Clacic amphiboles along the tremolite (Tr)-tschermakite(Ts) joint were synthesized using a piston-cylinder appratus. At 750-85$0^{\circ}C$and 12-2 kb, amphibole+corundum coexist with zoisite($\pm$talc, chlorite, and Mg-staurolite), but with anorthite($\pm$cholorite, spinel, pyroxenes, and sapphirine) at lower P. At 90$0^{\circ}C$, amphibole+corundum+clinopyroxene($\pm$anorthite, forsterite, sapphirine, and garnet) are stable over the P range 12-18 kb. These amphibole-bearing assemblages are replaced at high P by clcinopyroxene+talc+chlorite+zoisite at 650-75$0^{\circ}C$, and at higher temperatures by garnet+clinopyroxene($\pm$zoisite, orthopyroxene, and Mg-staurolite). Synthetic amphiboles with Ts>~45 mol% contain as much as 0.15 excess cations per formula unit(pfu) based on 23 oxygens(anhydrous formula), whereas less tschermakitic ones are deficient in cation occupancy by up to 0.18 pfu. This trend is attributed to the 야/trioctahedral substitution in Ca-amphiboles. Compositions of synthetic amphiboles display systematic changes with P and T governed by coexisting mineral assemblages. The Ts content (=[8-Si-Na]/2) increases with increasing T( Ts/ T=~0.1 nik% K-1) in the range 750-85$0^{\circ}C$, but remains nearly constant at 850-90$0^{\circ}C$. Pressure dramatically affects the Ts content of Ca-amphiboles:it increases with P at 8-12 kb( Ts/ T=2-3 mol% K-1), but significantly decreases at 12-21 kb( Ts/ P=-2.5 mol% Kb-1). Hence, the most tschermakitic amphiboles, containing 60$\pm$5 mol % Ts, or 1.2$\pm$0.1 tetrahedral Al, occur at 12 kb and 850-90$0^{\circ}C$. Compositions of Ca-amphiboles defined by a simple reaction, 3 Tr+2 zoisite+7 corundum+H2O=5 Ts, are reversed and used to estimate thermodynamic parameters of tschermakite assuming ideal mixing of Tr-Ts solid solutions. Predicted standard molal entropy and enthalpy of tschermakite are : S$^{\circ}$of Tr-Ts solid solutions. Predicted standard molal entropy and enthalpy of tschermakite are : S$^{\circ}$=566.9$\pm$13.7 J mol-1K, -1and H$^{\circ}$=-12518.36$\pm$15.17 kJ mol.-1
The influences of mineral content and porosity on ultrasonic wave velocity were assessed for ten hornfelsic rocks collected from southern and western parts of the city of Hamedan, western Iran. Selected rock samples were subjected to mineralogical, physical, and index laboratory tests. The tested rocks contain quartz, feldspar, biotite, muscovite, garnet, sillimanite, kyanite, staurolite, graphite and other fine grained cryptocrystalline matrix materials. The values of dry unit weight of the rocks were high, but the values of porosity and water absorption were low. In the rocks, the values of dry unit weight are related to the presence of dense minerals such as garnet so not affected by porosity. The statistical relationships between mineral content, porosity and ultrasonic wave velocity indicated that the porosity is the most important factor influencing ultrasonic wave velocity of the studied rocks. The values of P-wave velocity of the rocks range from moderate to very high. Empirical equations, relevant to different parameters of the rocks, were proposed to determine the rocks' essential characteristics such as primary and secondary wave velocities. Quality indexes (IQ) of the studied samples were determined based on P-wave velocities of them and their composing minerals and the samples were classified as non-fissured to moderately fissured rocks. Also, all tested samples are classified as slightly fissured rocks according to the ratio of S-wave to P-wave velocities.
