Objective: Rhus verniciflua Stokes (RVS) has anticancer effect confirmed by preclinical studies and historical records. We thus tried to evaluate retrospectively the effect of RVS as a complementary medicine for patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) showing refractory to conventional chemotherapy. Patients and Methods: From June 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007, patients with advanced NSCLC who received both the standardized RVS extract and a standard course of second or more line therapy such as pemetrexed ($Alimta^{(R)}$), erlotinib ($Tarceva^{(R)}$), and gefitinib ($Iressa^{(R)}$) were checked. A total of 13 patients were eligible for the final analysis after fulfilling inclusion/exclusion criteria. Time to progression (TTP) of these patients treated with the standardized RVS extract was checked in the aftercare period. Results: Patients received RVS treatment for a median period of 296 (range 84-698) days. The median TTP was 220.5 (range 36-489) days, and three patients (23.1%) had TTP values of 15 more months. No significant side effects from RVS treatment have been observed. Conclusion: The standardized RVS extract might have synergetic effects by assisting apoptosis in advanced NSCLC with concurrent standard therapy agents, since it prolonged TTP without significant adverse effects. This study suggests that the standardized RVS extract is beneficial to patients with chemotherapy-refractory NSCLC. Further clinical trials and preclinical studies are necessary to determine the efficacy and safety of the standardized RVS extract in NSCLC.
Background: The purpose of this study was to redefine the location of acupoints in the lower abdomen by taking actual thoracic and abdominal measurements. Methods: Measurements of the length and height of the thorax, and both the upper and lower abdominal area were compared to standard values defined by the World Health Organization Western Pacific Region (WHO/WPRO), and medical text books such as Miraculous Pivot, and A-B Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. These measurements were used to redefine the standard of 1 cun, and the cun value of the lower abdomen. Results: Of the 60 studies screened, all studies used the cun measurement system. Considerable variation in the localization of acupoints in the lower abdominal area were detected. The average measurement of a typical male lower abdomen was within 6.33 cun to 6.34 cun. From this data, 6.5 cun appears to be more accurate than the current standardized length of 5 cun. The standardized index values of the width of the 4 fingers, and the distance from the lateral prominence from the greater trochanter to the popliteal crease (Fm), appeared to apply to only males, as defined by the WHO/WPRO. Conclusion: Further studies on standardizing the index measurements for the lower abdominal area are necessary. For males, the more accurate standardized length of the lower abdomen was 6.5 cun, whereas for females, the measurement would typically be longer than 6.5 cun.
This research examined the quality characteristics of orange sauce samples prepared with different sugar contents in order to create a standardized recipe. In the foodservice industry, attempts have been made to make superior sauces, often resulting in error. In this study, different sugar contents were examined for orange sauce to determine why varied results occur during its preparation as well as the best methodology for preparing orange sauce. Quality characteristics such as color differences, spreadability, and pH were analyzed, as well as sensory evaluations of taste, texture, color and overall acceptability. The pH values of the orange sauce samples ranged from 3.6 to 3.63 and after the initial simmering of ingredients, the weight reduction rates of the sauces were 88, 75, 64, 63, and 64% for sugar contents of 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 g respectively. Hunter's color L, a, and b values of the samples changed according to the sugar contents after simmering (1st sauce). The L and b values showed similar patterns, where increasing sugar content resulted in higher values; however, in the 2nd sauce, the pattern was reversed. This indicates that the color of the sauce was affected by sugar caramelization during the reduction process; however, the final color was modified by the additions of mayonnaise and butter as well as by aeration. In the sensory evaluation the sample containing 30% sugar (500 g) had significantly higher acceptability scores (p<0.05) for color, mouth feel, appearance, taste, and overall acceptability. Finally, the optimal ingredient ratios of the standardized orange sauce recipe were determine as: 48% total liquid consisting of orange juice and mandarin and orange fruit; 30% sugar; 10% mayonnaise and 11% butter.

Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the level of agreement between a standardized patient (SP) and a faculty member in the evaluation of nursing students' assessment and communication skills. Methods: Participants were 51 third year nursing students in a simulation practice of 'nursing care for a patient admitted with chest pain'. Using a 30-item checklist and a 16-item communication tool, a SP and faculty member evaluated the students' assessment and communication skills during the simulation. Results: The average values for percent agreement and kappa statistic for nursing assessment between the two evaluators were 85.3% and .48 respectively. Twenty of thirty items evaluating assessment skill had above moderate agreement (${\geq}.41$) by kappa between the evaluators. Seven of sixteen items evaluating communication and interpersonal skills showed above fair agreement (${\geq}.40$) between the two evaluators, which was measured by intraclass correlation coefficient. Conclusion: The findings show that the evaluation of the SP was consistent with those of the faculty member to a moderate degree. Clear guidelines for evaluating criteria and optimal time and effort for SP training are necessary to increase the reliability of standardized patients as evaluators in simulation-based nursing education.
In the image acquisition tests of image sensors and modules, how to compare pixel values, how to digitize "defect", and how to determine "fault" are extremely varied from test equipments. Therefore, setup of test equipments for image acquisition characteristics should be customized for target devices under test. In general, test procedures are delivered as technical documents in not standardized but arbitrary formats. So test equipment should be manually programmed fitting individual setup condition. This costs huge time and effort and has high risk of human error. In this paper, the standardized description method is proposed to apply to almost all existing tests where various tests are described in a single framework.
Based on surface energy balance climatology, surface temperatures should respond to drying conditions well before plant response. To test this hypothesis, land surface temperatures (LST) derived from MODIS data were analyzed to determine how the data were correlated with climatic water balance variables and NDVI anomalies during a growing season in Western and Central Kansas. Daily MODIS data were integrated into weekly composites so that each composite data set included the maximum temperature recorded at each pixel during each composite period. Time-integrated, or cumulative values of the LST deviation standardized with mean air temperatures had significantly high correlation coefficients with SM, AE/PE, and MD/PE, ranging from 0.65 to 0.89. The Standardized Thermal Index (STI) is proposed in this study to accomplish the objective. The STI, based on surface temperatures standardized with observed mean air temperatures, had significant temporal relationships with the hydroclimatological factors. STI classes in all the composite periods also had a strong correlation with NDVI declines during a drought episode. Results showed that, based on LST, air temperature observations, and water budget analysis, NDVI declines below normal could be predicted as early as 8 weeks in advance in this study area.

The way to develop an IoT device is to mount the sensor required by the application on a platform such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi, and write the sensor driver and application. At this time, if the driving driver for the sensor has already been written and the application can access the driver as a standardized API, then Plug&Play of the sensor will be possible. The old way to do this is because the sensor interface is too complicated to use on the current platform. In this paper, when a standardized sensor and driver with a USB terminal are plugged into the Raspberry Pi, we propose a method for automatically installing the driver. Application developers can get sensor values through Linux's file access API without worrying about sensor drivers. The proposed technique is currently being implemented on Raspberry-Pi.
In order to standardize the ${\sigma}^*,\;{\rho}^*$ is taken as unity for the benzoic acids by analogy with the fact that ${\rho}$ of benzoic acids in the ground state is taken as unity. The $pK_{\alpha}^*$ of many benzoic acid derivatives are determined by UV spectroscopy and fluorescence spectral analysis whenever possible. The ${\sigma}^*$ constants are derived from the Hammett equation utilizing these $pK_{\alpha}^*$ values and the $pK_{\alpha}^*$ of the benozic acid derivatives showed better correlationship with ${\sigma}^*$ than ${\sigma},\;{\sigma}^+\;and\;{\sigma}^-$ as expected. From these ${\sigma}^*$ values, ${\rho}^*$ of the phenol derivatives was calculated to be 1.28. The new standardized ${\sigma}^*$ values are calculated from the $pK_{\alpha}^*$ values of phenols since more accurate and abundant data are available for phenols than the benzoic acid derivatives.
In this thesis we concerned with the degree of similarity in pairs of scores having a common mean and variance could express similarity in terms of the absolute difference between the standardized scores. We particulary discussed the distribution of absolute differences between pairs of T scores among many standardized scores and demonstrated the procedures for calculating the lower limit of Med(│d│) values i. e. the maximum possible similarity with medians and correlation coefficients of the equivalent form tests by using the folded normal distribution, although other researchers expressed the degree of similarity using only the standard normal distribution. We also described many cases how to use those techniques and to apply effectively them in real evaluation fields.
