SPECTRAL LINE-DEPTH RATIO AS A PRECISE EFFECTIVE TEMPERATURE AND SURFACE GRAVITY INDICATOR FOR WARM STARS

  • In order to determine the precise effective temperature and surface gravity of warm stars, all synthetic spectral lines in the wavelength range of $4000-5700{\AA}$ with T=6000-7750 K, and log g=3.5, 4.0, and 4.5 for [M/H]=0.0, $V_{rot}$=10 km $s^{-1}$, and $V_{tubl}$=2 km $s^{-1}$ were calculated using the SYNSPEC package(Hubeny, et al., 1995) and the Kurucz(1995) model. Then, the depth-ratios for all line pairs were investigated and we selected two and six depth-ratios appropriate for the surface gravity and temperature indicators, respectively. We plotted six grids with X- and Y-axes for the depth-ratios of surface gravity and temperature, respectively, for the simultaneous estimation of these two atmospheric parameters. This method was applied to the spectum of $\delta$ Scu for the determination of its temperature and surface gravity simultaneously.

CORONAL TEMPERATURE AS AN AGE INDICATOR

  • The X-ray spectra of late type stars can generally be well fitted by a two temperature component model of the corona. We find that the temperatures of both components are strong functions of stellar age, although the temperature of the hotter plasma in the corona shows a larger scatter and is probably affected by the activity of stars, such as flares. We confirm the power-law decay of the temperature of the hot plasma, but the temperature of the cool plasma component decays linearly with log(age).

  • Color excesses of classical Cepheids in the uvby color system are estimated for the calibration stars with distances from the literature that are measured independently. Intrinsic photometric indices for these stars are calculated and a calibrated empirical relation between (b - y)$_0$, period, [$c_1$], and [$m_1$] is derived through a linear fit. This relation is used to determine color excesses E(b-y) for 59 Cepheids. We also examine the period-color [log P : (b - y)$_0$] relation, and find no signs of nonlinearity. We estimate the effective temperature and surface gravity of several Cepheids using both Kurucz and MARCS/SSG grids for [Fe=H]=0.0. We confirm that both temperature and surface gravity are higher, by about 150K and 0.4 respectively, when the MARCS/SSG atmospheric grids are used.

THE PROBLEMS IN THE USUAL METHOD OF CLASSIFICATION FOR METAL POOR STARS

  • The usual method of classification for metal poor stars is based on the normal standard stars. In this study, we show that among the sample of stars classified by this method, a systematic bias in the observed classes of metal weakness is found and, also that this method is not appropriate for classification of metal poor stars, by showing that the spectral line dependences on the temperature and pressure in the extreme metal poor stars are different from those in the normal standard stars. Therefore, we suggest that the 3-dimensional classification system, like 2-dimensional MK system, is necessary for an accurate classification of metal poor stars.

  • The temperature calibration of stars by photometric parameters and spectral type is discussed, using the catalogue data of Cayrel de Strobel et al. (1985) and Morel et al. (1976). The H-R diagrams and the mass-luminosity relation of stars in this catalogue are presented in the [log(L/M)-log $T_e$]-and [$M_{bol}$-log(L/M)]-planes, respectively, discussing the age of main sequence (MS) stars and giant stars. The age-metallicity relation of the nearby stars suggests the initial rapid enrichment of metal abundance.

PHOTOMETRIC PROPERTIES AND METALLICITY OF V1719 CYGNI

  • We collect 24 times of light maxima data from sources in the literature, unpublished data and open databases, and investigate the variations of the observed and calculated (O-C) values for light maxima of V1719 Cyg. We found no evidence of the variations in the (O-C) values. We estimate the effective temperature and surface gravity using both the Kurucz and MARCS/SSG grids for different metallicity values [A/H]=0.0 and +0.5 for V1719 Cyg. It is confirmed that the temperature is almost the same, but, in the case of surface gravity, the MARCS/SSG grid gives the value closest to that obtained from the period-gravity relation derived by using the pulsation-evolution theory. We obtain two spectra of V1719 Cyg from spectroscopic observation which permitted us to find the effective temperature and the surface gravity of the star directly. We estimate the metallicity and it is found that the abundance of iron is equal to the solar value.

The Effective Temperature of the N Stars (탄소성(炭素星)(N성(星))의 유효온도)

  • Photoelectric observations were made of four N stars (HD 51208, HD 75021, V 1942 Sgr, and RU Vir) at careful1y chosen discrete wavelengths between $7000{\AA}\;and\;11000{\AA}$ with $30{\AA}$ bandpass width. Their effective temperatures have been derived by fitting the black-body radiation curve to the observed continuum intensities at $7800{\AA},\;9000{\AA}\;and\;10800{\AA}$. The resulting temperature ranges from $2500^{\circ}K\;to\;2900^{\circ}K.$. It is probable that almost all the N stars belong to this range of temperature. However, the temperatures of very red N stars can not be well determined due to large variability and redistribution of their radiation energy arising from the graphite shells around them.

DUST SHELL MODELS FOR LOW MASS-LOSS RATE OXYGEN-RICH AGB STARS

  • We investigate the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of low mass-loss rate O-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars using the infrared observational data including the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) data. Comparing the results of detailed radiative transfer model calculations with observations, we find that the dust formation temperature is much lower than 1000 K for standard dust shell models. We find that the superwind model with a density-enhanced region can be a possible alternative dust shell model for LMOA stars.

Dust Disks Around Young Stellar Objects

  • To reproduce the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of young stellar objects (YSOs), we perform radiative transfer model calculations for the circumstellar dust disks with various shapes and many dust species. For eight sample objects of T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars, we compare the theoretical model SEDs with the observed SEDs described by the infrared space observatory and Spitzer space telescope spectral data. We use the model, CGPLUS, for a passive irradiated circumstellar dust disk with an inner hole and an inner rim for the eight sample YSOs. We present model parameters for the dust disk, which reproduce the observed SEDs. We find that the model requires a higher mass, luminosity, and temperature for the central star for the Herbig Ae/Be stars than those for the T Tauri stars. Generally, the outer radius, total mass, thickness, and rim height of the theoretical dust disk for the Herbig Ae/Be stars are larger than those for the T Tauri stars.

  • $Str\ddot{o}mgren$-system colors for 23 OV stars compiled by Crawford have been compared with colors calculated by Mihalas from non-LTE model atmospheres. In this way, effective temperatures of these stars have been determined and plotted against spectral type, $c_1$ (u-b), (b-y), (U-B), and (B-V). Within the accuracy of the observations, effective temperatures derived from the photometry for these 23 main-sequence stars are found to be in good agreement with Contiis spectroscopical temperatures.