The studied area is situated in tho southern part of the Ogcheon fold belt, where the "Ogcheon Group" is widespread with Jurassic and Cretaceous intrusions. The regional stratigraphy may be divided into three formations, the lower pebble bearing phyllitic, the middle dark grey phyllitic, and the upper black phyllitic formations. For the purposes of the present study, the area has been partitioned to three structural subareas based on major fold axes and fault line. The main subjects of the research have been discussed from two different points, multiple deformation and minor-micro fold styles. The former is analyzed by pebble elongation, folding and lineation in a pebbly formation as well as schistosity, crenulation cleavage and crenulated lineation in the phyllitic formation. The later describes the characteristic features of fold style in each formation and structural subarea. Although minor fold axes within broad pelitic rocks usually tend to trend northeast and to plunge northward, most of these were probably formed by two stages, first a similar fold phase and second a kink fold phase. Measured structural elements indicate that crenulation cleavage in phyllite formed parallel to fold axes of folded pebble followed a NE phase of first deformation and a fold axes of pebbles diagonal to bedding of phyllite are represented by a NW phase of a second deformation. Microscopically, quartz and mica grains form a micro fold enabling one to establish tectonic levels which occur in different deformation modes in each stratigraphic sequence. Microtextures such as crenulation cleavage, kink band, aggregate band of mica and pressure shadows of porphyroblast of quartz related to qarnet and staurolite may suggest the time relation of crystallization and tectonism. The result of this study may conform that three deformation phase, NE first phase-NE second phase-NW phase, occurred in the area.
Pelitic rocks of southwestern Nova Scotia have been affected by widespread contact metamorphism due to the intrusion of the Shellburne Pluton, with aureole up to 15 km wide. Well-preserved pseudomorphic textures indicate that common staurolite and andalusite metacrysts formed at the expense only of plagioclase, muscovite and biotite. Excess components (K, Na and Ca) from such replacement reactions imply extensive metasomatism throughout the contact aureole. Modal analysis of a typical andalusite-bearing rock indicates a one-to-one volume ratio of product to reactant. However the products of the replacement reactions contain approximately three times more aluminum than the reactants, indicating that the regional metasomatism also involved aluminum.
Major element zoning has been analyzed in garnet porphroblasts obtained from the Grt-St and Ky-Grt-St grade assemblages in Zones I on the northern flank of the Pelham Dome, north central Massachusetts. These porphyroblasts grew during multiple phases of deformation and meta-morphism revealed by the inclusion trail geometry plus the chemical zoning patterns within garnet porphyroblasts. Unusual zoning patterns, including zoning reversals and gradient changes in XMn, zlgzag patterns in Fe/(Fe +Mg) and staircase-shaped patterns in XCa, are coincident with textural truncations and other changes in microstructure within the garnet porphrublasts. Chemical variations in plagioclase, biotite, muscovite and staurolite combined with inclusion trail geometry and petrography reveal that the garnet zoning patterns are modified by combinations of the following. (1) Uni-and divariant reactions involving garnet consumption(Grt+ Chl+Ms=St+Bt+Qtz + $H_2$O) and production(St+Ms + Qtz= Bt+ Grt +A1$_2$$SiO_{5}$ + $H_2$O). (2) Deformation induced episudic ionit dissolution, preferential diffusion and re-distribution during foliation development. (3) P-T changes during growth of the porphyroblasts. The P-T paths combined with petrographic and inclusion trail morphology observations consist of two pattens; (1) heating/compression during NW-SE shortening; and (2) decompression with cooling during NNW-SSE shortening. Based on temperature-time(T-t) geochronological data and late-Paleozoic tectonic model, Alleghanian metamorphism, which is the result of heterogeneous shearing concentrated along the boundary between the Abalone Terrane(Pelham dome) and cover rocks(Bronson Hill Terrane), has produced Ky-St-Ms mineral assemblage during Pennsylvanian(290-300 Ma) in Shutesbury area. However, temperature of alleghanian metamorphism was not high enough to form garnet and staurolite in the Northfiled syncline area. Alleghanian metamorphism has affected only the matrix due to heterogeneous shearing in the study area.
