  • In this work, the effect of ozone treatment of montmorillonite (MMT) on the surface characteristics of montmorillonite and the thermal stability of MMT/polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites was investigated. The surface properties of MMT were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Also, the thermal stability of nanocomposites was investigated in thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As a result, it was found that the silicate interlayers of the organically modified MMT (D-MMT) were increased by about 11${\AA}$, as compared with the MMT. Also, FT-IR showed that a new peaks at $2800\~2900\;cm^{-1}$ appeared due to the $CH_2$ mode in the D-MMT The ozone treatment of the MMT led to an increase of SiO or $SiO_2$ groups on MMT surfaces, resulting in increasing the oxygen-containing functional groups on MMT. The ozonized MMT had higher thermal stability than that of untreated nanocomposites. This was due to the improvement of interfacial bonding strengths, resulting from the acid-base interfacial interactions between PP and MMT.

  • In this research, vibration reduction and aeroelastic stability of a composite hingeless rotor hub flexure with viscoelastic constrained layer damping treatment(CLDT) were investigated. The composite flexures with viscoelastic CLDT were applied to hingeless rotor system to improve the in-plane stability of the lead-lag motion causing resonance. The modal test was performed and dynamic properties(natural frequency and loss factor) were acquired. Also, complex eigenvalue analysis(SOLlO7) in the NASTRAN structural analysis module was performed and compared with results of the modal test. To insure aeroelastic stability, damping ratio analyses of the hingeless rotor system with CLDT were accomplished at hovering condition due to collective pitch angle changes. Satisfactory results of increasing structural damping and stability were obtained.

  • Influence of Zr addition on grain stability at elevated temperatures has been investigated for extruded pure Mg and Mg-0.25%Zr alloy. The grain size of pure Mg increases rapidly with increasing annealing temperature when isochronally annealed for 60 min from 573 to 773 K, whereas the grains are stable up to 723 K for the Zr-containing alloy. The activation energies for grain growth ($E_g$) at this temperature range were determined as 75.3 and 105.9 kJ/mole for the pure Mg and Mg-0.25%Zr alloy, respectively. TEM observations on the annealed Mg-Zr samples revealed that higher thermal stability and higher activation energy for grain growth resulting from Zr addition in Mg may well be associated with the restriction of grain growth by nano-sized Zr particles distributed in the microstructure.

  • The thermal stability and mechanical properties of Nephila clavata and Bassaniana decorata spider silks were measured and compared with those of aramid and polyester fibers. The thermal stability of the spider silk was lower than those of the commercial aramid and polyester fibers. However, the mechanical properties of the spider silk were far superior to that of the polyester fiber. The effect of the water content of the spider silk on its thermal stability and mechanical property was examined by conducting the silk to heat treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ under vacuum for various times. The results indicated that spider silk subjected to heat treatment for 1.5 hr had excellent thermal stability and mechanical property.

  • Hydrogen passivation enhances the electrical characteristics of poly-Si TFT(Thin Film Transistor). However, the weak Si-H bonds, generated during hydrogenation, degrade the stability of the device. So, we carried out the passivation treatment with $NH_3$ or $N_2$. We compared the effect of $NH_3$ or $N_2$ passivation treatments with that of hydrogenation in terms of stability. Through the $NH_3$ passivation treatment, we obtained the most improved subthreshold swing of 1.2V/decade from the initial subthreshold swing of 1.56V/decade. When electrical stress was given, the $NH_3$ passivated devices showed best electrical stability.

