A newly designed combustion chamber of diesel engine with a modified piston crown was prepared for the purpose of investigation for reduction of NO emission. It was intended to realize 2-stage combustion that is to keep fuel rich condition during early stage of combustion and fuel lean condition during next stage. The engine was tested on various conditions concerning exhaust gas emissions especially about NO emission and simultaneously fuel consumption rate. It was found that the engine with 2-stage combustion type piston emits significantly low NO at various speed and torque compared with conventional engines, but it raised points at issue in CO and smoke emissions with fuel consumption rate. The increasing of injection pressure on 2 stage combustion type diesel engine affects on CO and smoke emission considerably to reduce but slightly on NO to increase. The effect of 2-stage combustion was better at low speed than at high speed.
Various measures have been tried to reduce the NOx emission from diesel engine, but with partial success because the mechanisms of NOx and PM formations appear to have trade-off relation between each other. Therefore it has been known to be difficult to reduce NOx emission and PM emission simultaneously. Two stage combustion method i,e. a combustion process which has rich combustion stage and lean combustion stage one by one, has been developed successfully to reduce NOx formation in the continuous combustion chambers such as in the boilers. But until yet it is not successful to apply the same method in intermittent combustion chamber like in the diesel engine cylinder, as it was, only several research works were carried out. In this study, devised was a uniquely shaped combustion chamber with reformed piston crown intended to keep fuel-rich condition during early stage of combustion and fuel-lean condition during next stage. It was found that the NOx emission decreased significantly at various conditions of operation with the two stage combustion type engines of PR20 type, but other values such as smoke, CO and specific fuel consumption deteriorated as usual.

“Flameless combustion” of lean to ultra lean mixtures, supported by high-temperature burned gas, can resolve the dilemma between complete combustion versus ultra-low NOx emissions in gas turbine combustors. The characteristics of NOx emissions and combustion in “lean-lean” two-stage combustion were investigated for fuel vapor and droplets / air mixture jets injected from the main injection tube that was placed perpendicular to the combustor wall into the primary hot burned gas prepared by combustion of lean mixtures on a perforated flame holder. The present results clearly show that the ultra-low NOx combustion supported by the reaction of lean mixtures well mixed with the hot burned gas from the primary stage is much more advantageous in achieving ultra-low NOx emissions while maintaining high combustion efficiency.

In gas turbines, excess air for combustion is available and therefore lean premixed combustion is the most promising approach to the significant reduction of thermal NOx emissions. At lean conditions, however, flame stability is inherently worse and hence combustion tends to be incomplete. Efforts have been devoted toward extending the operating range of complete combustion at leaner conditions. One of them is the lean-lean two-stage combustion where lean to ultra-lean secondary mixtures are mixed with the hot burned gas from the primary stage. Conventional flame combustion or flameless reaction are initiated depending on the conditions of the secondary zone. In the first part of the present study, the effects of fuel injection on the emissions and flame stability were investigated for a single tubular flame, In the second part, the emissions and flame stability were studied for a two-stage combustor with secondary mixture injected through the tangential slots on a cylindrical combustor wall. The effects of the ratio of air flow rates to the primary and secondary zones on the emissions and combustion characteristics were investigate.

Nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) are air pollutants which are generated from the combustion of fossil fuels. Stage combustion is an effective method to reduce $NO_x$ emissions. The effects of $NO_x$ reduction by stage combustion in a pilot scale combustor(6.6kW) have been investigated using propane gas flames laden with NH$_{3}$ as Fuel-N. The results in this study are follows; (1) $NO_x$ emissions are dependent on the reducing environment of fuel-rich zone regardless of total air ratio. The maximum $NO_x$ reduction is at the stoichiometric ratio of 0.8 to 0.9 in the reducing zone. (2) $NO_x$ reduction is maximum when burnout air is injected at the point where the oxygen in reducing zone is almost consumed. (3) $NO_x$ reduction is dependent upon the temperature of reducing zone with best effect above 950.deg. C in the reducing zone. (4) The fuel stage combustion is more effective to reduce $NO_x$ formation in the wide range of stoichiometric ratio than two stage combustion. (5) The results of this study could be utilized mainly in a design strategy for low $NO_x$ emission from the combustion of high fuel-nitrogen in energy sources ratio than as an indication of the absolute levels of $NO_x$ which can be achieved by stage combustion techniques in large scale facilities.
Computations were performed to investigate the effects of air staging on combustion in three stage heavy-oil fired combustion burner. The burner was designed for 3 MW. Different amounts of air are introduced into each 3 three stages by means of each dampers. The goal of the study is to understand combustion phenomena according to each air stage mass ratios through CFD. Air flow rates at three inlets are adjusted by dampers inside a burner. Here, injection conditions of liquid fuel are kept constant throughout all simulations. This assumption is made in order to limit the complexity of oil combustion though it may cause some disagreement. In case of cold flows, only longitudinal velocities arc considered, On the other hand, flow, temperature and NOx generations are taken into account for reactive flows. Simple parametric study was conducted by setting 1'st air stage mass ratio as a parameter. And an optimal operation condition was found. The computational study is based on k-e model, P-1 radiation model(WSGGM) and PDF, and is implemented on a commercial code, FLUENT.
HCCI engines have mainly focused on achieving low temperature combustion in order to obtain higher efficiency and lower emission. One of practical difficulties in HCCI combustion is to control the start of combustion and subsequent combustion phasing. The choice of primary reference fuels in HCCI strategy is one of various promising solutions to make HCCI combustion ignition-controlled. The behavior of ignition delay to the frequency variation of sinusoidal velocity oscillation is computationally investigated under HCCI conditions of PRF75 using a reduced chemistry in a counterflow configuration. The second-stage ignition is more delayed as the higher frequency is imposed on nozzle velocity fluctuation whereas the first-stage ignition is not much influenced.
The aim of this study is to investigate advantages that the catalytically supported combustor can have. For this purpose, the catalytic combustor was prepared which consisted of the catalyst bed and the thermal combustor at the downstream of the catalyst bed. The catalyst bed consisted of two-stage. Pd catalyst was installed in the first stage of the catalyst bed, and Pt catalyst was placed in the second stage. Results showed that the catalytically supported combustion had some advantages. One was that auto-ignition occurred in the thermal combustor. This can give merit that an igniter is not necessary to start flame ignition. Other was that the catalytically supported combustion was stable for lean mixture. When combustion of lean mixture was not supported by surface reaction it became unstable so that big combustion noise was created. Therefore, it is desirable to support flame by catalytic surface reaction to obtain the stable combustion of lean mixture.
Experimental study on combustion characteristics of a regenerative combustor has performed. High-temperature air combustion in the regenerative combustor is obtained through heat recovery from exhaust gas flow by porous ceramic materials and through alternation of air flow direction through the combustor. Temperature field, CO and NOx emission with respect to the frequency of alternation are measured. It is found that at initial stage of the alternation, temperature of inlet section of main combustion chamber is increased sharply since both high temperature air preheated by the ceramics and prompt fuel injection results in rapid combustion. Following this initial stage, combustion temperature is reduced as the preheated air temperature is reduced. However peak temperature in the chamber and exhaust gas temperature are decreased as the alternation period is reduced, increased temperature of ceramic is observed. CO and NOx emission with respect to the alternation period is also examined. It is found that there exists a range of optimum alternating period for CO and NOx emission characteristics.

As the environmental pollution becomes serious global problem, the regulation of emission exhausted from automobiles is strengthen. Therefore, it is very important to know how to reduce the NOx and PM simultaneously in diesel engines, which has lot of merits such as high thermal efficiency, low fuel consumption and durability. By this reason, the new concept called as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition(HCCI) engines are spotlighted because this concept reduced NOx and P.M. simultaneously. However, it is well known that HCCI engines increased HC and CO. Thus, the investigation of combustion characteristics which consists cool and hot flames for HCCI engines were needed to obtain the optimal combustion condition. In this study, combustion characteristics for direct inject type HCCI engine such as quantity of cool flame and hot flame, ignition timing and ignition delay were investigated to clarify the effects of these parameters on performance. The results revealed that diesel combustion showed the two-stage ignition of cool flame and hot flame, the rate of cool flame increase and hot flame decrease with increasing intake air temperature. On the other hand, the gasoline combustion is the single-stage ignition and ignition timing is near the TDC. In addition mixed fuel combustion showed different phenomenon, which depends on the ratio of gasoline component. Ignition timing of mixed fuel is retarded near the TDC and the ignition delay is increased according to ratio of gasoline.
