A Comparative Study on Structural Reliability Analysis Methods (구조 신뢰성 해석방법의 고찰)

  • In this paper, various reliability analysis methods for calculating a probability of failure are investigated for their accuracy and efficiency. Crude Monte Carlo method is used as a basis for the comparison of various numerical results. For the sampling methods, Importance Sampling method and Directional Simulation method are considered for overcoming a drawback of Crude Monte Carlo method. For the approximate methods, conventional Rackwitz-Fiessler method. 3-parameter Chen-Lind method, and Rosenblatt transformation method are compared on the basis of First order reliability method. As a Second-order reliability method, Curvature-Fitting paraboloid method, Point-fitting paraboloid method, and Log-likelihood function method are explored in order to verify the accuracy of the reliability calculation results. These methods mentioned above would have some difficulty unless the limit state equation is expressed explicitly in terms of random design variables. Thus, there is a need to develop some general reliability methods for the case where an implicit limit state equation is given. For this purpose, Response surface method is used where the limit state equation is approximated by regression analysis of the response surface outcomes resulted from the structural analysis. From the application of these various reliability methods to three examples, it is found that Directional Simulation method and Response Surface method are very efficient and recommendable for the general reliability analysis problem cases.

  • The problem of mathematical model for an unknown system by measureing its input-output data pairs is generally referred to as state estimates. The state estimation problem is often of importance in its own right since we may want to know the value of the states. For instance, in navigation, we may take noisy positional fixes using satelite or radar navigation, and the estimator can use these measurements to provide accurate estimates of current position, hedaing, and velocity. And the state estimates can also be used for control purposes. Then it is very important to know the state of plant. In this paper, the theory of the minimization of a loss function was used to design the fuzzy system. Here, the used teory is Least Square Esimation method. This parametrization has the Linear in the parameters charcteristic that allows standard parameter estimation technique to be used to estimate the parameters of the fuzzy system. The combination of the fuzzy system and the estimation m thod then performs as a nonlinear estimator. If several fuzzy label are defined for the input variables at the antecedent part, the fuzzy system then behaves as a collection of nonlinear estimators where different regions of rules have different parameters. In simulation results, the fuzzy model controlled a difference in the structure between the actual plant and the fuzzy estimator. It is also proved that the fuzzy system is equivalent to its transformed system. therefore we was able to get the state space equation of system with the estimated paramater.

Robust algorithm for estimating voltage stability by the modified method of sensitivity index dP/de of real value on voltage vector (전압벡터의 유효분 감도지표 dP/de 수정법에 의한 견고한 전압안정도 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, much attention has been paid to problems which is concerned with voltage instability phenomena and much works on these phenomena have been made. In this paper, by substituting d $P_{k}$ d $e_{k}$ ( $v^{\rarw}$= e +j f) for $P_{k}$ in conventional load flow, direct method for finging the limit of voltage stability is proposed. Here, by using the fact that taylor se- ries expansion in .DELTA. $P_{k}$ and .DELTA. $Q_{k}$ is terminated at the second-order terms, constraint equation (d $P_{k}$ d $e_{k}$ =0) and power flow equations are formulated with new variables .DSLTA. e and .DELTA.f, so partial differentiations for constraint equation are precisely calculated. The fact that iteratively calculated equations are reformulated with new variables .DELTA.e and .DELTA.f means that limit of voltage stability can be traced precisely through recalculation of jacobian matrix at e+.DELTA.e and f+.DELTA.f state. Then, during iterative process divergence may be avoid. Also, as elements of Hessian mat rix are constant, its computations are required only once during iterative process.   • Several computer programs have been developed to make stochastically generated weather data from observed daily data. But they require fully dataset to run WGEN. Mostly, meterological data frequently have sporadic missing data as well as totally missing data. The modified WGEN has data filling algorithm for incomplete meterological datasets. Any other WGEN models have not the function of data filling. Modified WGEN with data filling algorithm is processing from the equation of Matalas for first order autoregressive process on a multi dimensional state with known cross and auto correlations among state variables. The parameters of the equation of Matalas are derived from existing dataset and derived parameters are adopted to fill data. In case of WGEN (Richardson and Wright, 1984), it is one of most widely used weather generators. But it has to be modified and added. It uses an exponential distribution to generate precipitation amounts. An exponential distribution is easier to describe the distribution of precipitation amounts. But precipitation data with using exponential distribution has not been expressed well. In this paper, generated precipitation data from WGEN and Modified WGEN were compared with corresponding measured data as statistic parameters. The modified WGEN adopted a formula of CLIGEN for WEPP (Water Erosion Prediction Project) in USDA in 1985. In this paper, the result of other parameters except precipitation is not introduced.   • Two semi-analytic solutions for a perturbed two-body problem known as Lagrange planetary equations (LPE) were compared to a numerical integration of the equation of motion with same perturbation force. To avoid the critical conditions inherited from the configuration of LPE, non-singular orbital elements (EOE) had been introduced. In this study, two types of orbital elements, classical Keplerian orbital elements (COE) and EOE were used for the solution of the LPE. The effectiveness of EOE and the discrepancy between EOE and COE were investigated by using several near critical conditions. The near one revolution, one day, and seven days evolutions of each orbital element described in LPE with COE and EOE were analyzed by comparing it with the directly converted orbital elements from the numerically integrated state vector in Cartesian coordinate. As a result, LPE with EOE has an advantage in long term calculation over LPE with COE in case of relatively small eccentricity.

