Due to a lack of the hoop action of lateral reinforcements the effective confining force in rectangular sections reduces compared to circular ones. Therefore, the stress-strain model obtained from the experimental data with circular sections overestimates the lateral confinement effect in rectangular sections, which evaluates seismic safety margin of overall structural system excessively. In this study experiments with laterally-confined square sections have been performed and the characteristic values composing stress-strain model have been analyzed. With introduction of section coefficients, in addition, the new unified stress-strain model applicable to square sections as well as circular ones has been proposed.
Generally, the buckling of thin-walled structures has studied for rectangular sections or circular sections. Rectangular sections have small stiffness and circular sections have large stiffness when they are compared with rectangular sections for local buckling. But both of them have similar stiffness to column buckling. Therefore in this paper, we are going to analyze the local buckling for the box section with rounded comer and compare with rectangular section. Also we confirm that the rounded comer section has larger local buckling strength than rectangular section.
FRP confining is a widely used method for seismic retrofitting of concrete columns. Several studies investigated the stress-strain behavior of FRP confined concrete prisms with square and rectangular sections both experimentally and analytically. In some studies, the monotonic stress-strain behavior of confined concrete was investigated and compressive strength models were developed. To study the reliability of these models, thorough statistical tests are required. This paper aims to investigate the reliability of the presented models using statistical tests including t-test, wilcoxon rank sum test, wilcoxon signed rank test and sign test with a level of significance of 5%. Wilk Shapiro test was also employed to evaluate the normality of the data distribution. The results were compared for different cross section and confinement types. To see the accuracy of the models when there were no significant differences between the results, the coefficient of confidence was used.
Tubular construction is widely used in a range of civil and structural engineering applications. To date, the principal product range has comprised square, rectangular and circular hollow sections. However, hot-rolled structural steel elliptical hollow sections have been recently introduced and offer further choice to engineers and architects. Currently though, a lack of fundamental structural performance data and verified structural design guidance is inhibiting uptake. Of fundamental importance to structural metallic design is the concept of cross-section classification. This paper proposes slenderness parameters and a system of cross-section classification limits for elliptical hollow sections, developed on the basis of laboratory tests and numerical simulations. Four classes of cross-sections, namely Class 1 to 4 have been defined with limiting slenderness values. For the special case of elliptical hollow sections with an aspect ratio of unity, consistency with the slenderness limits for circular hollow sections in Eurocode 3 has been achieved. The proposed system of cross-section classification underpins the development of further design guidance for elliptical hollow sections.
During the last two decades, CFRP have been extensively used for repair and rehabilitation of existing structures as well as in new construction applications. For rehabilitation purposes CFRP are currently used to increase the load and the energy absorption capacities and also the shear strength of concrete columns. Thus, the effect of CFRP confinement on the strength and deformation capacity of concrete columns has been extensively studied. However, the majority of such studies consider empirical relationships based on correlation analysis due to the fact that until today there is no general law describing such a hugely complex phenomenon. Moreover, these studies have been focused on the performance of circular cross section columns and the data available for square or rectangular cross sections are still scarce. Therefore, the existing relationships may not be sufficiently accurate to provide satisfactory results. That is why intelligent models with the ability to learn from examples can and must be tested, trying to evaluate their accuracy for composite compressive strength prediction. In this study the forecasting of wrapped CFRP confined concrete strength was carried out using different Data Mining techniques to predict CFRP confined concrete compressive strength taking into account the specimens' cross section: circular or rectangular. Based on the results obtained, CFRP confined concrete compressive strength can be accurately predicted for circular cross sections using SVM with five and six input parameters without spending too much time. The results for rectangular sections were not as good as those obtained for circular sections. It seems that the prediction can only be obtained with reasonable accuracy for certain values of the lateral confinement coefficient due to less efficiency of lateral confinement for rectangular cross sections.

