Intensity interferometry, based on the Hanbury Brown--Twiss effect, is a simple and inexpensive method for optical interferometry at microarcsecond angular resolutions. Motivated by recent technical developments, we argue that the sensitivity of large modern intensity interferometers can be improved by factors up to approximately 25,000, corresponding to 11 photometric magnitudes, compared to the pioneering Narrabri Stellar Interferometer of the 1970s when resolving. Our approach, based on spectrally resolved light, permits the construction of large optical interferometers at the cost of (very) long-baseline radio interferometers. Realistic intensity interferometers are able to spatially resolve main-sequence O-type stars in the Magellanic Clouds. Multi-channel intensity interferometers can address a wide variety of science cases: (i) linear radii, effective temperatures, and luminosities of stars; (ii) mass-radius relationships of compact stellar remnants; (iii) stellar rotation; (iv) stellar convection and the interaction of stellar photospheres and magnetic fields; (v) the structure and evolution of multiple stars; (vi) direct measurements of interstellar distances; (vii) the physics of gas accretion onto supermassive black holes; and (viii) calibration of amplitude interferometers by providing a sample of calibrator stars.
The presence of multiple populations is now well-established in most globular clusters (GCs) in the Milky Way. In light of this progress, here we suggest a new model explaining the origin of the Sandage period-shift and the difference in mean period of type ab RR Lyrae variables () between the two Oosterhoff groups. In our models, while matching the observed color-magnitude diagrams, the difference in is naturally reproduced as the instability strip is occupied by different subpopulations with increasing metallicity. The instability strip in the metal-poor group II clusters is populated by second generation stars (G2) with enhanced helium and CNO abundances, while the RR Lyraes in the metal-rich group I clusters are mostly produced by first generation stars (G1) without these enhancements. This population shift within the instability strip can create the observed period-shift between the two groups, since both helium and CNO abundances play a role in increasing the period of RR Lyrae variables. The presence of more metal-rich Oosterhoff group III clusters having RR Lyraes with longest can also be reproduced, if more helium-rich third generation stars (G3) are present in these GCs.
As a result of our decade-long effort, we developed a new approach wherein small-aperture telescope powered by ingeniously designed narrow-band filter systems can have the capability to measure not only the heavy but also the lighter elemental abundances of the red-giant branch (RGB) and asymptotic-giant branch (AGB) stars in the globular clusters. Our novel approach can complement the intrinsic weakness of the results from the prestigious instruments, such as HST and the VLT. In our talk, we will present the multiple stellar populations of the RGB and the AGB stars in M5, as a pilot work.
Several contact binary systems in four stellar clusters or their fields are reported here; NGC7789-V12, EP Cep and ES Cep in NGC188, NGC104-V95 and V710 Mon. Their multiple light curves were analyzed by the 2010 version of the W-D code, and their physical parameters were obtained.
We present empirical fiducial sequences for horizontal-branch (HB) stars in a set of bright Galactic globular clusters previously observed in SDSS (An et al. 2008). Mean loci of HB stars are derived on color-magnitude diagrams with multiple color indices (u - g, g - r, g - i, and g - z ) in order to identify foreground/background objects as well as cluster RR Lyrae variables. We compare our fiducial sequences to the model predictions from Yonsei-Yale isochrones and test the accuracy of the stellar evolution models.
The presence of multiple stellar populations is now well established in most globular clusters (GCs) in the Milky Way. The origin of this, however, is yet to be understood. In this respect, the study of NGC 2808, a GC which hosts five sub-populations differing only in light-element abundances, would help to understand the origin of this multiple stellar populations. In order to investigate CN, CH, and Ca abundances among different populations in NGC 2808, we have performed low-resolution spectroscopy for the red giant branch (RGB) stars in this GC. Here we report preliminary results from this spectroscopic analysis.
A number of recent observations have established that many globular clusters have double or multiple stellar populations. In particular, recent Calcium and Stromgren b & photometry shows a split in the RGB of some of these globular clusters, including M22, NGC 1851, and NGC 288. However, the origin of this split in the RGB is still controversial. In order to confirm the real difference in Calcium abundance between the two RGBs, we have performed low resolution spectroscopy for RGB stars in these globular clusters. The spectral data were obtained from WFCCD/duPont 2.5m telescope in Las Campanas Observatory. We found a significant bimodality of both Calcium and CN abundances in M22 and NGC 1851. NGC 288, however, shows a clear bimodality only in CN abundance.
We present images of L1551 IRS5 at angular resolutions as high as ${\~}$30 mas, corresponding to a spatial resolution of ${\~}$5 AU, made at 7 mm with the VLA. Previously known to be a binary protostellar system, we show that L1551 IRS5 is likely a triple protostellar system. The primary and secondary components have a projected separation of ${\~}$46 AU, whereas the tertiary component has a projected separation of ${\~}$11 AU from the primary component. The circumstellar dust disks of the primary and secondary components have dimensions of ${\~}$15 AU, whereas that of the tertiary component has a dimension of ${\~}$10 AU. Their major axes are closely, but not perfectly, aligned with each other, as well as the major axis of the surrounding flattened, rotating, and contracting molecular condensation (pseudodisk). Furthermore, the orbital motion of the primary and secondary components is in the same direction as the rotational motion of this pseudodisk. We suggest that all three protostellar components formed as a result of the fragmentation of the central region of the molecular pseudo disk. The primary and secondary components, but apparently not the tertiary component, each exhibits a bipolar ionized jet that is centered on and which emergers perpendicular to its associated dust disk. Neither jets are resolved along their base, implying that they are driven within a radial distance of ${\~}$2.5 AU from their central protostars. Finally, we show evidence for what may be dusty matter streams feeding the two main protostellar components.
We report relative proper motion measurements of $H_{2}O$ masers in massive star-forming region W51 Main, based on data sets of VLBI observations for $H_{2}O$ masers at 22 GHz with Japanese VERA telescopes from 2003 to 2006. Data reductions and single-beam imaging analysis are to measure internal kinematics of maser spots and eventually to estimate the three-dimensional kinematics of $H_{2}O$ masers in W51 Main. Average space motions and proper motion measurements of $H_{2}O$ masers are given both graphical and in table formats. We find in this study that W51 Main appears to be associated with hyper-compact H II region with multiple massive proto-stars whose spectral types are of late O.
We present a set of fiducial sequences of horizontal-branch stars in bright Galactic globular clusters, which have previously been observed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We derive fiducial lines on color-magnitude diagrams in multiple color indices (g - r, g - i, g - z, and u - g), after rejecting foreground and background objects as well as RR Lyrae variables utilizing these color indices. We compare our fiducial sequences with model predictions from Yonsei-Yale evolutionary tracks and BaSel spectral libraries, and find a satisfactory agreement between them in terms of their color-magnitude relations, except in u - g. We also compare theoretical models to color-magnitude diagrams of two open clusters (M67 and NGC 6791). Based on our best available cluster distance and reddening, we find that the mass of red clump (RC) stars in NGC 6791 is about a factor of two smaller than an earlier estimate from the application of asteroseismic scaling relations for solar-like oscillations. The smaller RC mass implies an enhanced mass loss along the red giant branch, which is in accordance with other compelling evidences found in this metal-rich system. Our estimated luminosity of RC stars in NGC 6791 is about 0.2 mag fainter than in earlier investigations based on solar-metallicity calibrations, and results in ~10% reduction in the RC-based distance estimation, when applied to metal-rich systems such as in the Galactic bulge.
