The quasi-static component of the moving vehicle-induced dynamic response is promising in damage detection as it is sensitive to bridge damage but insensitive to environmental changes. However, accurate extraction of quasi-static component from the dynamic response is challenging especially when the vehicle velocity is high. This paper proposes an adaptive quasi-static component extraction method based on the modified variational mode decomposition (VMD) algorithm. Firstly the analytical solutions of the frequency components caused by road surface roughness, high-frequency dynamic components controlled by bridge natural frequency and quasi-static components in the vehicle-induced bridge response are derived. Then a modified VMD algorithm based on particle swarm algorithm (PSO) and mutual information entropy (MIE) criterion is proposed to adaptively extract the quasi-static components from the vehicle-induced bridge dynamic response. Numerical simulations and real bridge tests are conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed extraction method. The results indicate that the improved VMD algorithm could extract the quasi-static component of the vehicle-induced bridge dynamic response with high accuracy in the presence of the road surface roughness and measurement noise.

Numerical analysis of slope stability is presented using slice method, static seismic analysis methods, and earthquake response analysis methods. Static seismic force is considered as 0.2g while vertical static seismic force is not considered in analysis. For earthquake response analysis, Hachinohe-wave is applied. Safety factor calculated using slice method for failure surface. Calculating methods are Bishop's method and Janhu's method. Static seismic analysis was applied using Mhor-Coulomb model and earthquake response analysis was applied using non-linear elastic model.

Nonlinear Response Optimization using Equivalent Static Loads (NROESL) method/algorithm is proposed to perform optimization of non-linear response structures. The conventional method spends most of the total design time on nonlinear analysis. The NROESL algorithm makes the equivalent static load cases for each response and repeatedly performs linear response optimization and uses them as multiple loading conditions. The equivalent static loads are defined as the loads in the linear analysis, which generates the same response field as those in non-linear analysis. The algorithm is validated for the convergence and the optimality. The proposed algorithm is applied to a simple mathematical problem to verify the convergence and the optimality.

Nonlinear response structural optimization using equivalent static loads (NROESL) has been proposed. Nonlinear response optimization is solved by sequential linear response optimization with equivalent static loads which are generated from the nonlinear responses and linear stiffness matrix. The linear stiffness matrix should be obtained in NROESL, and this process can be fairly difficult for some applications. Proportional transformation of loads (PTL) is proposed to overcome the difficulties. Equivalent static loads are obtained by PTL. It is the same as NROESL except for the process of calculating equivalent static loads. PTL is developed for large-scale probems. First, linear and nonlinear responses are evaluated from linear and nonlinear analyses, respectively. At a DOF of the finite element method, the ratio of the two responses is calculated and an equivalent static load is made by multiplying the ratio and the loads for linear analysis. Therefore, the mumber of the equivalent static loads is as many as that of DOF's and an equivalent static load is used with the reponse for the corresponding DOF in the optimization process. All the equivalent static loads are used as multiple loading conditions during linear response optimization. The process iterates until it converges. Examples are solved by using the proposed method and the results are compared with conventional methods.

In this study, shape optimization of micro-static mixer with a cantilever beam was accomplished for mixing the mixing efficiency by using successive response surface approximations. Variables were chosen as the length of cantilever beam and the angle between horizontal and the cantilever beam. Sequential approximate optimization method was used to deal with both highly nonlinear and non-smooth characteristics of flow field in a micro-static mixer. Shape optimization problem of a micro-static mixer can be divided into a series of simple subproblems. Approximation to solve the subproblems was performed by response surface approximation, which does not require the sensitivity analysis. To verify the reliability of approximated objective function and the accuracy of it, ANOVA analysis and variables selection method were implemented, respectively. It was verified that successive response surface approximation worked very well and the mixing efficiency was improved very much comparing with the initial shape of a micro-static mixer.
Many experimental and analytical studies have been conducted with beam-column subassemblages composed of a two-span beam to investigate the progressive collapse resistance of RC frames. Most study results reveal a strength-decreased transition phase in the nonlinear static load-deflection curve, which may induce dynamic snap-through response and increase the chord rotation demand for effective catenary action (ECA). In this study, the nonlinear static response is idealized as a piecewise linear curve and analytical pseudo-static response is derived for each linearized region to investigate the rotation demands for the ECA of the two-span RC beams. With analytical parameters determined from several published test results, numerical analysis results indicate that the rotation demand of 0.20 rad recommended in the design guidelines does not always guarantee the ECA. A higher rotation demand may be induced for the two-span beams designed with smaller span-to-depth ratios and it is better to use their peak arch resistance (PAR) as the collapse strength. A tensile reinforcement ratio not greater than 1.0% and a span-to-depth ratio not less than 7.0 are suggested for the two-span RC beams bridging the removed column if the ECA is expected for the collapse resistance. Also, complementary pseudo-static analysis is advised to verify the ECA under realistic dynamic column loss even though the static PAR is recovered in the nonlinear static response. A practical empirical formula is provided to estimate an approximate rotation demand for the ECA.
This study presents a dynamic response analysis of operational and parked wind turbines in order to gain better understanding of the roles of wind loads on turbine blades and tower in the generation of turbine response. The results show that the wind load on the tower has a negligible effect on the blade responses of both operational and parked turbines. Its effect on the tower response is also negligible for operational turbine, but is significant for parked turbine. The tower extreme responses due to the wind loads on blades and tower of parked turbine can be estimated separately and then combined for the estimation of total tower extreme response. In current wind turbine design practice, the tower extreme response due to the wind loads on blades is often represented as a static response under an equivalent static load in terms of a concentrated force and a moment at the tower top. This study presents an improved equivalent static load model with additional distributed inertial force on tower, and introduces the square-root-of-sum-square combination rule, which is shown to provide a better prediction of tower extreme response.

In this paper, an analysis method that considers the initial static displacement of structural members using an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom system is presented. Newmark's dynamic analysis algorithm was improved to consider the effect of the initial static displacements of structural members. The effect of the initial static displacement on the maximum response according to the assumed duration of the blast load and natural period of the member was investigated. The effects of positive and negative static displacements on the maximum dynamic responses of structural members subjected to a positively applied blast load were also studied. Modified response charts for the shock-type and pressure-type waves are presented so that static displacements can easily be considered. Using a design example, we demonstrate the significance of the modified response chart that considers the static displacement. Based on the results of this study, the maximum response of a the structural member can be easily obtained whilst considering its initial static displacement. The modified response chart presented in this study can be used for the structural design of plants and military facilities.

The determination of response characteristics for pressure sensors is routinely limited to static calibration against a deadweight pressure standard. The strength of this method is that the deadweight device is a primary standard used to generate precise pressure. Its weakness lies in the assumption that the static and dynamic responses of the sensor in question are equivalent. Differences in sensor response to static and dynamic events, however, can lead to serious measurement errors. Dynamic techniques are required to calibrate pressure sensors measuring dynamic events in milliseconds. In this paper, a dynamic calibration using negative going dynamic pressure is proposed to determine dynamic pressure response for piezoelectric sensors. Sensitivity and linearity of sensor by the dynamic calibration were compared with those by the static calibration. The uncertainty of calibration results and the goodness of fit test of linear regression analysis were presented. The results show that the dynamic calibration is applicable to determine dynamic pressure response for piezoelectric sensors.
