A local damage identification method using measured structural static displacement is proposed in this study. Based on the residual force vector deduced from the static equilibrium equation, residual strain energy (RSE) is introduced, which can localize the damage in the element level. In the case of all the nodal displacements are used, the RSE can localize the true location of damage, while incomplete displacement measurements are used, some suspicious damaged elements can be found. A model updating method based on static displacement response sensitivity analysis is further utilized for accurate identification of damage location and extent. The proposed method is verified by two numerical examples. The results indicate that the proposed method is efficient for damage identification. The advantage of the proposed method is that only limited static displacement measurements are needed in the identification, thus it is easy for engineering application.

Bridge structures are designed to support ordinary loadings such as vehicles, wind, temperature and current as well as unexpected loadings like earthquakes and storm. Especially, the displacement of Flexible bridges like an suspension bridge under ordinary loading conditions is necessary to be monitored. In case of long span bridges, there are some difficulties in monitoring the displacement of center of the main span using traditional laser displacement sensors. In this study, the static and dynamic displacement responses due to vehicle loadings were measured by DGPS(differential global positioning system) technique. The displacement response data were compared with data obtained from traditional laser displacement sensors so that the static and dynamic behavior of the bridge under vehicle loadings was examined and the applicability of the displacement response measurement using DGPS technique was verified. The static and dynamic loading test for an self-anchored suspension bridge, So-rok Bridge, was performed using vehicles. The displacement response from DGPS technique and that from laser displacement sensors of the bridge monitoring system were compared. The amplitude of white noise from DGPS based measurement was about 7 mm and that of laser displacement sensor based measurement was about 3 mm. On the other hand, dynamic behavior of the center of main span from DGPS based measurement showed better agreement with influence line of the bridge than that from laser displacement sensors. In addition, there were some irregular and discontinuous variation of data due to the instability of GPS receivers or frequent appearance of GPS satellites. Post-processing via the reference station close to an observation post provided by NGII(National Geographic Information Institute) will be a counter-plan for these defects.

In this paper, an analysis method that considers the initial static displacement of structural members using an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom system is presented. Newmark's dynamic analysis algorithm was improved to consider the effect of the initial static displacements of structural members. The effect of the initial static displacement on the maximum response according to the assumed duration of the blast load and natural period of the member was investigated. The effects of positive and negative static displacements on the maximum dynamic responses of structural members subjected to a positively applied blast load were also studied. Modified response charts for the shock-type and pressure-type waves are presented so that static displacements can easily be considered. Using a design example, we demonstrate the significance of the modified response chart that considers the static displacement. Based on the results of this study, the maximum response of a the structural member can be easily obtained whilst considering its initial static displacement. The modified response chart presented in this study can be used for the structural design of plants and military facilities.

Vibration-based monitoring is one approach used to perform structural condition assessment. By measuring structural response, such as displacement, dynamic characteristics of a structure may be estimated. Often, the primary dynamic responses in civil structures are below 5 Hz, making accurate low frequency measurement critical for successful dynamic characterization. In addition, static deflection measurements are useful for structural capacity and load rating assessments. This paper presents a DC coupled continuous wave radar to accurately detect both dynamic and static displacement. This low-cost radar sensor provides displacement measurements within a compact, wireless unit appropriate for a range of structural monitoring applications. The hardware components and operating mechanism of the radar are introduced and a series of laboratory experiments are presented to assess the performance characteristics of the radar. The laboratory and field experiments investigate the effect of factors such as target distance, motion amplitude, and motion frequency on the radar's measurement accuracy. The results demonstrate that the radar is capable of both static and dynamic displacement measurements with sub-millimeter accuracy, making it a promising technology for structural health monitoring.