This paper presents a finite-element analysis (FEA) of aluminum alloy rectangular hollow sections (RHSs) and square hollow sections (SHSs) with circular through-openings under three-point and four-point bending. First, a finite-element model (FEM) was developed and validated against the corresponding test results available in the literature. Next, using the validated FE models, a parametric study comprising 180 FE models was conducted. The cross-section width-to-thickness ratio (b/t) ranged from 2 to 5, the hole size ratio (d/h) ranged from 0.2 to 0.8 and the quantity of holes (n) ranged from 2 to 6, respectively. Third, results obtained from laboratory test and FEA were compared with current design strengths calculated in accordance with the North American Specifications (NAS), the modified direct strength method (DSM) and the modified Continuous strength method (CSM). The comparison shows that the modified CSM are conservative by 15% on average for aluminum alloy RHSs and SHSs with circular through-openings subject to bending. Finally, a new design equation is proposed based on the modified CSM after being validated with results obtained from laboratory test and FEA. The proposed design equation can provide accurate predictions of flexural capacities for aluminum alloy RHSs and SHSs with circular through-openings.
Studies on the second-order analysis of reinforced concrete columns have been chiefly dealt with symmetric section under uniaxial loading. In practical situations, however, columns are subjected to biaxial loadings. Therefore, for more accurate prediction of the behavior of concrete columns under biaxial loading, the interaction between bending moments of major and minor axes should be considered. Recently Kim & Lee proposed a numerical method of predicting the behavior of concrete columns under biaxial loading. In this paper, to investigate the behavior of concrete columns under biaxial loading and verify the validity of proposed method, a series of test were carried out for sixteen tied reinforced columns with 100${\times}$100mm square and 200${\times}$100mm rectangular sections under various loading conditions. The length of columns was 1,300mm and the concrete strength was 28MPa. The boundary conditions at the both ends were hinged and end eccentricities were equal(400mm). Proposed numerical analyses applied to the test piece were performed to predict behavior of concrete columns with square and rectangular sections under various loading conditions. Test results were also compared with those using the moment magnifier method in ACI code. The test results showed that the moment magnifier method is conservative.

An experimental investigation of lightweight aggregate and foamed concrete contribution to the ultimate strength capacity of square and rectangular steel tube sections is presented in this study. Thirty-four simply supported beam specimens, 1000-mm long, filled with lightweight aggregate and foamed concretes were tested in pure flexural bending to calculate the ultimate moment capacity. Normal concrete-filled steel tubular and bare steel sections of identical dimensions were also tested and compared to the filled steel sections. Theoretical values of ultimate moment capacity of the beam specimens were also calculated in this study for comparison purposes. The test results showed that lightweight aggregate and foamed concrete significantly enhance the load carrying capacity of steel tubular sections. Furthermore, it can be concluded from this study that lightweight aggregate and foamed concretes can be used in composite construction to increase the flexural capacity of the steel tubular sections.
This paper presents an inverse design methodology for the cross section geometry of mold spring with a rectangular cross section as the starting material for a coiling process. The cross-sections of mold springs are universally rectangular, as the parallel sides minimize the possibility of failure under high service loads. Pre-coiled wires are initially designed to have a trapezoidal cross section, which becomes a rectangle by the coiling process. This study demonstrates a numerical exercise to predict changes in the sectional geometry in spring manufacture and to obtain the initial cross section which becomes the exact rectangle desired from the manufacturing process. Finite element analysis was carried out to calculate the sectional changes for various mold springs. Geometrical parameters were the widths at inner and outer radii, the inner and the outer corner radii, and the height. A partial least square regression analysis was carried out to find the main contributing factors for deciding initial design values. The height and the width mainly affected various initial parameters. The initial width at the inner radius was mostly affected by various specification parameters.
Collapse characteristics of thin-walled hatted section tubes are investigated. The square section members with flanges are substituted by the equivalent rectangular tube. The stiffening effects of flanges are transformed to the restraining plate with the equivalency of buckling strength. The square tubes of single-hatted and double-hatted sections are investigated. The double-hatted section members show symmetric and antisymmetric crushing modes depending on the stiffness of flanges. The single-hatted section members show only symmetric modes. The bifurcation point of the compact crushing modes are investigated by experiments and shown almost same thickness-width ratio of the rectangular tubes. A large maximum crippling strength can be obtained by double-hatted section members with proper flange dimensions.
