A method has been developed to tune the static stiffness at a rotation joint considering the whole machine tool system by interactive use of finite element method and experiment. This paper describes the procedure of this method and shows the results. The method uses the static experiment on measurement model which is set-up so that the effects of uncertain factors can be excluded. For FEM simulation, the rotation joint model is simplified using only spindle, bearing and spring. At the rotation joint, the damping coefficient is ignored, The spindle and bearing is connected by only spring. By static experiment, 500 N is forced to the front and behind portion of spindle and the deformation is measured by capacitive sensor. The deformation by FEM simulation is extracted with changing the static stiffness from the initial static stiffness considering only rotation joint. The tuning static stiffness is obtained by exploring the static stiffness directly trusting the deformation from the static experiment. Finally, the general tuning method of the static stiffness of machine tool joint is proposed using the force stream and the modal analysis of machine tool.
During the dynamic analysis of a system, the Coulomb friction law is emploved to calculate the friction force. Since the static friction coefficient is only employed during the zero relative velocity, it is impractical to employ the coefficient during the dynamic analysis. To calculate the static friction force, therefore, some friction models have been developed. In this study, the integration stability and the accuracy of the models are investigated with some numerical examples. The effect of time step size during the numerical integration is also investigated. The numerical study shows that the friction model employed for most commercial codes is not as good as the one proposed in this study.
Mechanical face seal installed in boiler feedwater pump prevents leakage of working fluid using thin fluid film between stator and rotor. If the leakage of working fluid exceeds the allowable volume, serious malfunction of boiler feedwater pump will be happen. The thinner fluid film exists between stator and rotor, the less working fluid leaks out. However, if the thickness of fluid film is not enough, the wear of seal face will be increased. And it causes the decrease in life of mechanical face seal. Therefore appropriate design is necessary to maximize the performance and life of mechanical face seal. In this study, numerical analysis using finite volume method was conducted to investigate the static characteristics of wavy mechanical face seals which have 4 different wavy surface profiles on rotor. As a result, opening force, leakage volume of working fluid and friction torque were obtained. For the same minimum film thickness, the static characteristics of mechanical face seal were affected by the wavy surface profile which can change the thickness of working fluid film and pressure distribution.
This paper presents the static and dynamic measurements for the strength and motion characteristics as well as the improved procedures to assess strength of wheel loaders. Two scenarios for static measurement were decided by which cylinder was actuating. The dynamic measurement was performed for two types of motion, that is, simple reciprocation of the working devices and actual working motion including traveling, digging and dumping. The measured items were stresses, cylinder pressures and strokes. Stress induced by bucket working showed higher level than that by boom working. The measured cylinder speeds were relatively superior to the design speeds. Working stress histories were thought to be closer to static rather than dynamic. A fully assembled FE model was prepared for structural analysis. In this paper, a more simple method was suggested to avoid nonlinearity caused by heave of rear frame under digging forces. Also how brake affected on structural behavior and digging force was examined closely in relation with tire pressure. It was confirmed that the overall stress level of wheel loader during turning traveling with loaded bucket was far lower than the yield stress of material.

This paper describes a quasi-static finite element analysis, which uses the explicit integration method, of the apex joint of a cold-formed steel portal frame. Such cold-formed steel joints are semi-rigid as a result of bolt-hole elongation. Furthermore, the channel-sections that are being connected have a reduced moment capacity as a result of a bimoment. In the finite element model described, the bolt-holes and bolt shanks are all physically modelled, with contact defined between them. The force-displacement curves obtained from the quasi-static analysis are shown to be similar to those of the experimental test results, both in terms of stiffness as well as failure load. It is demonstrated that quasi-static finite element analysis can be used to predict the behavior of cold-formed steel portal frame joints and overcome convergence issues experienced in static finite element analysis.
The bead is used to provide properly restraining force in the sheet metal forming process. This bead process includes bending and geometrical non-linearity, and affects the state of binderwrap. Therefore, the analysis of bead process is very important to obtain the desired formability. In this paper, the research about the influence of the punch stroke of bead on the draw-bead process was conducted. Results from the analysis will give useful information to the effective tool design of blank forming process. To analyze the bead process, and elasto-plastic finite element formulation is constructed from the equilibrium equation and the considered boundary conditions involved a proper contact condition. The static-explicit finite element method as a numerical method for the analysis was applied to the analysis program code. It was found that this method could solve too much computation time and convergence problem owing to high non-linearity of bead forming process.
Static ejection tests were conducted using the 2,000lb-Class Store to provide ejector model for the store separation simulation. In this study, static ejection test device for 2,000lb-class store was constructed and reaction force applied to store was measured over time. In addition, the trajectories of the ejected store were obtained using photogrammetry and compared with the simulations using developed ejector model. The results of the static ejection test were analyzed to determine the cartridge-orifice combination to be used for store separation. Flight tests were performed by applying the analysis results and verified that the store was safely separated from the aircraft.
A cycloidal speed reducer is a type of the speed reducers of machinery. The cycloidal speed reducer consists of two cycloidal plate gears, housing roller gear, input shaft, output pin and shaft, and eccentric bearings. Especially the cycloidal plate gear has the peculiar parts of the teeth, because of gearing with the housing roller gear that has the several rollers on the circular line. And then all teeth on the cycloidal plate gear can be designed to contact with the rollers on the housing roller gear at the same time. Therefore the cycloidal plate gear has always contact motion with rollers and the force is interacted between roller gear with cycloidal plate gear. Because the contact force and friction force must be required to improve the accuracy in design procedures of cycloidal speed reducers, this paper presents a force analysis considered friction effect approach derived by static force equilibrium condition, geometrical adaptation, instant velocity center method and relative velocity method.

This paper described the forces analysis of a hybrid linear pulse motor (HLPM) with high accuracy and repeatability. The HLPM is fed from a phase current by microstepping drive. The finite element method (FEM) is employed for calculating the force. The forces between mover(forcer) and stator(platen) have been calculated using the virtual work method. The detent force, rate of tooth width to tooth pitch and magnetic saturation were analyzed to considered the distortion characteristics of static thrust. The thrust to displacement produced a high pulsating force while the normal force is much higher than the thrust force.
This paper deals with the design and characteristic analysis of electro-magnet/permanent-magnet (EM-PM) hybrid levitation and propulsion device for high-speed magnetically levitated (maglev) vehicle. The machine requires PMs with high coercive force in order to levitate the vehicle by only PMs, and propulsion force is supplied by long-stator linear synchronous motor (LSM). The advantages of this configuration are an increasing levitation airgap length and decreasing total weight of the vehicle, because of the zero-power levitation control. Several design considerations such as machine structure, manufacturing, and control strategy are described. Moreover, the levitation and propulsion device for high-speed maglev vehicle has been designed and analyzed usign the electromagnetic circuit and FE analysis. In order to verify the design scheme and feasibility of maglev application, 3-DOF static force test set is implemented and tested. The obtained experimental data using the static tester shows the validity of the design and analysis approaches.