  • A common problem with fast-growing hardwoods is dimensional instability that limits use of their wood. In this study, we investigated the effects of pre-drying methods, temperatures, and heating duration on the specific gravity, water absorption, and dimensional stability of three tropical fast-growing hardwoods, jabon (Neolamarckia cadamba Roxb.), sengon (Falcataria moluccana Miq.), and mangium (Acacia mangium Willd.). Wood samples were pre-dried by two methods (fan and oven at $40^{\circ}C$), and heat treatments were performed at three temperatures (120, 150, and $180^{\circ}C$) for two different time periods (2 and 6 hours). The specific gravity, water absorption, dimensional stability, and structural changes of the samples were evaluated. The results revealed that heat treatments slightly reduced the specific gravity of all three wood species. In addition, the heat treatments reduced water absorption and significantly improved dimensional stability of the samples. Oven pre-drying followed by heat treatment at $180^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours resulted in good physical improvement of jabon and sengon wood. Fan pre-drying followed by heat treatment at $180^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours improved the physical properties of mangium wood. The heat treatment shows a promising technique for improving the physical characteristic of fast growing hardwoods.

  • Recently, the presurgical orthodontic duration tends to be shortened by virtue of the advancement of surgical and orthodontic techniques in class III orthognathic surgery cases. But the predictability of the surgical results should be secured by removing several uncertain factors in presurgical orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of immediate postsurgical occlusal stability on postsurgical mandibular change. The study includes 40 patients who underwent orthognathic surgery to correct skeletal class III malocclusion. The patients were divided into two groups based on the numbers of occlusal contact in surgical setup occlusion: group 1 (stable surgical occlusion, n=24) and group 2(unstable surgical occlusion, n=16). Changes of horizontal and vertical mandibular measurements during postsurgical follow up period(from 1 week postsurgery to 12month after debonding) were compared to examine the differences between two groups. The stability of surgical occlusion is one of the factors influencing postsurgical mandibular changes in class III malocclusion. The various class III malocclusion cases have specific prerequisites for the orthognathic surgery according to the skeletal patterns. The prerequisites should be obtained by minimum presurgical orthodontics to increase the predictability of the surgical results.

  • Though the stability review of buoyancy is generally done, the stability review of buoyancy moment, which is generated from the eccentricity between the center of fixed load and that of buoyancy, is not done in the water treatment concrete structure and the architectual structure. In this review, as the buoyancy force become larger, the action point of the fixed load (ΣW) and buoyancy (B), and the reaction distribution were considered to confirm the formation of the buoyancy moment rotational point and obtained the rotational uplift stability review formula for buoyancy moment in the water treatment concrete structure and the architechual structure, and put forward the stability review method for buoyancy moment.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of dietary proteins and fats on the hepatic histological changes, membrane stability, and drug-metabolizing enzyme activities during chemically induced rat hepatocarcinogenesis. Weanling Sprague-Dawley rats were fed the diet containing 20% casein or soy protein isolate and 15% perilla or corn oil for 10 weeks. Hepatocarcinogensis was initiated with diethylnitrosamine(DEN), and the rats were fed diets containing 0.02% 2-acetylaminofluorene(AAF) followed by 0.05% phenobarbital (PB). The scores of histological changes were decreased in treated rats fed soy protein diet compared to those find casein diet. Liver weights were significantly increased by AAF and PB treatment in rats fed casein diets in both oil groups. Glucose 6-phosphatase(G6Pase) activities, an index of membrane stability, were significantly reduced by AAF and PB treatment in rats find casein diets, and were lower in casein diet compared to soy protein diet groups. Especially, the activities were the highest in the rats fed soy protein-perilla oil diet. Lipid peroxide values also were increased by AAF and PB treatment in rats fed casein diet. Aniline hydroxylase activities were not influenced by protein and fat sources. Glutathione-dependent enzyme activities were increased by AAF and PB treatment. Linoleic and arachidonic acid content were increased in rats fed corn oil diet, and linolenic and eicosapentaenoic acid contents were increased in rats fed perilla oil diet. Our results suggest that soy protein isolate inhibit the abnormal histological changes in liver, possibly by maintaining the membrane stability during chemically induced rat hepatocarcinogenesis. Soy protein may be protective against the hepatocarcinogenesis induced by chemical carcinogen.
