  • The purpose of this study is to establish a method of estimating the daily urban water demend using Backpropagation algorithm is part of ANN(Artificial Neural Network). This method will be used for the development of the efficient management and operations of the water supply facilities. The data used were the daily urban water demend, the population and weather conditions such as treperarture, precipitation, relative humidity, etc. Kwangju city was selected for the case study area. We adjusted the weights of ANN that are iterated the training data patterns. We normalized the non-stationary time series data [-1,+1] to fast converge, and choose the input patterns by statistical methods. We separated the training and checking patterns form input date patterns. The performance of ANN is compared with multiple-regression method. We discussed the representation ability the model building process and the applicability of ANN approach for the daily water demand. ANN provided the reasonable results for time series forecasting.

  • Food consumption patterns are predictors of nutritional status at all age levels and vary among and between different age groups. This study was designed to asses food habits and fast food eating patterns of college students in Ulsan area through questionnaries. Data from 330 useable forms was analyzed for percent differences, frequency of consumption, and statistical significance of differences between male and female students (T-test and chi square methods were utilized). Food habit score of female students was significantly higher than of male students. The reason for using fast food chain was 'convenience' or 'good taste'. The most preferred food by subjects was noodle or dumpling and least preferred food was pizza. In general, they had a higher satisfaction scores in taste and service of fast food and lower scores in amount and price of it. From this results it appears there is a need for developing domestic brand fast food to lower the price of fast food and giving the nutrition education for proper food selections and eating patterns.

  • Motion estimation plays an important role for video coding. In this paper, we derive optimal search patterns for fast block matching motion estimation. By analyzing the block matching algorithm as a function of block shape and size, we can find an optimal search pattern for initial motion estimation. The proposed idea, which has been verified experimentally by computer simulations, can provide an analytical basis for the current MPEG-2 proposals. In order to choose a more compact search pattern for BMA, we exploit the statistical relationship between the motion and the frame difference of each block.

  • This study compared the consumption expenditure patterns and the effects of socio-demographic variables of elderly and nonelderly households in urban areas of Korea. The data were obtained from the 1994 Family Income and Expenditure Survey conducted by the National Statistical Office. The results showed the differences between elderly and nonelderly households in the expenditure levels of each consumption category, the shares of each consumption category of total expenditures, and the effects of socio-demographic variables on expenditures.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide the basic information about the elderly women's lower body type and anthropometric data by direct and indirect measurements, and to provide well fitting skirt patterns of each body types. Direct and indirect measurements were taken from 202 women, whose ages were between 60 and 79. Using statistical analysis, the lower body shapes of elderly women were classified into four following categories - \circled1 thin type, \circled2 typical type, \circled3 corpulence type and \circled4 corpulence but forward inclining type. Methods of modifying basic skirt patterns for each body types were suggested.

  • This paper compares of lasso type estimators in various high-dimensional data situations with sparse parameters. Lasso, adaptive lasso, fused lasso and elastic net as lasso type estimators and ridge estimator are compared via simulation in linear models with correlated and uncorrelated covariates and binary regression models with correlated covariates and discrete covariates. Each method is shown to have advantages with different penalty conditions according to sparsity patterns of regression parameters. We applied the lasso type methods to Arabidopsis microarray gene expression data to find the strongly significant genes to distinguish two groups.

  • The traffic patterns of today's IP networks exhibit two important properties: self-similarity and long-range dependence. The fractional Brownian motion is widely used for representing the traffic model with the properties. We consider a single server fluid queueing system with input process of a fractional Brownian motion type. Formulas for effective bandwidth are derived in a single source and multiple source cases.

  • Data Mining is used to discover patterns and relationships in huge amounts of data. Researchers in many different fields have shown great interest in data mining analysis. Using the classification technique of data mining analysis, the available model for Receiver Operating Characteristic(ROC) method is presented. We present that this may help analyze result of data mining techniques.

  • A new graphical method, named transformed quantize-quantile (TQQ), of a quantize-quantile (Q-Q) Plot is developed for the detection of deviations from the normal distribution. It will be shown that TQQ is helpful for detecting patterns of how points depart from normality. TQQ characteristics of the various kinds of representations are illustrated by a generated sample from a composite of a normal distribution and a clinical example for TQQ is constructed and explained.

  • The value of statistics used for variable selection criteria can be reduced remarkably by excluding only a few influential cases. Furthermore, different subsets of regressors change leverage and influence patterns for the same response variable. Based on these motivations, this paper suggests a procedure which considers variable selection and detection of influential cases simultaneously.
