We model the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of Class 0 protostar L1527 IRS using a radiative transfer code RADMC-3D. In addition to the photometry data from literatures, we include the Herschel/PACS data which well covers the far-infrared SED peak of L1527 IRS, providing precise constraints to the density structure and other physical properties of its circumstellar envelope. Previously, Tobin et al. (2013) presented a dust continuum modeling results using a rotating and infalling envelope (Terebey and Shu, & Cassen 1984 ; TSC envelope), which originally describes a power-law density profile (${\rho}{\propto}r-{\alpha}$) with the power-law index (${\alpha}$) of 1.5. However, we find that Herschel/PACS data are better fitted with a shallower power-law density profile. This smaller power-law might be attributed to a inner envelope. Thus, we fit the SED of L1527 IRS with a Bonnor-Ebert sphere, which is a combination of the inner flat-topped and the outer power-law (${\alpha}=2$) density profiles. This Bonnor-Ebert sphere is often used to explain the density profile of prestellar cores, which is considered the earliest stages of star formation. The well-fitted SED with a Bonnor-Ebert sphere suggests that L1527 IRS might have collapsed from a Bonnor-Ebert sphere rather than a singular isothermal sphere.
We present collections of optical photometry for a pre-main sequence star HBC 722. It showed large amplitude optical outburst (${\Delta}V=4.7$ mag) in 2010 and classified as a FU Orionis type object. We have been observing HBC 722 from 2011 April to 2013 May, using Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse (CQUEAN) attached to the 2.1 m Otto Struve telescope at the McDonald Observatory. Time-series monitoring data (minute-scale interval) were obtained in SDSS r, i and z bands to see short-scale behaviors as well as trace the long-term brightness changes after the eruption in 2010. Interestingly, it started to brighten from 2011 early summer and became brighter than the first outburst peak in our 2013 May observation. We expect that the recovering phase would result from re-increase of disk accretion rate, might attribute to distinctive short-scale color features. In this presentation, we report long- and short-timescale optical behaviors of HBC 722 in the post-outburst phase.
Results of an analysis of 11 nights of R-filter CCD photometry data of an intermediate polar MU Camelopardalis (MU Cam) obtained at the Korean 1.0 m telescope at Mt. Lemmon are reported. After checking the spin period with our data, $P_{spin}=0.^d01373801(59)$, we compiled the reported data of maxima timing and an O-C diagram analysis has been carried out to understand the spin period variation. A significant spin period variation was detected, and fitting the O-C points to a cubic parabola led to an ephemeris of $BJD_{max}=2453682.4178(94)+0.0137380(13)E-2.07(55){\times}10^{-11}E^2+2.28(52){\times}10^{-15}E^3$. The torque experienced by the magnetic compact star accreting in a disk is estimated as ${\tau}{\approx}1.815{\times}10^{35}gcm^2/s^2$ in a simple approximation in order to show how important monitoring the period variation is. Thus we conclude that monitoring the long-term spin period variation will help to understand the physical condition of magnetic compact stars.
We have reviewed the magnetic activity in close binaries. Solar like magnetic activity indicators such as photometric spots, chromo spheric emission, coronal X-ray and radio emission, and flare activity are commonplace in many cool stars with convective envelopes. Using the UV spectra we confirmed the strength of stellar activity increases with more rapid rotation and later spectral types which corresponds to the increasing depth of the star's convective envelope. Apart from very young stellar objects such as T Tauri stars, the stars with the highest levels of activity are close binary systems composed of cool stars, i.e., the chromospherically active binaries such as RS CVn, BY Dra, W UMa and related systems. The IUE low and high dispersion spectra of V711 Tau, VW Cep and SW Lac are used for ultraviolet photometry and for a variation study of chromospheric activity. Evidence of chromospherically activity is indicated by the intensity variation of the Mg II emission line with orbital phase.
Flare and rotational variabilities induced by stellar activity are important for studying the effect of magnetic fields on the evolution of red dwarf stars. The level and frequency of magnetic activity in these stars have a different aspect at every moment of the observations due to the effect of age-rotation relation. The use of both tracers is thus essential to have a relatively homogeneous set of stellar activity data for statistical studies. The archival light curves and imaging data of the open cluster M37 taken by MMT 6.5m telescope were used for this work. In order to achieve much more accurate photometric precisions and also to make the most efficient use of the data, the entire imaging database were re-analyzed with our new time-series photometry technique and carefully calibration procedures. Based on the new light curves, we study, for the first time, a variety of aspects of those two variabilities in red dwarfs and their relation to magnetic activity. In this talk, we present all observational evidences that support the idea that the strength of magnetic activity is closely connected with the rotation rate of a star and its evolutionary status (age-activity-rotation paradigm). In conclusion, we suggest future directions to improve our understanding of stellar activity in cool stars with photometric time-series data.

