  • Background: Masticating is an activity that is free from temporal or spatial constraints, with an advantage that it can be combined easily with other treatment methods. While several studies have reported a positive effect of the intervention of chewing using the jaw on postural stability, only a few studies were conducted on stroke patients. Objectives: To investigated the effects of masticating chewing gum on the static and dynamic balancing of stroke patients. Design: Randomized cross-over study design. Methods: Nineteen stroke patients were randomly assigned to the chewing group or control group. BT4 was used to measure the static and dynamic balancing abilities. Pre-test measurements were taken before mastication of chewing gum, and post-test measurements were taken after 2 days. The stroke patients in the chewing group were guided to sit on a chair and chew gum for 3 min, and their balancing abilities were simultaneously measured. The balancing abilities of the control group patients were measured while they sat at rest without masticating chewing gum. Results: The chewing group showed significant increases in the measures of static balance (i.e., C90 area, trace length, X mean, and Y mean). In the between-group comparison, the measures of static balance were significantly higher in the chewing group than in the control group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that masticating chewing gum enhanced the static balancing ability of stroke patients. Thus, gum chewing should be considered a viable clinical intervention to control posture in stroke patients.

  • This paper presents the performance of Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO) algorithm for optimum static balancing of a robot manipulator. Static balancing of robot manipulator is an important aspect of the overall robot performance and the most demanding process in any robot system to match the need for the production requirements. The average force on the gripper in the working area is considered as an objective function. Length of the links, angle between them and stiffness of springs are considered as the design variables. Three robot manipulator configurations are optimized. The results show the better or competitive performance of the TLBO algorithm over the other optimization algorithms considered by the previous researchers.

  • Asymmetrical and unbalanced features such as rotor blade of helicopter, actuator of hard-disk in personal computer are usually manufactured with composite materials. In this case, mass distributions and center of gravity of the parts are important because of their static balancing. Therefore in the manufacturing processes, it is needed to check out the exact data of weight and gravity center. In this study, it has been studied experimentally the balancing of laminated rotor blade by using multiple-point weighing method and lab-view system.

  • As the application of robotic systems expand its scope, more research efforts are given in providing mobility to the robotic systems so that they can travel across various paths including those with formidable obstacles such as stairways or rough terrains. Legged locomotion is mainly concerned because the walking motion, like that of animal behavior, has many advantages over wheel type or track type locomotion especially in rough terrain. Walking robot, in general, having a discrete number of legs, have inherently low static stability. Static stability can be increased to a certain degree, by improving walking method, but it has many limitations such as reduced travel speed. A very promising possibility lies in the use of balancing weight, nevertheless its actual implementation is very rare. In this study, a 4-legged walking machine is developed and the static stability margin is increased with the balancing weight. In the future, this robot will be used to take an experiment on the walking in mush terrain.

  • Momentum changing actuators like reaction wheels and control moment gyros are generally used for spacecraft attitude control. This type of actuators produces force and torque disturbances. These disturbances must be reduced since they degrade the quality of spacecraft attitude control. Major disturbances are mainly due to static and dynamic imbalances. This paper gives attention to the reduction of the static and dynamic imbalance. Force/torque measurement system is used to measure the disturbance of the test reaction wheel. An identification method for the location and magnitude of the imbalance is suggested, and the corrections of the imbalance are performed using balancing method. Through balancing, the static and dynamic imbalance is remarkably reduced.

  • Pressure balancing valve is one of important control devices, which is fully automatic and no manual controls, regulating or adjustments are needed. It is typically used to maintain constant temperature of working fluid in power and chemical plants and domestic water supply systems. Pressure balancing valve is composed of body, cylinder and balancing piston. Therefore, the balancing piston shapes are important design parameters for a pressure balancing valve. In this study, numerical and experimental analyses are carried out with two different balancing piston shapes. Especially, the distribution of static pressure is investigated to calculate the flow coefficient($C_v$). The governing equations are derived from making using of three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and SIMPLE algorithm. Using commercial code, PHOEIC, the pressure and flow fields in pressure balancing valve are depicted.

  • As Internet and WWW grow rapidly, the role of web servers is getting more important, and the number of users in a few popular site is also explosively increasing. Load balancing in clustered web server systems is important task to utilize whole system effectively, so dynamic load balancing is required to overcome the limit of static load balancing. In this paper, we propose two dynamic load balancing schemes, and analyzed load model and Performance improvement and also compare existing load balancing methods and IP filtering method. In case of load balancing with threshold, little extra traffic was required for better performance, but in case of load balancing with load weight, we found that the performance mainly depends on information exchange rate.

  • This paper proposes a three-phase current balancing strategy in a power transmission system employing distributed static series compensators (DSSCs). With the proposed variable quadrature voltage injection method, the DSSC emulates either an inductive or a capacitive impedance into the transmission line, and the magnitudes of the phase currents are balanced. Hence, the phase imbalances in the power transmission system are significantly reduced. As a result, the power transfer capability of the transmission lines can be improved. The operational principle of the DSSCs, the hardware structure and the control algorithm are described in detail. Finally, the theoretical analyses and the proposed strategy are experimentally verified through a scaled down transmission system with DSSC prototypes.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of fall injuries on the balancing abilities and ankle flexibility. Fifteen of the voluntary participants had no experience of falling in the last two years (none falling group, NFG) and 15 others experienced at least one (falling group, FG). Static balance (sway length, sway area), dynamic balance (timed up and go (TUG), and functional to reach test (FRT) were measured in each group. In comparison of static balance, sway length was not significantly different between NFG and FG in both eyes open and eyes close, however the sway area of the FG was significantly wider than that of the NFG (p<.05). In dynamic balance comparisons, TUG of FG was significantly longer than that of NFG (p <.05), however FRT and STS were no significant difference between groups. Ankle flexibility was significantly higher in NFG than in FG. This study suggests that the fall prevention program should include methods for improving ankle stability and lower extremity function.
