the geology around the area consists of soil and/or weathered rock. The tunnel is supported by reinforced protective umbrella method with 12 m long 3-layer steel-pipes and the intersected area is additionally reinforced with 6 m long rockbolts. The measured displacements are converged and mechanical stability of the intersected area of two tunnels is confirmed; tunnel arch settles to 6-7 mm at the crown and the sidewalls converges to about 5 mm. So based on the displacement measurements, the supporting system for the tunnel intersection proves to be effective to not only reduce the deformation of tunnels but also maintain the stability of tunnels.

In recent, in case that the underpass is constructed by trenchless method, its stability increases by reinforcing steel pipe with re-bar and mortar after propulsion into the ground to form pipe-roof. Therefore, it can be predicted that the integrated pipe-roof decreases the stress acting on the underpass by sharing load. In this study, to analyze the effect of integrated pipe-roof and behavior of stress around underpass, experimental tests for the rectangular and arch cross section of the underpass are performed using soil chamber. As a result, stress and strain acting on the underpass decrease due to sharing load by integrated pipe-roof. This phenomenon is more pronounced by increasing the stiffness of pipe-roof. Furthermore it can be expected that cross-section of underpass can be economically designed.
PURPOSE. To compare the effect of sodium hypochlorite and microwave disinfection on the dimensional stability of denture bases without and with relining. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A brass die was prepared by simulating an edentulous maxillary arch. It was used to fabricate 1.5 mm and 3 mm of thickness denture bases (n = 40). The 1.5 mm of thickness-specimens (n = 20) were relined with 1.5 mm of autopolymerizing relining resin. Five holes were prepared over crest of ridge of brass die with intimately fitting stainless steel pins which were transferred to the intaglio surface of specimens during fabrication of denture bases. For calculation of dimensional changes in denture bases, differences between the baseline area before and after disinfection of the specimens were used. The denture bases without and with relining were divided into 2 groups (each n =20). Data were analyzed using student paired 't'and unpaired 't'test. RESULTS. Microwave disinfection produces significant shrinkage in both denture bases without relining (t =17.16; P<.001) and with relining (t = 14.9; P<.001). Denture bases without relining showed more shrinkage when compared with relined denture bases after microwave disinfection (t = 6.09; P<.001). The changes in dimensional stability after sodium hypochlorite disinfection were not significant for both denture bases without relining (t = 2.19; P=.056) and denture bases with relining (t = 2.17; P=.058). CONCLUSION. Microwave disinfection leads to increased shrinkage of denture bases without and with relining. Chemical disinfection with sodium hypochlorite seems to be a safer method of disinfection with regards to physical properties such as changes in dimensional stability.
This study build finite element analysis (FEA) models describing the bending events of coiled tubing (CT) at the wellhead and trips into the hole, accurately provide the state of stress and strain while the CT is in service. The bending moment and axial force history curves are used as loads and boundary conditions in the diametrical growth models to ensure consistency with the actual working conditions in field operations. The simulation diametrical growth results in this study are more accurate and reasonable. Analysis the factors influencing fatigue and diametrical growth shows that the internal pressure has a first-order influence on fatigue, followed by the radius of the guide arch, reel and the CT diameter. As the number of trip cycles increase, fatigue damage, residual stress and strain cumulatively increase, until CT failure occurs. Significant residual stresses remain in the CT cross-section, and the CT exhibits a residual curvature, the initial residual bending configuration of CT under wellbore constraints, after running into the hole, is sinusoidal. The residual stresses and residual bending configuration significantly decrease the buckling load, making the buckling and buckling release of CT in the downhole an elastic-plastic process, exacerbating the helical lockup. The conclusions drawn in this study will improve CT models and contribute to the operational and economic success of CT services.

Recently, many ocean bridges that connect land to island or island to island have been constructed along with the improvement of the nation's economy. Long-span bridges can be categorized as suspension bridge, cable-stayed bridge, arch bridge and truss bridge. In this study, correction with respect to construction error can be presented on site through the monitoring of the cable tension change of real structure for four major construction stages so that construction accuracy, including the management of profiles, can be improved. A vibration method, the so-called indirect method that uses the cable's natural frequency changes from the acceleration sensor installed on the cable, is applied in measuring cable tension. In this study, the estimation formula for the effective length of cable with damper is presented by comparing and analyzing between actual measurement and analysis result for the change of the cable's effective length. By the way, it is known that the reliability of estimating cable tension by applying the former method that uses the net distance from damper to anchorage is low. Therefore, for future reference of the maintenance stage, the presented formula for estimating the effective length of cable can be used as a reference for the rational decision-making, such as the re-tensioning and replacement of cable.

