The first all-sky mid-/far-infrared survey by IRAS in the 1980s, has been followed by only two more, by AKARI, from 2006, and WISE in 2010. I discuss some features of the WISE survey, and highlight some key results from early extragalactic observations that have been made by the science team during the operation of the telescope, and the post-operation proprietary period during which the public release data products were being generated. The efficient survey strategy and very high-data rate from WISE produced a catalogue of 530 million objects that was released to the public in March 2012. The WISE survey strategy naturally provided the deepest coverage at the ecliptic poles, where matched comparison fields were obtained using Spitzer, and where AKARI also observed deep fields. I describe some of the follow-up work that has been carried out based on the WISE survey, and the prospects for enhancing the WISE data by combining the AKARI survey results are also discussed. While the all-sky AKARI survey is less deep than the WISE catalogue, and is still being worked on by the AKARI science team, it includes a larger number of bands, extends to longer wavelengths, and in particular has very complementary band passes to WISE in the mid-infrared waveband, which will provide enhanced spectral information for relatively bright targets.
This paper presents $H{\alpha}$ emission line detections for four galaxies at z > 3.5 made with AKARI as part of the FUHYU mission program. These are the highest-redshift $H{\alpha}$ detections to date in star-forming galaxies. AKARI's unique near-infrared spectroscopic capability has made these detections possible. For two of these galaxies, this represents the first evidence of their redshifts and confirms their physical association with a companion radio galaxy. The star formation rates (SFRs) estimated from the $H{\alpha}$ lines under-predict the SFRs estimated from their far-infrared luminosities by a factor of ~ 2 - 3. We have also detected broad $H{\alpha}$ components in the two radio galaxies which indicate the presence of quasars.

We observed a bright type Ia Supernovae SN 2014J located in the nearby starburst galaxy M82 using BOES (Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph) for eight nights from day -11 (Jan. 22) to day +102 (May. 15) with respect to maximum brightness in B-band. We found the lines formed in the ejecta such as Si ($6300{\AA}$), whose velocity is more than 10,000km/s respect to the host galaxy as well as those formed in the circumstellar material (e.g. Na I D [$5890{\AA}$, $5896{\AA}$], 100km/s) Also, we found other weak iron ($5780{\AA}$, $5797{\AA}$, $6376{\AA}$, $6613{\AA}$, and $7543{\AA}$), carbon ($8059{\AA}$) and other unknown elements. These lines are also thought to have been formed in circumstellar material. We expect that this study will contribute to revelation of the nature of the progenitor stars.

IC 10 is one of the most well-known irregular starburst dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. Its low metal and oxygen abundance together with proximity make it an excellent laboratory to test star formation models, especially in low-metallicity systems like galaxies in the early Universe as well as many other local dwarfs. Among a number of active star forming regions, we have detected H2O kilo-maser emission in the south-east region of IC 10(IC 10 SE) using the Korean VLBI Network(KVN). This maser line is likely to be associated with a giant molecular cloud identified in IC 10 SE by former CO studies. Using the HI and CO data from the VLA and SMA archive, we probe the atomic and molecular gas properties of IC 10 SE. We discuss how the cool gas morphology and kinematics are related with maser and star formation activity in IC 10 SE.
The attenuation of starlight by dust in galactic environments is investigated through models of radiative transfer in a spherical, clumpy interstellar medium (ISM). We show that the attenuation curves are primarily determined by the wavelength dependence of absorption rather than by the underlying extinction (absorption+scattering) curve; the observationally derived attenuation curves cannot constrain a unique extinction curve unless the absorption or scattering efficiency is specified. Attenuation curves consistent with the Calzetti curve are found by assuming the silicate-carbonaceous dust model for the Milky Way (MW), but with the $2175{\AA}$ bump suppressed or absent. The discrepancy between our results and previous work that claimed the Small Magellanic Cloud dust to be the origin of the Calzetti curve is ascribed to the difference in adopted albedos; we use the theoretically calculated albedos whereas the previous ones adopted empirically derived albedos from observations of reflection nebulae. It is found that the model attenuation curves calculated with the MW dust are well represented by a modified Calzetti curve with a varying slope and UV bump strength. The strong correlation between the slope and UV bump strength, as found in star-forming galaxies at 0.5 < z < 2.0, is well reproduced if the abundance of the UV bump carriers is assumed to be 30-40% of that of the MW-dust; radiative transfer effects lead to shallower attenuation curves with weaker UV bumps as the ISM is more clumpy and dustier. We also argue that some of local starburst galaxies have a UV bump in their attenuation curves, albeit very weak.