The Permo-Triassic Songrim orogeny in the Korean peninsula was a major tectonic event involving complicated continental collisions at the eastern margin of Eurasia. Based on the previous studies on the metamorphic and deformations features of the Songrim orogeny, this paper presents metamorphic and structural characteristics and timing of the Songrim orogeny in the Taebaeksan basin, and discuss about correlation of the tectono-metamorphic evolution of the Taebaeksan basin with the Okcheon basin and the Imjingang belt with a combined analysis of bulk crustal shortening direction, metamorphic P-T and T-t (time) paths. The metapelites in the Pyeongan Supergroup in the northeastern margin of the Taebaeksan basin have experienced lower-temperature/medium-pressure (LT/MP) regional metamorphism followed by high-temperature contact metamorphism due to the Jurassic granite intrusion. The earlier LT/MP regional metamorphism produced two loops of clockwise P-T-d (deformation) paths combined with four deformation events ($D_1-D_4$). The first loop concomitant with $D_1$ and $D_2$ occurred at $400-500^{\circ}C$, 1.5-3.0 kbar, and related with growth of syn-$D_1$ chloritoid and andalusite, post-$D_1$ margarite, Ca-rich syn-$D_2$ or post-$D_2$ plagioclase. The second loop accompanying $D_3$ and $D_4$ occurred at $520-580^{\circ}C$, 2.0-6.0 kbar, and associated with the growth of syn-$D_3$ garnet and staurolite, and syn-$D_4$ and/or post-$D_4$ andalusite porphyroblasts. Furthermore the syn-$D_1$ chloritoid and andalusite porphyroblasts grew during E-W bulk crustal shortening, whereas the syn-$D_3$ garnet and staurolite, and the syn-$D_4$ and/or post-$D_4$ andalusite porphyroblasts have grown under N-S bulk crustal shortening. The similarity in the characteristics and timing of the metamorphism and bulk crustal shortening directions between the Okcheon and Imjingang belts suggest that the peak metamorphic conditions tend to increase toward the western part (Imjingang belt and southwestern part of the Gyeonggi Massif) from the eastern part (Taebaeksan basin). The E-W bulk crustal shortening influenced the eastern part of the Okcheon belt, whereas the N-S bulk crustal shortening resulted in strong deformation in the Imjingang and Okcheon belts. Consequently, the Permo-Triassic Songrim orogeny in the Korean peninsula is probably not only related to collision of the North and South China blocks, but also to the amalgamation of terrane fragments at the eastern Eurasia margin (e.g., collision of the Sino-Korean continent and the Hida-Oki terrane).
The northeastern part of the Gyeongsang Basin is widely covered by the Cretaceous Hayang Group (Aptian to Albian). The Hayang Group consists of the IIjig. Hupyeongdong, Jeomgog, and Sagog formations. Heavy mineral analysis was carried out to define the possible source rocks of the Haynag Group snadstones. Heavy minerals separated from IIjig, Hupyeongdong, and Jeomgog sandstones are hematite, ilmenite, leucoxene, magnetite, pyrite, actinolite, andalusite, apatite, biotite, chlorite, epidote, garnet, hornblende, kyanite, monazite, muscovite, rutile, sphene, spinel, staurolite, tourmaline, and zircon. Based on their close association and sensitiveness, the heavy mineral assemblages can be classified into 6 syutes: 1)apatite-green tourmaline-sphene-colorless/yellowish zircon; 2) colorless garnet-epidote-rutile-brown tourmaline; 3) rounded purple zircon-rounded tourmaline-rounded rutile; 4) augite-hornblende-color- less zircon; 5) epidote-garnet-sphene; and 6) blue tourmaline. The possible source rocks corresponding to each assemblage are 1) granitic rocks; 2) metamorphic rocks (schist and gneiss) ; 3) older sedimentary rocks; 4) andesitic rocks; 5) metamorphosed impure limestone; and 6) pegmatite, respectively. Previous paleocurrent data suggest that the sediments of the study area were mainly derived from the northeastern to southeastern directions. Thus, the most possible source areas would be the east extension part of the sobaegsan metamorphic complex to the northeast and the Cheongsong Ridge to the southeast.
