Torque of a rotating shaft has been mostly measured by strain gages combined with either a slip ring or telemetry. However, these methods have severe inherent problems like low S/N ratio, high cost, limited number of channels and difficult installation. In this paper, a new method using FBG(fiber bragg grating) sensors and a rotary optical coupler for online non-contact torque monitoring is suggested. FBG sensor can measure both strain and temperature, and has much batter characteristics than those of a strain gage. A rotary optical coupler is a optical connecting device between a rotating shaft and stationary side without any physical contact. It has been devised for transmitting light between a rotating optical fiber and a stationary optical fiber. The proposed method uses this rotary optical coupler to connect FBG sensors on the rotating shaft to instruments at stationary side. And a reference FBG sensor is also applied to compensate the insertion loss change of the rotary optical coupler due to rotation. Three FBG sensors have been fabricated in a single optical fiber. Two FBG sensors are attached on the shaft surface to measure torque and one sensor is installed at the shaft center to compensate the insertion loss change. The torque of a rotating shaft has been successfully measured by the suggested method proving its superior performance potential.
Rubbing occurs when a rotating element comes in contact with a stationary element. In the steam turbines, the rotating element is the rotor while the stationary elements are usually the oil deflectors and packing seals. Rubbing phenomenon may be often obseued on a new or rebuilt machine rather than on a machine that has been operating for several months or years. Rubbing in the turbine has been classified into two modes by the operating conditions: 1) start up or shut down, 2) steady state. At start up or shut down operation, rubbing produces synchronous whirl vibration, which are caused by thermal bow of the shaft due to localized heating on the shaft surface. While subsynchronous whirl vibration is caused by partial rubbing during the steady state operation. In this paper, the two case studies of troubleshooting for excessive vibration caused by rubbing in the actual steam turbines are investigated.
Bi-spectrum is a tool in the signal processing for identification of non-linear dynamic behvaiour in systems, and well-known for stationary system where components are non-linearly interacting. Breathing of a crack during shaft rotation is also exhibits a non-linear behaviour. The crack is known to generate 2X (twice the machine RPM) and higher harmonics in addition to 1X component in the shaft response during its rotation. Misaligned shaft also shows similar such feature as a crack in a shaft. The bi-spectrum method has now been applied on a small rotating rig to observe its features. The bi-spectrum results are found to be encouraging to distinguish these faults based on few experiments conducted on a small rig. The results are presented here.
This study investigates the stress at gear by modelling differential gear and using FEM. When gear is driven under power, high equivalent stress of 1596.2MPa is occurred at the stationary shaft. Maximum equivalent stress of 1596.2MPa is also occurred at the bottom and root of tooth and its fatigue life becomes 12.4 as the shortest cycle. As much as it becomes away from the center of gear, the maximum deformation becomes occurred. As exact power is delivered with the precise design of gear, the loss of power energy can be decreased.
There have been many studies to visualize the vibration and noise of rotary compressor. Most of these studies assumed that the signal is stationary and the time-averaged signal is used for visualization. However, the noise and vibration signals generated during one cycle of crank shaft vary continuously. In this paper, the noise and vibration of rotary compressor which vary continuously are visualized by short time fourier transform method. (omitted)
This paper describes a capacitively reading apparatus for determining the angular orientation, speed and/or direction of rotary objects such as shaft, dial hand, counter wheel and the like. The apparatus consists of sensing device and circuit accompanying with said sensing device. The sensing device is provided by arranging many stationary electrodes lying substantially on a surface of a stationary plane member and by arranging rotary electrode lying substantially on a surface of rotary objects to be monitored, in which said rotary electrode is in confronting relationship to some stationary electrodes so as to construct unique capacitors according to the angular position of rotary objects. The angular position of said rotary electrode is determined by sets of stationary electrodes which are in confronting relationship to rotary electrode. A carrier signal is generated by scanning device while scanning said stationarelectrodes, whose periods are in corresponding relationship to said stationary electrodes, respectively. The periods of carrier corresponding to the angular position of said rotary electrode is modulated by a modulation signal generated by detecting device according to said rotary electrode. This apparatus is applied to automatically monitor any kind of storage tank, as well as to automatically read the conventional utility meters such as Watthour meters, Gas meters, Water meters, etc..

A rotor run-up or run-down process provide more useful information for modal analysis than normal operation conditions. A traditional difficulty associated with rotor run-up or run-down analysis is the non-stationary nature of vibration data. This paper compares Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) and the wavelets analysis in these non-stationary signal analyses. An Adaptive Wavelet Analysis (AWT) is proposed to analyze these signals. Although simulations and experiments in a simple rotor-bearing system show that both STFT and AWT can be used to analyze non-stationary vibration signals in rotor dynamics, proposed AWT provides better results than STFT analysis. From the amplitude-frequency curve obtained by AWT, the modal frequency and damping ratio are calculated. This paper also analyzes the characteristics of signals when the shaft touches the outer hoop in a run-up process. The AWT can give a good result in this complex dynamic analysis of the touching process.
Equations of motion are derived and solved using the finite element method substructure synthesis for the disk-spindle system with rigid spindle and flexible shaft. The disk is modeled as a flexible spinning disk by Kirchhoff plate theory and von Karman nonlinear strain. The spindle supporting the flexible disk is modeled as a rigid body to consider its complex geometry. The stationary shaft supporting the rotating disk-spindle-bearing system is modeled by Euler beam, and the ball bearings are modeled as the stiffness matrix with 5 degrees of freedom. Developed theory is applied to analyze the vibration characteristics of a 3.5" HDD and a 2.5" HDD, respectively, and modal tests are performed to verify the simulation results. This paper shows that the developed theory can be effectively applied to the rotating disk-spindle system with the spindle of complex shape.
This paper presents the characteristics of internal clearances for the interstage of blades and shaft gland seals on the steam turbine which are installed in tandem compound. Internal clearances was changed when the rotor turned in the cylindrical sleeve bearing due to the generation of oil film wedge. This presented concern is very useful to prevent the rubbing damage of seal edge between the fixed and moving parts in steam turbine due to the misalignment at the rotating and stationary parts. This method is applied for the unbalanced clearances distribution to the left and right sides in the turbine casing. A considerable amount of unbalanced clearances distribution trend is determined according to the rotating speed of rotor, size and type of proceeding bearing, oil viscosity, surface roughness of bearing and shaft, oil temperature, oil pressure and bearing load.
The location of source and the transfer path of vibration and noise at arbitrary frequencies, which can not be visualized by averaged signal, can be visualized clearly.