Amineterminated, ethylenediamine core polyamidoamine starburst dendrimers of generation 2 (G2), generation 4 (G4) and generation 6 (G6) have been successfully surface-modified via an amide coupling reaction with 4-ethyl, 4'-(3-propionic) bipyridinium cation and the electrochemical behavior of the resulting dendrimers were investigated in aqueous potassium chloride electrolyte solutions. The 1-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide-mediated reaction resulted in 25-39% end-group functionalization. The water-soluble 4-ethyl, 4'-(3-propylamide) bipyridinium dibromide dendrimers (G2-V2+, G4-V2+ and G6-V2+) were characterized by $^1H$ NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopic methods. The cyclic voltammetric and chronoamperometric experiments were performed to determine the diffusion coefficient and the number of electrons transferred in the process of the first reduction of the viologen-functionalized dendrimers. Adsorption of viologen-functionalized dendrimers at electrode surface was evidenced in the voltammograms. Experimentally determined diffusion coefficients were in good agreement with the values expected from the Stokes-Einstein relation, while the number of electrons transferred concurred with the extent of functionalization determined by $^1H$ NMR and UV-Vis spectra.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features have emerged as one of the most important infrared (IR) features since these PAH features dominate mid-IR spectra of galaxies and are ubiquitous within galactic and extragalactic objects. These PAH features have the potentials to become reliable star formation rate (SFR) proxies and diagnostics of physical conditions of interstellar medium, such as ionization states of dust grains and grain sizes. While constructing an unbiased library of 44 sample galaxies selected from 5MUSES sample, AKARI mJY Unbiased Survey of Extragalactic Sources in 5MUSES (AMUSES) intends to measure and to calibrate the PAH 3.3 mm emission feature which has not been studied extensively due to its weak strength and dearth of capable instruments. Out of 20 target galaxies, we detected the 3.3mm feature from eight galaxies and measured their line strengths, line widths and line ratios with other PAH emission features. Sample galaxies whose spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are classified as starburst-type have clearly stronger 3.3mm emission features than ones with AGN-type SEDs. We also found that there is a correlation between the PAH 3.3mm luminosity and total IR luminosity within our sample galaxies, albeit a large scatter. We further discuss implications of our results.
We explore the role of various environments in triggering star formation (SF) and narrow-line active galactic nucleus (AGN) in SDSS spiral galaxies and the SF-AGN connection, using a volume-limited sample with $M_r$ < -19.5 and 0.02 < z < 0.055 selected from the SDSS Release 7. To avoid the dependency of AGN activity on bulge mass, the central velocity dispersion of the sample galaxies is limited to have a narrow range of $130{\leq}{\sigma}{\leq}200km\;s^{-1}$. We note that in gas sufficient galaxies, AGN feeding lags behind starburst, whereas as the gas exhausts, the SF slows down and AGN seems to even prevent the SF, and thus divide the high-${\sigma}$ sample into two subsamples according to their cold gas content at central region traced by fiber star formation rate, $SFR_{fib}$. We find that a high density (cluster) environment causes a significant increase in AGN activity as well as gas depletion in host galaxies. However, the finding is only noticeable in the high-${\sigma}$ and low $SFR_{fib}$ sample. It seems that a galaxy interaction with the nearest neighbor directly affects the SF of the central region. However, it is unclear whether it directly affects AGN activity.
We report on a photometric study of star clusters in the circumnuclear star-forming region of nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC 1672. We use FUV to NIR imaging data (FUV, U, B, V, R, $H{\alpha}$, I, and H) in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive. We have selected 89 star clusters with V<21.8 (MV<-9) mag in the central 600 pc region, and have derived their age & mass by comparing their colors with theoretical population synthesis models. Most of the star clusters are mildly reddened (E(B-V)~0.2 on average), but some star clusters suffer from severe reddening (E(B-V)>0.6). The mass of the star clusters are in the range from $10^4\;M_{\odot}$ to $10^7\;M_{\odot}$. About half of them are more massive than $10^5\;M_{\odot}$. Their ages range from 1 Myr to several 100 Myr, and concentrate at ~6 Myr and ~40 Myr. It indicates that the episodic starburst in the circumnuclear star-forming region lasted at least several 100 Myr. We find no obvious azimuthal age gradient, but we find a radial age gradient in some regions. We discuss these properties with theoretical expectations.

We report the spatial distribution of early-type stars and pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars around the starburst type young open cluster Westerlund 2. The early-type were selected from UBVI photometric data, while the PMS members were identified from their X-ray emission and mid-infrared excess. The northern clump of the cluster is composed mainly of PMS stars detected in both optical and X-ray and seems to be coeval to the cluster, while PMS stars in the bright bridge region are highly obscured in optical wavelength. The bright bridge appear to be an on-going star forming region possibly triggered by the strong radiation field from both sides-massive stars in Westerlund 2 and WR 20b. We also found that there are many early-type stars not only in the cluster but also farther from the cluster up to several times of the cluster radius. These early-type stars are well aligned from east to southwest of the cluster. We conclude these early-type stars are members of an OB association in the RCW 49 nebula. This report indicates there is a complex star formation history in Westerlund 2 and its surrounding H II region, the RCW 49 nebula.
