  • Development of bolometer array and camera at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths plays an important role for detecting submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) which appear to be very bright at the submillimeter and millimeter wavelengths. These SMGs, luminous infrared galaxies detected at mm/submm wavelengths seem to be progenitors of present-day massive galaxies and account for their considerable contributions to the light from the early universe and their expected high star formation rates (SFRs) if there is a close link between the SMG phenomena and the star formation activities and the interstellar dust in galaxies is mainly heated by the star light. In this talk, we review assembly of SMGs compiled with observations using the bolometer arrays and cameras and investigate their spectral energy distribution fits including the data at other wavelengths which trace the photometric properties and the red-shift distribution of galaxies. We find that these bright SMGs significantly contribute to the cosmic star formation rate density at red-shifts of 2-3 (about 8 %) for the spatial distribution of these galaxies.

  • Constraining physical (or stellar population) properties - such as stellar mass, star-formation rate, stellar population age, and dust-extinction - of galaxies from observation is crucial in the study of galaxy evolution. This is very challenging especially for high-redshift galaxies, and a widely-used method to estimate physical properties of high-redshift galaxies is to compare their photometric spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to spectral templates from stellar population synthesis models. I will show that the SED-fitting results of high-redshift galaxies are strongly dependent on the assumed forms of star-formation histories. I will also present the results of SED-fitting analysis of observed Lyman-break galaxies which show that parametric models with gradually increasing star-formation histories provide better estimates of physical parameters of high-redshift (z>3) star-forming galaxies than traditionally-used exponentially declining star-formation histories. This result is also consistent with the predictions from the modern galaxy formation models.

  • This study presents the global star formation efficiency (SFE) of 272 local star-forming galaxies based on the HI gas mass, stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), and morphology. The SFE increases as the stellar mass increases while the specific SFR decreases. The SFE is enhanced for galaxies with large H$\acute{a}$ equivalent widths, which is primarily due to the large SFR, not due to the large available amount of gas. The SFE is also enhanced by a factor of ~2 for merging systems compared to the normal spirals, showing that the merger-induced high pressure and density environment are crucial for the active star formation. Based on the SFR scaling relation, I present a SFR calibration formula using the HI gas mass.

  • In the hierarchical universe, galaxy merger is predicted to be frequent, and thus it is an important element for understanding galaxy evolution. In particular, star formation is greatly enhanced during the merger. The aim of this study is to understand the position and rate change of star formation caused by equal-mass edge-on mergers. We use the GADGET2- N-body/SPH code, and fully consider gas cooling, star formation, and supernova feedback. We show the star formation rate (SFR), and the magnitude and color evolution of the merger remnants for 18 different configurations varying orbit elements and inclinations of host galaxies against orbit planes. Then we construct the mock images of the remnants and investigate on how equal-mass galaxy merger affects the SFR and color/magnitude evolution while considering dust reddening. We conclude that over 90% mass of SF in equal-mass merger is in the central region. SF in tidal feature involves a small fraction of new stars and thus is difficult to detect unless deep imaging is performed. Around 55 ${\pm}$ 5 percent of gas turns into stars until the final coalescence which typically corresponds to 0.8, 1.2, and 2.5 Gyr for direct, parabolic, and elliptical orbit, respectively. This result is roughly consistent with Cox et al. 2000. We plan to implement this result into semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. Caveats and future work on merging conditions are discussed.

