We have conducted a near-infrared monitoring campaign at the UK InfraRed Telescope (UKIRT), of the Local Group galaxy M33. The main aim was to identify stars in the very final stage of their evolution, and for which the luminosity is more directly related to the birth mass than the more numerous less-evolved giant stars that continue to increase in luminosity. The pulsating giant stars (AGB and red supergiants) are identified and their distributions are used to derive the star formation rate as a function of age. These stars are also important dust factories; we measure their dust production rates from a combination of our data with Spitzer Space Telescope mid-IR photometry. The mass-loss rates are seen to increase with increasing strength of pulsation and with increasing bolometric luminosity. Low-mass stars lose most of their mass through stellar winds, but even super-AGB stars and red superginats lose ~40% of their mass via a dusty stellar wind. We construct a 2-D map of the mass-return rate, showing a radial decline but also local enhancements due to agglomerations of massive stars. By comparing the current star formation rate with total mass input to the ISM, we conclude that the star formation in the central regions of M33 can only be sustained if gas is accreted from further out in the disc or from circum-galactic regions.
The relationship between orbital periods of cataclysmic variables (CV) and mass-loss rates of their donor stars is an important subject of theoretical researches. The observed donor's radii are oversized in comparison with those of isolated unperturbed stars of the same mass, which is thought to be a consequence of the mass-loss. Using the empirical mass-radius relation of CVs and the Hayashi theory for changes in effective temperature, orbital period, and luminosity of the donor with the stellar radius, we find the mass-loss rate of CVs as a function of the orbital period P. The derived mass-loss rate is more or less constant at 10-9.6-10-10M$\odot$ yr-1 with P above 90 minutes and declines very rapidly with P below 90 minutes, reaching 10-10.3-10-11.7M$\odot$ yr-1 when P is close to the minimum period. The turnaround behavior of the mass-loss rate shape with P near the minimal period is much less pronounced than suggested by earlier numerical models, making observational detection of the turnaround highly unlikely. When applied to our new results, SDSS 1035, 1507, 1501 and 1433 systems, previously known as post-bounce CVs, are more likely to be systems that have yet to reach the minimal period.
We present the final results of our study on the mass-loss rate of donor stars in cataclysmic variables (CVs). Observed donors are oversized in comparison with those of isolated single stars of the same mass, which is thought to be a consequence of the mass loss. Using the empirical mass-radius relation of CVs and the homologous approximation for changes in effective temperature T2, orbital period P, and luminosity of the donor with the stellar radius, we find the semi-empirical mass-loss rate M2dot of CVs as a function of P. The derived M2dot is at ~10-9.5-10-10 $M\odot$/yr and depends weakly on P when P > 90 min, while it declines very rapidly towards the minimum period when P < 90 min. The semi-empirical M2dot is significantly different from, and has a less-pronounced turnaround behavior with P than suggested by previous numerical models. The semi-empirical P-M2dot relation is consistent with the angular momentum loss due to gravitational wave emission, and strongly suggests that CV secondaries with 0.075 $M\odot$ < M2 < 0.2 $M\odot$ are less than 2 Gyrs old. When applied to selected eclipsing CVs, our semi-empirical mass-loss rates are in good agreement with the accretion rates derived from the effective temperatures T1 of white dwarfs. Based on the semi-empirical M2dot, SDSS 1501 and 1433 systems that were previously identified as post-bounce CVs have yet to reach the minimal period.
Binary systems of a white dwarf showing mass transfer activities are classified into cataclysmic variables and symbiotic stars. In the case of cataclysmic variables, the companion is usually a late type main sequence star filling its Roche lobe, where material is transferred through the inner Lagrangian point to form an accretion disk around the white dwarf. The disk becomes unstable and highly viscous when the surface density exceeds the critical density, leading to dwarf nova outbursts. In contrast, symbiotic stars are wide binary systems having a giant as the mass donor. Some fraction of giant stellar wind is accreted to the white dwarf giving rise to various symbiotic activities. In particular, half of symbiotics show Raman O VI at 6830 and 7088, which are important spectroscopic probe of mass transfer process. Monitoring observations using 1 m class telescopes will produce valuable information regarding the mass loss and mass transfer to white dwarf stars, shedding much light on the last stage of stellar evolution of low and intermediate mass stars.
