  • Since stainless steel plates have good mechanical properties, weldability, appearance and resistance of corrosion, these are traditionally used for vehicles such as the bus and the train. And they are mainly fabricated by spot welding. But fatigue strength of their spot welded joint is considerably influenced by welding conditions as well as geometrical factors. Thus a reasonable and systematic criterion for long life design of spot welded body structure must be established. In this report, strain energy density was analyzed by using 3-dimensional finite element model about the IB-type spot welded lap joint under tension-shear load. Fatigue tests were conducted on them having various thickness, joint angle, lapped length and width. From their results, it was found that fatigue strength of the IB-type spot welded lap joints could be effectively and systematically rearranged by strain energy density at the edge of nugget.

Tensile and impact toughness properties of various regions of dissimilar joints of nuclear grade steels

  • Modified 9Cr-1Mo ferritic steel is a preferred material for steam generators in nuclear power plants for their creep strength and good corrosion resistance. Austenitic stainless steels, such as type 316LN, are used in the high temperature segments such as reactor pressure vessels and primary piping systems. So, the dissimilar joints between these materials are inevitable. In this investigation, dissimilar joints were fabricated by the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process with Inconel 82/182 filler metals. The notch tensile properties and Charpy V-notch impact toughness properties of various regions of dissimilar metal weld joints (DMWJs) were evaluated as per the standards. The microhardness distribution across the DMWJs was recorded. Microstructural features of different regions were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Inhomogeneous notch tensile properties were observed across the DMWJs. Impact toughness values of various regions of the DMWJs were slightly higher than the prescribed value. Formation of a carbon-enriched hard zone at the interface between the ferritic steel and the buttering material enhanced the notch tensile properties of the heat-affected-zone (HAZ) of P91. The complex microstructure developed at the interfaces of the DMWJs was the reason for inhomogeneous mechanical properties.

  • The effect of heat treatment on the fatigue crack growth behavior in welded joints between the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of SA 508 Cl.3 low-alloy steel and HAZ of AISI 316L stainless steel is investigated. When the crack propagates across SA 508 Cl.3 or AISI 316L SS and HAZ into the weldment, the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) in the HAZ region does not change or decrease despite the increase in stress intensity factor ${\Delta}K$. The residual stress at the HAZ region is more compressive than that at the base Δ materials and weldment. The effect of the welding residual stress on the crack growth behavior is determined by performing a residual stress relief heat treatment at $650^{\circ}C$ for 1h and subsequent furnace cooling. The FCG behavior in the HAZ region in the as-welded specimen and the residual stress relief heat-treated specimen is discussed in terms of the welding residual stress.

  • Stainless steel sheets are commonly used for vehicles such as the bus and the train. These are mainly fabricated by spot-welding. Especially, it is influenced by welding conditions as well as geometrical factors of spot welded joint. Therefore, it is not too much to say that structural rigidity and strength of spot-welded structures is decided by fatigue strength of spot welded lap joint. Thus, it is necessary to establish a reasonable and systematic long life design criterion for the spot-welded structure. In this study, numerical stress analysis was performed by using 3-dimensional finite element model on IB-type spot-welded lap joint of 304 stainless steel sheet under tension-shear load. Fatigue tests were also conducted on them having various thickness, joint angle, lapped length, and width of the plate. From the results, it was found that fatigue strength of IB-type spot-welded lap joints was influenced by its geometrical factors, however, could be systematically rearranged by maximum principal stress ({TEX}$σ_{1max}${/TEX}) at the nugget edge of the spot-welding point.

  • Stainless steel sheets are widely used as the structure material for the railroad cars and the commercial vehicles. These kinds structures used stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by using the gas welding. Gas welding is very important and useful technology in fabrication of an railroad car and vehicles structure. However fatigue strength of the gas welded joints is considerably lower than parent metal due to stress concentration at the weldment, fatigue strength evaluation of gas welded joints are very important to evaluate the reliability and durability of railroad cars and to establish a criterion of long life fatigue design. In this paper, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curve were obtained by fatigue tests. Using these results, the accelerated life test (ALT) is conducted. From the experimental results, an acceleration model is derived and acceleration factors are estimated. So it is intended to obtain the useful information for the fatigue lifetime of plug and ring gas welded joints and data analysis by statistic reliability method, to save time and cost, and to develop optimum accelerated life prediction plans.

  • 본 연구에서는 위의 두번째 연구동향과 맥락을 같이하는 것으로서 스테인리스 강(SUS304)에 대한 진공브레이징 연구 및 탄소강의 진공 브레이징에 대한 연구결과들 을 토대로 하여 SUS304와 탄소강과의 진공브레이징 현상을 연구하였는데 특히 모재의 탄소함유량, 브레이징시간 및 접합부 틈새(joint clearance)등에 따라 접합부에 나타 나는 여러 금속학적 현상의 규명 및 접합강도(joint strength)에 대해 변수들이 미치 는 영향을 연구 하였다.