Damping for Wind Turbine Electrically Excited Synchronous Generators

  • The electrically excited synchronous generator (EESG) is applied in wind turbine systems recently. In an EESG control system, electrical torque is affected by stator flux and rotor current. So the control system is more complicated than that of the permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Thus, the higher demanding of the control system is required especially in case of wind turbine mechanical resonance. In this paper, the mechanism of rotor speed resonant phenomenon is introduced from the viewpoint of mechanics firstly, and the characteristics of an effective damping torque are illustrated through system eigenvalues analysis. Considering the variables are tightly coupled, the four-order small signal equation for torque is derived considering stator and rotor control systems with regulators, and the bode plot of the closed loop transfer function is analyzed. According to the four-order mathematical equation, the stator flux, stator current, and electrical torque responses are derived by torque reference step and ramp in MATLAB from a pure mathematical deduction, which is identical with the responses in PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results. At last, the simulation studies are carried out in PSCAD software package to verify the resonant damping control strategy used in the EESG wind turbine system.

  • This paper presents the results of the application of a computational fluid dynamics algorithm for the simulation of plasma flows of arc-heated jet. The underlying physical model is based on the axisymmetric form of the conservation equations that are coupled with an arc model including Ohm heating, electromagnetic forces. The arc model given as a source term in fluid dynamic equations is determined by a solution of electric potential field governed by an elliptic partial differential equation. The governing equation of electric field is loosely coupled with fluid dynamic equations by an electric conductivity that is a function of state variables. However, the electric fields and flow fields cannot be solved In fully coupled manner, but should be solved iteratively due to the different characteristics of governing equations. With this solution approach, several applications of arc flow analysis will be presented including Arc Thruster and Circuit Breaker.

An inverse dynamic trajectory planning for the end-point tracking control of a flexible manipulator

  • A manipulator system that needs significantly large workspace volume and high payload capacity has greater link flexibility than typical industrial robots and teleoperators. If link flexibility is significant, position control of the manipulator's end-effector exhibits the nonminimum phase, noncollocated, and flexible structure system control problems. This paper addresses inverse dynamic trajectory planning issues of a flexible manipulator. The inverse dynamic equation of a flexible manipulator was solved in the time domain. By dividing the inverse system equation into the causal part and the anticausal part, the inverse dynamic method calculates the feedforward torque and the trajectories of all state variables that do not excite structural vibrations for a given end-point trajectory. Through simulation and experiment with a single-Unk flexible manipulator, the effectiveness of the inverse dynamic method has been demonstrated.

Shape Design Sensitivity Analysis of Two-Dimensional Thermal Conducting Solids with Multiple Domains Using the Boundary Element Method (경계요소법을 이용한 2 차원 복수 영역 열전도 고체의 형상 설계 민감도 해석)

  • A method of the shape design sensitivity analysis based on the boundary integral equation formulation is presented for two-dimensional inhomogeneous thermal conducting solids with multiple domains. Shape variation of the external and interface boundary is considered. A sensitivity formula of a general performance functional is derived by taking the material derivative to the boundary integral identity and by introducing an adjoint system. In numerical analysis, state variables of the primal and adjoint systems are solved by the boundary element method using quadratic elements. Two numerical examples of a compound cylinder and a thermal diffuser are taken to show implementation of the shape design sensitivity analysis. Accuracy of the present method is verified by comparing analyzed sensitivities with those by the finite difference. As application to the shape optimization, an optimal shape of the thermal diffuser is found by incorporating the sensitivity analysis algorithm in an optimization program.

  • The core of the automotive industry's strategy to handle the climate change can be explained as the development and distribution of the vehicles with high fuel efficiencies and low emission. Clean Diesel, hydrogen fuel cell, electric, and especially hybrid power-train vehicles have been actively studied. This paper dynamically analyzes the performance of a hybrid system's five driving modes. The research subject consists of one engine, two electric motors, two simple planetary gears, and one compound planetary gears with five clutches. To define the steady state equation of the system, interaction formulas of five driving modes are introduced with motion variables and torque variables. These formulas are then used to analyze the speeds, torques, and power flows of each mode.
