  • In this article, spray characteristics in CI engines fuelled with vegetable oils and its derivatives will be reviewed. Of edible vegetable oils, soybean oil and rapeseed oil were mainly investigated. Of inedible vegetable oils, jatropha oil and used frying oil were main concern on the research on the spray characteristics in CI engine. Spray angle and spray penetration were mainly examined among the macroscopic spray characteristics and Sauter mean diameter was only investigated among the microscopic spray characteristics. There exist six different definitions of spray angle which should be examined. Neat vegetable oil and biodiesel fuels show smaller spray angle than diesel fuel. Biodiesel fuel and vegetable oils and its blend have a longer spray penetration than diesel fuel. However, biodiesel blends with diesel shows the similar spray penetration with diesel fuel. SMDs in the biodiesel spray, vegetable oils and its blends spray are higher than that in the diesel spray.

  • Non-edible vegetable oils instead of edible vegetable oils as a substitute for diesel fuel are getting a renewed attention because of global reduction of green house gases and concerns for long-term food and energy security. Out of various non-edible vegetable oils, karanja, mahua, linseed, rubber seed and cotton seed oils are selected in this study. A brief review of recent works related to the application of the above five vegetable oils and its derivatives in CI engines is presented. The production technologies of biodiesel based on non-edible vegetable oils are introduced. Problems in vegetable oil or biodiesel fuelled CI engine are included. In addition, future works related to spray characteristics of non-edible vegetable oil or biodiesel from it are discussed. The biodiesel fuel, irrespective of the feedstock used, results in a decrease in the emission of hydrocardon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM) and sulphur dioxide ($SO_2$). It is also said to be carbon neutral as it contributes no net carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Only oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are reported to increase which is due to oxygen content in the biodiesel fuel. The systematic assessment of spray char-acteristics of neat vegetable oils and its blends, neat biodiesel and its blends f3r use as diesel engine fuels is required.

  • There have been significant improvements in base oil quality in order to satisfy recent market needs. In particular requirements of passenger car motor oils have been leading the trend. Now, high quality base oils such as VHVI base oils and PAOs are to be formulated in order to meet the tight volatility specifications. The severe hydrocracking, hydro-isomerized dewaxing and hydro-finishing process with noble-metal based catalysts (named UCO lube process) developed by SK corporation has been introduced as one of economic hydroprocessing routes to produce high quality VHVI base oils and food grade white mineral oils from fuels hydrocracker residue. Product quality of UCO lube process is similar to PAO in. general performances and therefore provides satisfactory performance far all straightforward applications in general lubricants. However, when applied to specialty lubricants like transformer oils, spray oils and coning oils, severely hydrocracked base oils are known to have various compatibility problems with gas or surfactants formulated in them. These problems are related to the difference in their composition; inherent high paraffin contents and lack of dissolving ability, Fortunately, it was found that excellent specialty lubricants could be made by carefully selecting and formulating adequate additives and/or aromatic compounds. Moreover, these specialties with high quality VHVI base oils ofter various advantages over conventional base oil based products.

  • Several methods are available to measure the oxidation of edible oils, such as their acid, peroxide, and anisidine values. However, these methods require large quantities of reagents and are time-consuming tasks. Therefore, a more convenient and time-saving way to measure the oxidation of edible oils is required. In this study, an edible oil-condition sensor was fabricated using single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) made using the spray deposition method. SWNTs were dispersed in a dimethylformamide solution. The suspension was then sprayed using a spray gun onto a prefabricated Au/Ti electrode. To test the sensor, oxidized edible oils, each with a different acid value, were prepared. The SWNT sensors were immersed into these oxidized oils, and the resistance changes in the sensors were measured. We found that the conductivity of the sensors decreased as the oxidation level of the oil increased. In the case of the virgin oil, the resistance change ratio in the SWNT sensor S(%) = {[(Rf - Ri)]/Ri}(%) was more than 40% after immersion for 1 min. However, in the case of the oxidized oil, the resistance change ratio decreased to less than that of the response of the virgin oil. This result suggests that the change in the oil components induced by the oxidation process in edible oils is related to the conductivity change in the SWNT sensor.

  • This study focused on the use of orimulsion in industrial combustion systems. Orimulsion is a bitumen-in-water emulsified fuel, which contains a thirty percent water. Orimulsion has relatively high levels of sulfur and nitrogen compared to many fuel oils, and has been the subject of much debate regarding the environmental impacts of its use. The goal of this research is to analyze the effect of flash spray combustion characteristics of orimulsion on NOx and particulate material reduction. For the flash spray of orimulsion, it is heated to $150^{\circ}C$. The effects of fuel heating temperatures on NOx and particulate material emissions were investigated experimentally. As the fuel temperature was increased, NOx and particulate material concentrations in flue gas were decreased.

  • The use of inedible vegetable oils as substitute for diesel fuel in compression ignition engine is of significance because of the great need for edible oil as food, and the reduction of biodiesel production cost etc. Jatropha curcas oil which is a leading candidate for the commercialization of inedible vegetable oils is selected in this study for reviewing the application in CI engine as an alternative fuel. The important properties of jatropha oil (JO) and JO biodiesel are summarized from the various sources in the literature. It is found that five different types of alternative fuel from JO such as neat JO, JO blends with diesel or other fuel, neat JO biodiesel, JO biodiesel blends with diesel or other fuel and degummed JO were extensively examined in the diesel engine. Two different application types of alternative fuels from JO such as preheating and dual fuelling were also tested, It should be pointed out that most of these applications are limited to single cylinder conditions. The systematic study for the selection of effective application method is required. It is clear that the blends of JOME and diesel can replace diesel fuel up to 10% by volume for running the existing common rail direct injection systems without any durability problems. The systematic assessment of spray characteristics of different types of JO and its derivatives for use as diesel engine fuel is also required.