The hydrogen-rich envelope mass of a dying massive star is the key factor that determines the type and properties of the resulting supernova. Emulating wind-driven mass loss of single stars with the MESA(Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics) stellar evolution code, we made a grid of models for a large parameter space of initial mass (12 M⊙ to 30M⊙), metallicity (solar, LMC and SMC), hydrogen envelope mass (0.01M⊙ to 10M⊙) for progenitor stars in their final step of evolution. Our results suggest the final luminosity of the progenitor is largely determined by the initial mass, which means there is luminosity degeneracy for stars with the same initial mass but with different hydrogen-rich envelope masses. Since we can break this degeneracy by correcting luminosity with surface gravity (spectroscopic HR diagram), we can infer the exact mass property of an observed progenitor. The surface temperature drastically varies near the envelope mass of ~0.1M⊙ and surface temperature of ~10000 K, where the demarcation between the hydrogen-rich envelope and the helium core lies, which explains the rarity of 'white' supergiants. There also exists a discontinuity in the chemical composition of the progenitor envelope around this critical hydrogen-rich envelope mass of ~0.1 M⊙, which can be tested in future observations of "flash spectroscopy" of supernovae.
The progenitors of Type Ibc supernovae (SNe Ibc) have been believed to be massive Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars, formed either through stellar wind mass loss or Roche-lobe outflow in a binary system. But observations indicate that ordinary SNe Ibc have relatively low ejecta masses (~2 Msun), which is not compatible with the WR star scenario for SN Ibc progenitors. On the other hand, helium stars in binary systems which can be produced via mass transfer are also suggested as a possible candidate for SN Ibc progenitors. Binary star evolution models predict that SN Ibc progenitors having final masses of 3-7 Msun can be produced, but their observational properties are not well understood. In this study, we present the parameter study on the observational constraints of helium stars of 3-5 Msun in binary systems using evolutionary models and the atmospheric radiative transfer code CMFGEN. We present the predicted magnitudes and spectra of helium stars in optical bands for different wind velocity profiles and mass loss rates. We also present those observables of the progenitor binary system considering O-type companion stars. Based on the results, we discuss the expected observational properties of SN Ibc progenitors in binary systems. In particular, we discuss the constraints on the progenitor of the SN Ib iPTF13bvn of which progenitor candidate has been identified for the first time in pre-explosion images among SNe Ibc.
We present a set of fiducial sequences of horizontal-branch stars in bright Galactic globular clusters, which have previously been observed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We derive fiducial lines on color-magnitude diagrams in multiple color indices (g - r, g - i, g - z, and u - g), after rejecting foreground and background objects as well as RR Lyrae variables utilizing these color indices. We compare our fiducial sequences with model predictions from Yonsei-Yale evolutionary tracks and BaSel spectral libraries, and find a satisfactory agreement between them in terms of their color-magnitude relations, except in u - g. We also compare theoretical models to color-magnitude diagrams of two open clusters (M67 and NGC 6791). Based on our best available cluster distance and reddening, we find that the mass of red clump (RC) stars in NGC 6791 is about a factor of two smaller than an earlier estimate from the application of asteroseismic scaling relations for solar-like oscillations. The smaller RC mass implies an enhanced mass loss along the red giant branch, which is in accordance with other compelling evidences found in this metal-rich system. Our estimated luminosity of RC stars in NGC 6791 is about 0.2 mag fainter than in earlier investigations based on solar-metallicity calibrations, and results in ~10% reduction in the RC-based distance estimation, when applied to metal-rich systems such as in the Galactic bulge.
We present recent data of absolute measurements of flux emmitted in the visible continua of some galactic Wolf-Rayet stars, carried out by means of a two-channel scanner built up cooperatively by the Observatoire de Lyon and the Laboratoire d'Astronomie Spatiale. Our measurements lead to the determination of stellar angular diameters which enable us to compute log $L_*/L_{\odot}$ and to locate the WR stars in the HR diagram: The WR stars are cooler than the zero age main sequence (ZAMS) and the WN7, WN8 types appear more luminous than other subclasses. The stellar wind terminal velocities, $V_{\infty}$, deduced from the empirical relation of the effective temperatures by Underhil1(1983) and $V_{\infty}$ adopted from the work of Willis(1982) show about 2,000km/s. We derived the rate of mass loss for the program stars from the formula, $\dot{M}={\varepsilon}(T_{eff})\;L/V_{\infty}{\cdot}c$ by using the obtained effective temperatures, luminosities and $V_{\infty}$ in this work. Their values range from $\dot{M}=1.4{\times}10^{-5}$ to $\dot{M}=5.8{\times}10^{-5}\;\dot{M}_{\odot}/yr$.
Many symbiotic stars exhibit features formed through Raman scattering with hydrogent atom, which can be useful in probing the mass loss and mass transfer processes. These include Raman scattered O VI 6830, 7088, Raman scattered He II 6545, 4850, 4332, and broad wings around Balmer emission lines. In this study we investigate the basic properties of broad Balmer wings formed through Raman scattering using a Monte Carlo technique. Special attention is made on the symmetry of the wings which is expected to be broken due to asymmetric scattering cross section. In this poster, we show preliminary results.