The CFTA girder developed is a concrete filled steel tubular system with arched shape and external post-tensioning (PT) tendons which control the initial camber and the bending stress of the girder. In the present study the effects of the PT tendons on the dynamic behavior of the girder subjected to a moving vehicle load are numerically investigated. Various levels for the tendon quantity and the tendon forces are considered, using the existing FE model of the girder. The vehicle considered is a DB-24 truck and is modeled with two tracks-three axles. Equivalent-load pulse time histories are applied to each node to simulate the moving vehicle, depending on the time of arrival and the discretization. The vehicle speeds are varied from 40 km/hr to 100 km/hr with increment of 20 km/hr. The analysis results show that the tendon forces do not produce any influences on the dynamic responses of the girder. However the dymamic deflection of the girder increases when a smaller amount of tendons is used. The Dynamic Amplification Factors (DAF) are evaluated based on the static and dynamic responses. Much lower values of the DAF are obtained, even no tendons applied, than those provided by the design criteria of the AASHTO LRFD and the Korea Highway Standard Specification.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the micro-implant height and anterior hook height to prevent maxillary six anterior teeth from lingual tipping and extruding during space closure. We manufactured maxillary dental arch form, bracket and wire, using the computer aided three-dimensional finite element method. Bracket was $.022'{\times}.028'$ slot size and attached to tooth surface. Wire was $.019'{\times}.025'$ stainless steel and $.032'{\times}.032'$ stainless steel hook was attached to wire between lateral incisor and canine. Length of hook was 8mm and force application points were marked at intervals of In. Four micro-implants were implanted on alveolar bone between second premolar and first molar. The heights of them were 4, 6, 8, 10mm starting from wire. We analyzed initial displacement of teeth by various force application point applying force of 150gm to each micro-implant and anterior hook. The conclusions of 4his study are as the following : 1. When the micro-implant height was 4m and the anterior hook height was 5mm and below, anterior teeth were tipped lingually. When the anterior hook height was 6mm and above, anterior teeth were tipped labially. 2. When the micro-implant height was 6mm and the anterior hook height was 6mm and below, the anterior teeth were tipped lingually. When the anterior hook height was 6m and above, the anterior teeth were tipped labially. But lingual tipping of anterior teeth decreased and labial tipping Increased when the micro-implant height was 6mm, compared with 4mm micro-implant height. 3. When the micro-implant height was 8mm and the anterior hook height was 2mm, the anterior teeth were tipped lingually. When the anterior hook height was 3mm and above, labial tipping movement of the anterior teeth increased proportionally. 4. When the micro-implant height was 10mm and the anterior hook height was 2mm and above, labial tipping of the anterior teeth increased proportionally. 5. As the anterior hook height increased, aterior teeth were tipped more labially. But extrusion occurred on canine and premolar area because of the increase of wire distortion. 6. Movement of the posterior teeth was tipped distally during maxillary six anterior teeth retraction using micro-im plant because of the friction between bracket and were Based on the results of this study, we could predict the pattern of the tooth movement according to position of micro-implant and height of anterior hook. It seems that we can find the force application point for proper tooth movement in consideration of inclination of anterior anterior teeth, periodontal condition, overjet and overbite
This case report describes the treatment of a 23-year, 8-month-old female patient with a Class II malocclusion who showed severe bidentoalveolar protrusion and anterior crowding. The treatment plan consisted of extracting all the first premolars, decrowding and en masse retraction of the upper six anterior teeth and lower anteriors. The upper C-plate placed in the midpalatal area combined with lingual sheath fixtures were used as substitutes for posterior anchorage teeth during upper anterior retraction. Preadjusted brackets (0.022-inch) were used for upper anterior decrowding. A 0.9 mm diameter stainless steel lever-arm soldered to the main arch wire facilitated controlled retraction of upper anteriors. The upper and lower dentition was detailed using a tooth positioner during the finishing stage. Correct overbite and overjet were obtained by decrowding and retraction of the upper six anterior teeth into their proper positions. Use of the C-plate and lingual appliances provided ideal anchorage to enhance the improvement in facial balance. The active treatment period was 19 months. The treatment result was stable 13 months after debonding.
