  • High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) synchronous generators can be designed with either an air-core type or iron-core type. The air-core type has higher efficiency under rated rotating speed and load than the iron-core type because of the iron losses which may produce much heat. However, the total length of HTS wire in the air-core type is longer than the iron-core type because the generated magnetic flux density of the air-core type is low. This paper deals with designs of 10 MW air-core and iron-core HTS wind power generators for wind turbines. Fully air-core, partially iron-core, and fully iron-core HTS generators are designed, and various stator winding methods in the three HTS generators are also considered, such as short-pitch concentrated winding, full-pitch concentrated winding, short-pitch distributed winding, and full-pitch distributed winding. These HTS generators are analyzed using a 3D finite elements method program. The analysis results of the HTS generators are discussed in detail, and the results will be effectively utilized for large-scale wind power generation systems.

  • Recently researchers are conducting a lot of research related to EEDI in order to satisfy IMO resolution MEPC. Especially they are interested in design of energy saving device. This paper is to design the asymmetric pre-swirl stator for 160K LNG carrier in order to reduce energy. Two types of the asymmetric pre-swirl stator are taken into account; constant and variable pitch angle stators. “constant” and “variable” mean state that the pitch of stators change by radius. The dimensions of the stators are initially determined using potential-flow code. The propulsion performances of the stators are predicted using viscous-flow code. The model test is carried out in towing tank in PNU. Prediction of ship performance generally follow ITTC recommended. Ship wake prediction was done by two method, ITTC 1978 and ITTC 1999. Therefore propulsion performances were compared ITTC 1978 with ITTC 1999 methods. Comparison components are delivered power and thrust deduction coefficient of the model. Final pre-swirl stator is selected by comparing experiment and CFD.

  • Core loss form a larger proportion of the total losses. This paper deals with the analysis on the core loss in PM generator considering the operating speed for wind power application. Using the data information from a manufacturer and nonlinear curve fitting, this paper investigates the magnetic behavior and its core losses in the stator core using the electrical steels.

  • This paper deals with the core loss calculation of a BLDC motor made of Soft Magnetic Composite material. Since the teeth of motor partially have overhang in axial direction, 3 - dimensional equivalent magnetic circuit network (3D-EMCN) is used as an analytical method to get flux density of each element. The total core loss is calculated with the magnetic flux density and core loss curves of the SMC material. The calculated result is compared with core loss of the motor without overhang in stator teeth.

  • Two axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines using soft magnetic composite (SMC) and lamination steel are studied. Generally stator cores of AFPM machines are manufactured using SMC because AFPM machines need 3 dimensional core structures. However, SMC cores have very disadvantages in magnetic properties. Especially permeability value is much lower than that of lamination steel, so magnetic field density is also lower. In terms of core losses, SMC cores have much larger loss values than lamination steel cores because SMC core can't be laminated. In this study, AFPM machine was designed using laminated steel, and iron losses in two machines using SMC and laminated steel were studied. Simulations were carried out by a commercial 3-D FEM tool.

  • The motor applied to electric water pump used in automobiles is the canned type motor structure. The rotor, which is the driving component of the motor, is located in the bulkhead structure of the plastic injection molding, and rotates while immersed in the antifreeze. Plastic Injection Stator is placed on the outside of the bulkhead structure so that the rotor can rotate. The configuration of the rotor consists of magnet, core and shaft. In the case of magnet and core, it is very important to keep the parts sealed because it is a material that is corroded by moisture. When mounted on a vehicle, it must be capable of driving at $120^{\circ}C$ ambient conditions and should not leak under pressure of 1 bar or more. In this paper, we designed and implemented a Leak inspection automation system using helium to check the defects of the electric water pump developed satisfying this condition.

  • This paper is presented for the development of the brushless DC(BLDC) motor for the spindle motor of hard disk drives(HDD). A new BLDC Motor has the use of insulated, compacted, and iron powder for the armature core material of BLDC motors. Insulated iron powder in this paper is generally called soft magnet composite(SMC). The SMC is used for the stator of the motor instead of the laminated steel core. The motor used by SMC can have the good advantages in condition of the high frequency input power and small sized motor. It gets much more high efficiency than laminated steel core at same input power. The proposed motor has a technique of speed sensorless control. Experimental results show the performance of the proposed BLDC motors for an HDD.

  • The work described in this paper is to investigate the additional iron losses and consequent temperatures in core ends of a turbo-generator wound with high voltage cables. Electromagnetic calculations are made with 3D FE models, which include the lamination material with anisotropic properties both in magnetic permeability and electric conductivity. The models also include the geometry of the stator teeth and eventually the axial steps designated to reduce the core end losses. The 3D model of the rotor consists of field windings with straight in-slot parts and end windings. The thermal models are simplified into two dimensions and include the heat sources dumped from the 3D electromagnetic solutions. The influences of power factor on additional iron losses are studied for this cable wound machine and conventional machines. The calculation results show that the additional iron losses can be reduced to about $15\%$ by introducing some small steps around the airgap corner of core ends.