This paper aims to propose an image processing technique for measuring the static displacement of bridges from general inspection photograph; the color, shape, and spatial transformations of an arbitrary image stored in bridge management system database are used. This study is verified by using numerical analyses with experiments; the results demonstrate that the static displacement of bridges are measured by proposed technique. Moreover, this technique is able to obtain the static structural response of the bridge with changes in temperatures.
The residual displacement ratio (RDRs) response spectra have been generally used as an important means to evaluate the post-earthquake repairability, and the ratios of residual to maximum inelastic displacement are considered to be more appropriate for development of the spectra. This methodology, however, assumes that the expected residual displacement can be computed as the product of the RDRs and maximum inelastic displacement, without considering the correlation between these two variables, which inevitably introduces potential systematic error. For providing an adequately accurate estimate of residual displacement, while accounting for the collapse resistance performance prior to the repairability evaluation, a probability-based procedure to estimate the residual displacement demands using the nonlinear static analysis (NSA) is developed for single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems. To this end, the energy-based equivalent damping ratio used for NSA is revised to obtain the maximum displacement coincident with the nonlinear time history analysis (NTHA) results in the mean sense. Then, the possible systematic error resulted from RDRs spectra methodology is examined based on the NTHA results of SDOF systems. Finally, the statistical relation between the residual displacement and the NSA-based maximum displacement is established. The results indicate that the energy-based equivalent damping ratio will underestimate the damping for short period ranges, and overestimate the damping for longer period ranges. The RDRs spectra methodology generally leads to the results being non-conservative, depending on post-yield stiffness. The proposed approach emphasizes that the repairability evaluation should be based on the premise of no collapse, which matches with the current performance-based seismic assessment procedure.
In order to perform the spatial buckling analysis of the curved beam element with nonsymmetric thin-walled cross section, exact static stiffness matrices are evaluated using equilibrium equations and force-deformation relations. Contrary to evaluation procedures of dynamic stiffness matrices, 14 displacement parameters are introduced when transforming the four order simultaneous differential equations to the first order differential equations and 2 displacement parameters among these displacements are integrated in advance. Thus non-homogeneous simultaneous differential equations are obtained with respect to the remaining 8 displacement parameters. For general solution of these equations, the method of undetermined parameters is applied and a generalized linear eigenvalue problem and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices are solved with respect to 12 displacement parameters. Resultantly displacement functions are exactly derived and exact static stiffness matrices are determined using member force-displacement relations. The buckling loads are evaluated and compared with analytic solutions or results by ABAQUS's shell element.

In this study, static displacement sensors using lead switches are bonded on concrete beams and RC beams, and monitoring systems to crack damages are studied using radio frequency. If load is received on the center of flexible specimens, bonded static displacement sensors will be destroyed, and these become to send signals of damages at radio frequency system connected with static displacement sensors. Study of these functional building elements will be protected from external factors by unusual weather, earthquake, etc, in RC buildings and structures.

The monitoring to crack damages is studied using the radio frequency system and static displacement sensors. If load is received on the center of the flexible specimen, bonded sensors will be destroyed, and these are become to send signals of damages at the radio frequency system connected with sensors. This study is fundamental research of the monitoring damage system for diagnostic concrete elements using the radio frequency system and static displacement sensors.
A new damage identification technique using static displacement data is developed to assess the structural integrity of bridge structures. In the conventional damage assessment techniques using dynamic response, it is usually difficult to obtain a significant natural frequencies variation from the measured data because the natural frequencies variation is intrinsically not sensitive to the damage of a bridge. In this proposed identification method, the stiffness reduction of the bridges can be estimated using the static displacement data measured periodically and a specific loading test is not required. The static displacement data due to the dead load of the bridge structure can be measured by devices such as a laser displacement sensor. In this study, structural damage is represented by the reduction in the elastic modulus of the element. The damage factor of the element is introduced to estimate the stiffness reduction of the bridge under consideration. Finally, the proposed algorithm is verified using various numerical simulation and compared with other damage identification method. Also, the effect of noise and number of damaged elements on the identification are investigated. The results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient for damage identification of the bridges.