The microstructures and time-relationship between deformation and growth of metamorphic minerals(metamorphism) of the Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks(Joseon Supergroup and Pyeongan Group) in the Janggunbong area at the central-south part in the North Sobaegsan Massif, Korea, have been analyzed in this paper. The first phase metamorphism (low-pressure type metamorphism), recognized as the crystallization of stack-type chloritoid and biotite and augen-type old andalusite, occurred under non-deformational condition before D1 deformation related to the formation of an E-W trending isocline-synclinal fold(Janggunbong fold) and associated its axial plane S1 foliation, and produced regional mineralogical zoning of E-W trend in the Paleozoic rocks. The second phase metamorphism(medium-pressure type metamorphism), related to the growth of staurolite and garnet porphyroblasts with straight or curved internal foliations(Si), occurred under non-deformational condition after D1 deformation related to the formation of E-W trending thrusts modifying the Janggunbong fold and during D2 deformation related to the formation of E-W trending Yecheon shear zone. This metamorphism also produced regional mineralogical zoning of E-W trend. After D2 deformation occurred the intrusion of Jurassic Chunyang granite and associated its contact metamorphism which crystallized patchy-type young andalusite and prismatic- or fibrous-type sillimanite and coarse-grained garnet. This metamorphism occurred under non-deformational condition before D3 deformation related to the formation of S3 crenulation cleavage and during early phase of D3 deformation, and formed narrow mineralogical zoning of N-S trend near Chunyang granite.
A total of 139 surface sediment samples, collected from the continental shelf and slope off the southeastern coast of Korea, were analyzed in order to understand their grain-size, mineral composition and organic carbon content. Based on the grain-size characteristics, five surface sedimentary facies were distinguished: sand, clay, mud, sand-mud mixed, and sand-clay mixed facies. The sand facies appears to be composed mostly of relict sand. For mud, most of which seem to be of recent origin, two different sources were suggested, based principally on their areal distribution pattern and the local hydrographic conditions. Heavy mineral composition of the fine-sand size fraction allowed us to distinguish different sand populations from the study area. On the whole, the Hupo Bank sediments showed a high content of garnet, while the sediments from the northern part of the continental shelf were characterized by a relatively high content of metamorphic minerals (kyanite, sillimanite, andalusite, staurolite). Among clay minerals, the most abundant was illite, with chlorite, kaolinite and smectite following in decreasing order. Organic carbon contents in the sediments of the study area were generally high and showed an average value of 1.94%. The sediment grain-size exerted a strong influence on the organic carbon content. The highest organic carbon content, on the other hand, was found in the continental slope sediments.
Pyeongan Supergroup (PS) in the Taebaeksan basin preserves key geological evidences to understand the tectonometamorphic evolution of the Songrim orogeny that affected the formation of the Korean Peninsula during the late Paleozoic to early Mesozoic. The aims of this paper therefore are to investigate the characteristics of the Songrim orogeny based on the previous results of metamorphism and deformations of the PS, and then to review geological significance and research necessity of the PS. Age distributions and Th/U ratio of detrital zircon in the PS indicate that sedimentary environment of the Taebaeksan basin during the late Paleozoic was arc-related foreland basin and retro-arc foreland basin at the active continental margin. In addition, the main magmatic activities occurred in the early Pennsylvanian and Middle Permian, thus sedimentation and magmatic activities occurred simultaneously. The PS was affected by lower temperature-medium pressure (M1) and medium temperature and pressure (M2) regional metamorphism during the Songrim orogeny. During M1, slate and phyllite containing chloritoid, andalusite, kyanite porphyroblasts intensively deformed by E-W bulk crustal shortening combined with folding and shearing. And garnet and staurolite porphyroblasts were formed during the N-S bulk crustal shortening accompained by M2. Such regional metamorphism of the PS is interpreted to occur in an area where high strain zone is localized during ca. 220-270 Ma. In order to elucidate the evolution of the Taebaeksan basin and tectonic features of the Songrim orogeny, it is expected that the study will be carried out such as the regional distribution of metamorphic zones developed in the PS, characteristics and timing of deformations, and late Paleozoic paleo-geography of the Taebaeksan basin.
