  • In order to overcome the problems of simulation methods, the power system transient stability assessment method using critical fault clearing time functions has been developed. Using the above method, this paper has developed the new method which can assess accurately and efficiently the effects of control and protection systems on transient stability which is the most important characteristic to assess in power systems. At first, critical fault clearing time functions CCT(W:load) are defined by taking notice of the fact that transient stability is mainly controlled by fault clearing time and load. Next, the method to be enable to assess accurately and efficiently the effects of control and protection systems on transient stability has been newly developed by using the above functions. Finally, it has been applied to the effect assessment in the occurrence of a three-phase fault in a model power system. Results of application have been clarified its effectiveness.

  • This paper discusses the measurement of frequency response functions for various dc-dc converters. The frequency domain identification procedure is applied to the measured frequency responses. The identified transfer functions are primarily used in developing behavioral models for dc-dc converters. Distributed power systems are based upon such converters in cascade, parallel and several other configurations. The system level analysis of a complete system becomes complex when the identified transfer functions are of high order. Therefore, a certain technique needs to be applied for order reduction of the identified transfer functions. During the process of order reduction, it has to be ensured that the system retains the dynamics of the full order system. The technique used here is based on the Hankel singular values of a system. A systematic procedure is given to retain the maximum energy states for the reduced order model. A dynamic analysis is performed for behavioral models based on full and reduced order frequency responses. The close agreement of results validates the effectiveness of the model order reduction. Stability is the key design objective for any system designer. Therefore, the measured frequency responses at the interface of the source and load are also used to predict stability of the system.

  • Using the computer-generated Lyapunov functions due to Brayton-tong's constructive algorithm, we estimate the domains of attraction of dynamical systems of the second order, and analyze the asymptotic stability of large scale contincous-time and discrete-time systems by the decomposition and aggregation method. With this approach we get the less conservative stability results than the existing methods.

  • In this study, a geometric nonlinear analysis formulation for spatial frames is developed using the 3D stability functions. For the formulation, the relationships of local and global coordinate systems in force, deformation, and the initial and current configurations of a frame are derived. The force-deformation relationship in global coordinate system is derived as well. The developed formulation is verified in each derivation by reducing the derived equations into 2D equations. The gradual plastification of connections and critical sections can be implemented effectively to this formulation for the complete second order inelastic advanced analysis of spatial frames.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel stability criterion for switched linear systems. The proposed method employs the results on the upper bound of the solution of LME(Lyapunov Matrix Equation) and on the stability of hybrid system. The former guarantees the existence of Lyapunov-like energy functions and the latter shows that the stability of switched linear systems by using these energy functions. The proposed criterion releases the restriction on the stability of switched linear systems comparing with the existing methods and provides us with easy implementation way for pole assignment.

  • Some proteins of E. coli are stable at temperatures significantly higher than $49^{\circ}C$, the maximum temperature at which the organism can grow. The heat stability of such proteins would be a property which is inherent to their structures, or it might be acquired by evolution for their specialized functions. In this study, we describe the identification of 17 heat-stable proteins from E. coli. Approximately one-third of these proteins were recognized as having functions in the protection of other proteins against denaturation. These included chaperonin (GroEL and GroES), molecular chaperones (DnaK and FkpA) and peptidyl prolyl isomerases (trigger factor and FkpA). Another common feature was that five of these proteins (GroEL, GroES, Ahpc, RibH and ferritin) have been shown to form a macromolecular structure. These results indicated that the heat stability of certain proteins may have evolved for their specialized functions, allowing them to cope with harsh environments, including high temperatures.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel stability criterion and a guideline of controller design for switched linear systems. Unlike existing criterions such as Lie algebraic method and multiple Lyapunov functions method, the proposed criterion can be applied to each individual system without considering an overall system. By applying the proposed criterion to each individual system separately, a state feedback controller can be easily designed. Stability of the overall system is proved by developing a rule to determine non-increasing Lyapunov functions recursively at each switching instant. An illustrative example is given.

  • Most of the theorems of nonlinear stability is based on the Lyapunov stability theory. The Lyapunov function method is the most well-known and provides precise and rigorous theoretical backgrounds. However, tile conventional approach to direct stability analysis has been performed without taking account of damping effects. For accurate stability analysis of nonlinear systems, it is required to consider the damping effects. This paper presents a new method to derive a group of Lyapunov functions to reflect the damping effects by considering the integral relationships of the system governing equations. This method tan be utilized as a powerful tool to determine the region of attraction.

  • A new concept of stability that includes Lyapunov and orbital stabilities and leads to concepts in between them is discussed in terms of a given topology of the function space. The criteria for such new concepts to hold are investigted employing suitably Lyapunov-like functions and the comparison principle.
