A model engine having a flat cylinder head and a piston face and an off-center intake valve is investigated in this analysis. Calculation domain is confined to the half of the cylinder with swirl free inlet velocity condition. Due to the absence of measured inlet conditions, the inlet flowrates during induction period are calculated from overall mass and energy conservation requirements. Finite difference equation for velocity and pressure were solved by modified SIMPLER algorithm, standard k-$\varepsilon$turbulence model and hybrid scheme. From the result of prediction, dimensionless velocity distribution and turbulence intensities are investigated at each crank angle.
A numerical investigation was performed to determine the effect of a Gurney flap on a NACA 23012 airfoil. A Navier-Stokes code, RAMPANT, was used to calculate the flow field about airfoil. The fully turbulent results were obtained using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ two-equation turbulence model. To provide a check case for our computational method, computations were performed for NACA 4412 airfoil which compared with Wedcock's experimental data. Gurney flap sizes of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2% of the airfoil chord were studied. The numerical solutions showed the Gurney flap increased both lift and drag. These results suggested that the Gurney flap served to increased the effective camber of the airfoil. But Gurney flap provided a significant increase in lift-to-drag ratio relatively at low angle of attack and for high lift coefficient. Also, it turned out that 0.5% chord size of flap was best one among them.

Modeling swirling wakes is of considerable interest to wind farm designers. The present work is an attempt to develop a computational tool to understand free, far-wake development behind a single rotating wind turbine. Besides the standard momentum and continuity equations from the boundary layer theory in two dimensions, an additional equation for the conservation of angular momentum is introduced to study axisymmetric swirl effects on wake growth. Turbulence is simulated with two options: the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model and the Reynolds Stress transport model. A finite volume method is used to discretize the governing equations for mean flow and turbulence quantities. A marching algorithm of expanding grids is employed to enclose the growing far-wake and to solve the equations implicitly at every axial step. Axisymmetric far-wakes with/without swirl are studied at different Reynolds numbers and swirl numbers. Wake characteristics such as wake width, half radius, velocity profiles and pressure profiles are computed. Compared with the results obtained under similar flow conditions using the computational software, FLUENT, this far-wake model shows simplicity with acceptable accuracy, covering large wake regions in far-wake study.