  • processes at the origin of the star formation in the galaxies over the last 10 billions years. While it was proposed in the past that merging of galaxies has a dominant role to explain the triggering of the star formation in the distant galaxies having high star formation rates. In the opposite, more recent studies revealed scaling laws linking the star formation rate in the galaxies to their stellar mass or their gas mass. The small dispersion of these laws seems to be in contradiction with the idea of powerful stochastic events due to interactions, but rather in agreement with the new vision of galaxy history where the latter are continuously fed by intergalactic gas. I was especially interested in one of this scaling law, the relation between the star formation (SFR) and the stellar mass (M*) of galaxies, commonly called the main sequence of star forming galaxies. I have studied this main sequence, SFR-M*, in function of the morphology and other physical parameters as the radius, the colour, the clumpiness. The goal was to understand the origin of the sequence's dispersion related to the physical processes underlying this sequence in order to identify the main mode of star formation controlling this sequence. This work needed a multi-wavelength approach as well as the use of galaxies profile simulation to distinguish between the different galaxy morphological types implied in the main sequence.

  • The central regions of barred-spiral galaxies contain interesting gaseous structures such as dust lanes located at the leading side of the bar and nuclear rings that are sites of intense star formation. Our previous studies showed how gas structures form under the influence of a non-axisymmetric bar potential and temporal/spatial behavior of the star formation in nuclear rings. However, previous works were limited to 2-dimensional infinitesimally-thin, unmagnetized and isothermal disks. To study effects of cooling/heating, vertical motions of gas structures and magnetic field, we use Mesh-Free magneto-hydrodynamic simulation code GIZMO. We find that temporal variations of the star formation rates in the nuclear ring in the three-dimensional model are overall similar those in the previous two-dimensional results, although the former shows more violent small-scale fluctuations near the early primary peak. We will present our recent results about evolution of gaseous structures and star formation rate compare with results of previous studies.

  • The cosmological constant is accountable for the accelerated expansion of our Universe. Observational data have provided a tight constraint on the cosmic star formation history from z = 8 to the present. What happens to the star formation rate beyond z=0? I will discuss the star formation rates, along with the properties of the intergalactic mediumfrom our suite of simulations into the future. Since Lambda becomes dominant in the future of our universe, I further simulate counter-factual universes to assign anthropic weights to each universe within the multiverse setting. I will argue that using the asymptotic star formation efficiency as weights, we almost double previous estimates of observers living in universes similar to ours. The expected value of the energy density of Lambda is also closer to the observed value. I will also discuss potential future works to improve the applicability of the anthropic reasoning of the cosmological constant.

  • We present the physical properties of star forming regions in IC 10 obtained from Korea VLBI Network (KVN) 22GHz, the Submillimeter Array (SMA) CO, Very Large Array (VLA) HI 21cm, optical (U, B, V and H-alpha), and Spitzer infrared observations. IC 10 is a nearby (~0.7Mpc) irregular blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy which is likely to be experiencing an intense and recent burst of star formation. This nearby infant system showing high star formation rate but low metallicity (<20% of that of the Sun) provides critical environment of interstellar medium (ISM) under which current galactic star formation models are challenged. To make quantitative analysis of the ISM in the galaxy, we apply 2D cross-correlation technique to the multi-wavelength data for the first time. By cross-correlating different tracers of star formation, dust and gas phases in IC 10 in a two dimensional way, we discuss the gas properties and star formation history of the galaxy.

  • Hierarchical galaxy formation models under LCDM cosmology predict that the most massive structures such as galaxy clusters (M > $10^{14}M_{\odot}$) appear late (z < 1) in the history of the universe through hierarchical clustering of small objects. Galaxy formation is also expected to be accelerated in overdense environments, with the star formation rate-density relation to be established at z ~ 2. In this talk, we present our search of massive structures of galaxies at 0.7 < z < 4, using the data from GOODS survey and our own imaging survey, Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS). From these studies, we find that there are excess of massive structures of galaxies at z > 2 in comparison to the Millennium simulation data. At 1 < z < 2, the number density of massive structures is consistent with the simulation data, but the star formation history is more or less identical between field and cluster. The star formation quenching process is dominated by internal process (stellar mass). The environmental effect becomes important only at z < 1, which contributes to create the well known star formation-density relation in the local universe. Our results suggest that galaxy formation models under LCDM cosmology may require further refinements to match the observation.