We have analyzed H and $K_s$-band images of the Arches cluster obtained using the NIRC2 instrument on Keck with the laser guide star adaptive optics (LGS AO) system. With the help of the LGS AO system, we were able to obtain the deepest ever photometry for this cluster and its neighborhood, and derive the background-subtracted present-day mass function (PDMF) down to $1.3M_{\bigodot}$ for the 5"-9" annulus of the cluster. We find that the previously reported turnover at $6M_{\bigodot}$ is simply due to a local bump in the mass function (MF), and that the MF continues to increase down to our 50 % completeness limit ($1.3M_{\bigodot}$) with a power-law exponent of ${\Gamma}$ = -0.91 for the mass range of 1.3 < M/$M_{\bigodot}$ < 50. Our numerical calculations for the evolution of the Arches cluster show that the ${\Gamma}$ values for our annulus increase by 0.1-0.2 during the lifetime of the cluster, and thus suggest that the Arches cluster initially had ${\Gamma}$ of $-1.0{\sim}-1.1$, which is only slightly shallower than the Salpeter value.
We developed an algorithm to identify and determine periods of variable sources. With its robustness and high speed, it is expected to become an useful tool for surveys with large volume of data. This new scheme consists of an initial coarse. process of finding several candidate periods followed by a secondary process of much finer period search. With this multi-step approach, best candidates among statistically possible periods are produced without human supervision and also without any prior assumption on the nature of the variable star in question. We tested our algorithm with 381 stars taken from the ASAS survey and the result is encouraging. In about $76\%$ cases, our results are nearly identical as their published periods. Our algorithm failed to provide convincing periods for only about $10\%$ cases. For the remaining $14\%$, our results significantly differ from their periods. We show that, in many of these cases, our periods are superior and much closer to the true periods. However, the existence of failures, and also periods sometimes worse than manually controlled results, indicates that this algorithm needs further improvement. Nevertheless, the present experiment shows that this is a positive step toward a fully automated period analysis for future variability surveys.
Blue straggler stars (BSs) are "rejuvenated" main sequence stars first recognized by Allan Sandage from his observation of the prominent northern globular cluster M3 in the year of 1953. BSs are now known to be present in diverse stellar environments including open clusters, globular clusters, dwarf galaxies, and even the field populations of the Milky Way. This makes them a very useful tool in a wide range of astrophysical applications: Particularly BSs are considered to have a crucial role in the evolution of stellar clusters because they affect on the dynamics, the binary population, and the history of the stellar evolution of the cluster they belong to. Here we report a part of the preliminary results from our ongoing research on the BSs in the two metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), Hodge 11 and NGC1466. Using the high precision multi-band images obtained with the Advanced Camera for Survey (ACS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we extract time-series photometry to search for the signal of periodic variations in the luminosity of the BSs. Our preliminary results confirm that several BSs are intrinsic "short period (0.05 < P < 0.25 days)" variable stars with either pulsating or eclipsing types. We will discuss our investigation on the properties of those variable BS candidates in the context of the formation channels of these exotic main sequence stars, and their roles in the dynamical evolution of the host star clusters.
Black hole binary candidates are known to be composed of a black hole with 10 $M_{\odot}$ and a K or M type companion. Because the companion is believed to fill the Roche lobe that is very aspherical, the light curves of black hole binaries are characterized by an ellipsoidal variation. It has been known that the ellipsoidal light curves exhibit asymmetric maximum brightness at the orbital phases 0.25 and 0.75, which has been attributed to star spots or the hot impact points of the accretion flow on to the accretion disk around the black hole. In this paper, it is pointed out that the special relativistic beaming effect contributes to the asymmetry of several percent often observed in the light curves. The typical orbital velocity 400 km $s^{-1}$ observed in black hole binaries may induce the temperature difference $\DeltaT/T$ ~ 1/400 of the late type companion star in the observer`s rest frame, because of the special relativistic Doppler beaming effect. This difference in temperature can result in several per cent of brightness sensitively dependent on the wavelength band, which is comparable to what has been observed in most black hole binary candidates. Considering the significant contribution of the special relativistic Doppler beaming effect, we conclude that the estimation of the sizes and temperatures of the star spots or the hot impact point needs serious revision.
The variations of the dynamical substructures of NGC 6934 have been investigated by means of performing point spread function stellar photometry and the surface photometry on BV CCD images of NGC 6934. Our results show that overall variations of ellipticity and position angle range in $0.02{\sim}0.08\;and\;-90^{\circ}{\sim}+90^{\circ}$, respectively out to three times the half light radius. The inner ($r_{eff}) substructures of NGC 6934 inferred from the variations of ellipticity and position angle are mainly affected by the bright red giant populations, while the effects of the other giant populations are weaker than those of the bright red giant populations. Horizontal branch populations and faint red giant star populations affect the dynamical substructures of NGC 6934 in the region of $r_h.