This research focuses on simulation and visualization of flow field characteristics inside a centrifugal pump. The 3D numerical analysis was carried out by using a numerical CFD tool, addressing a Reynolds Average Navier-Stock code with a standard k-${\varepsilon}$ two-equation turbulence model. The simulation accounts for friction head loss due to rough walls at suction, impeller, discharge areas and volumetric head loss at impeller wear ring. A comparison of performance curves between simulation and experimentation is included, and it reveals a same trend of those results with a small difference of maximum 5 %. At best efficiency point, velocity vectors are smooth but it changes significantly under off-design point, a strong recirculation appears at the outlet of impeller passages near tongue area. A relatively uniform preassure distribution was observed around the impeller in despite of the tongue. Within the volute, because of its geometry, spiral vortexes formed, proving that the flow field in this region was relatively turbulent and unsteady.
The objective of this study is to provide the quantitative and qualitative computational data about the aerodynamic performance of Gurney flap on NACA 00XX airfoils and to show the optimum Gurney flap height for each airfoil. The test was performed on 7 different airfoils from NACA 0006 to NACA0024, which have a 3% chord(=c) thickness interval. For every NACA 00XX airfoil, Gurney flap heights were changed by 0.5% or 0.25% chord interval from 0 to 2.0%c to study their effects. The aerodynamic characteristics of clean and Gurney flap airfoil were compared, and the influences of Gurney flap on each airfoil were compared. As a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) solver, FLUENT, based on Navier-Stokes code, was used to calculate the flow field around the airfoil. The fully-turbulent results were obtained using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ two-equation turbulence model. The test results showed that Gurney flap increased the lift coefficient much more than the drag coefficient over a certain range of the lift coefficient, so the lift-to-drag ratio, which is the important index of airfoil performance, was increased. Based on the test results, the relationship between the airfoil thickness and the optimum Gurney flap heights was suggested.
A numerical investigation was performed to determine the effect of airfoil thickness on the optimum Gurney flap height using NACA 00XX series airfoils. Seven airfoils which have 3% chord thickness difference were used. These were NACA 0006, 0009, 0012, 0015, 0018, 0021, and 0024. A Navier-Stokes code, FLUENT, was used to calculate the flow field about airfoil. The fully turbulent results were obtained using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ two-equation turbulence model. To provide a check case fur our computational method, numerical studies for NACA 4412 airfoil were made and compared with already existing experimental data for this airfoil by Wadcock. For every NACA 00XX airfoil, Gurney flap heights ranging from 0.5% to 2.0% chord were changed by 0.5% chord interval and their effects were studied. With the numerical solutions, the relationship between $(L/D)_{max}$ and airfoil thickness as a function of flap height and the relationship between $(L/D)_{max}$ and flap height as a function of airfoil thickness were investigated. The same relationship for $(C_l)_{max}$ also were shown. From these results, the optimum flap size for each airfoil thickness can be determined and vice versa.
The natural convection and combined heat transfer induced by fire in a rectangular enclosure is numerically studied. The model for this numerical analysis is partially opened, it is divided by a vertical baffle projecting from ceiling. The solution procedure Includes the standard k- $\varepsilon$ model for turbulent flow and the discrete ordinates method (DOM ) is used for the calculation of radiative heat transfer equation. In this study, numerical simulation on the combined naturnal convection and radiation is carried out in a partial enclosure filled with absorbed-emitted gray media, but is not considered scattering problem. The velocity vectors, streamlines, and isothermal lines are compared the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer. Comparing the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer analysis shows the stronger circulation than those of the pure convection. Three different locations of heat source are considered to observe the effect of heat source location on the heat transfer phenomena. As the results, the circulation and the heat transfer In the left region from heating block are much more influenced than those in the right region. It is also founded that the radiation effect cannot be neglected in analyzing the building in fire.
Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is a solid-liquid separation process that uses fine rising bubbles to remove particles in water. Most of particle-bubble collision occurs in the DAF contact zone. This initial contact considered by the researchers to play a important role for DAF performance. It is hard to make up conceptual model through simple mass balance for estimating collision efficiency in the contact zone because coupled behavior of the solid-liquid-gas phase in DAF system is 90 complicate. In this study, 2-phase(gas-liquid) flow equations for the conservation of mass, momentum and turbulence quantities were solved using an Eulerian-Eulerian approach based on the assumption that very small particle is applied in the DAF system. For the modeling of turbulent 2-phase flow in the reactor, the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ mode I(liquid phase) and zero-equation(gas phase) were used in CFD code because it is widely accepted and the coefficients for the model are well established. Particle-bubble collision efficiency was calculated using predicted turbulent energy dissipation rate and gas volume fraction. As the result of this study, the authors concluded that bubble size and recycle ratio play important role for flow pattern change in the reactor. Predicted collision efficiency using CFD showed good agreement with measured removal efficiency in the contact zone. Also, simulation results indicated that collision efficiency at 15% recycle ratio is higher than that of 10% and showed increasing tendency of the collision efficiency according to the decrease of the bubble size.

In order to study the effect of the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) on the simulation results, the external characteristics and internal flow features of a diffuser pump were analyzed with a two-way flow solid coupling method. And the static and dynamic structure analysis of the blade was also caculated with the FEA method. The steady flow field is based on Reynolds Averaged N-S equations with standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model, the unsteady flow field is based on the large eddy simulation, and the structure response is based on elastic transient structural dynamic equation. The results showed that the effect of FSI on the head prediction based on CFD really exists. At the same radius, the van mises stress on the nodes closed shroud and hub was larger than other nodes. A large deformation region existed near inlet side at the middle of blades. The strength of impeller satisfied the strength requirement with static stress analysis based on the fourth strength theory. The dynamic stress varied periodically with the impeller rotating. It was also found that the fundamental frequency of the dynamic stress is the rotating frequency and its harmonic frequency. The frequency of maximum stress amplitude at node 1626 was 7 times of the rotating frequency. The frequency of maximum stress amplitude at node 2328 was 14 times of the rotating frequency. No matter strength failure or fatigue failure, the root of blades near shroud is the key region to analyse.
A series of parametric investigations are performed in order to resolve the flow characteristic of a Quebec city stoker incinerator. The parameters considered in this study are five internal configurations of the Quebec city stoker itself and its modified ones, primary air velocity, the injection velocity and angle of the secondary air, and the reduction of the stoker exit area. A control-volume based finite-difference method by Patankar together with the power-law scheme is employed for discretization. The resolution of the pressure-velocity coupling is made by the use of SIMPLEC algorithm. The standard, two equation, k-$\varepsilon$ model is incorporated for the closure of turbulence. The size of recirculation region, turbulent viscosity, the mass fraction of the secondary air and pressure drop are calculated in order to analyze the characteristics of flow field. The results are physically acceptable and discussed in detail. The flow field of the Quebec city stoker shows the strong recirculation zone together with the high turbulence intensity over the upper part of the incinerator.
