Preparation of Hollow Silica by Spray Drying of Nano Silica Particles and Its Heat Transfer Property (나노 실리카의 분무건조를 이용한 중공구 입자 제조와 실리카중공구의 열전달 특성)

  • Hollow silica spheres were prepared by spray drying of precursor solution of colloidal silica. The precursor solution is composed of 10-20 nm colloidal silica dispersed in a water or ethanol-water mixture solvent with additives of tris hydroxymethyl aminomethane. The effect of pH and concentrations of the precursor and additives on the formation of hollow sphere particles was studied. The spray drying process parameters of the precursor feeding rate, inlet temperature, and gas flow rate are controlled to produce the hollow spherical silica. The mixed solvent of ethanol and water was preferred because it improved the hollowness of the spheres better than plain water did. It was possible to obtain hollow silica from high concentration of 14.3 wt% silica precursor with pH 3. The thermal conductivity and total solar reflectivity of the hollow silica sample was measured and compared with those values of other commercial insulating fillers of glass beads and $TiO_2$ for applications of insulating paint, in which the glass beads are representative of the low thermal conductive fillers and the $TiO_2$ is representative of infrared reflective fillers. The thermal conductivity of hollow silica was comparable to that of the glass beads and the total solar reflectivity was higher than that of $TiO_2$.

Characteristics of Ultrafiltration and Spray Drying for Crude Protein Bound Polysaccharides Isolated from Agaricus blasei Murill (아가리쿠스버섯에서 분리한 조단백다당류의 막분리 및 분무건조 특성)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of ultrafiltration and spray drying process for crude protein bound polysaccharide(CPBP) isolated from Agaricus blasei Murill. In ultrafiltration process, the permeate flux increased with the increase of operating pressure and temperature. The permeate flux declined continuously while the fouling materials were accumulated on the membrane as the operation time increased. In comparing of raw CPBP and filtered CPBP, the viscosity of CPBP treated UF was decreased and $\Delta$E value of treated samples was increased. Thermal efficiencies of spray drying process were increased by increasing inlet temperature, feed rate and feed concentration.

  • Zirconia/alumina mixture powder was spray-dried various degree of dispersion, type of dispersants and powder content in the slurry. The quality of the granule was determined by observation of the granule shapes after spray drying and fracture of intergranular boundaries during pressing. Defect-free granules were obtained from the powders that formed weak flocs in the slurry. The granules, spray-dried from the slurry containing 32.5 vol% powder mixture and PVP as binder, were fractured completely during shaping and the sintered specimens showed a density of 99.7% and a flexural strength of 850 MPa.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different wall material on the microencapsulation efficiency of microcapsules containing fish oil. The present work reports on the microencapsulation of fish oil by spray drying using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) 2910, maltodextrin, gelatin, sodium caseinate as wall materials. The emulsion stability was assessed by emulsion stability index value (ESI). The microstructural properties of microcapsules was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and microencapsulation efficiency (ME) was assessed by soxhlet method. The highest ESI and ME were observed in the case of a 1:1 gelatin/sodium caseinate ratio and 1:1 glycerin fatty acid ester/lecithin ratio, and ME of microcapsules was increased with increasing the ESI of emulsion. Thus, the stability of emulsion was a critical factor for the encapsulation of fish oil.

Preparation and Characterization of Solid Dispersion of Ipriflavone with Polyvinylpyrrolidone

  • Solid dispersions of ipriflavone with PVP were prepared by a spray-drying method in order to improve the bioavailability. They were measured with scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray powder diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to evaluate the physicochemical interaction between ipriflavone and PVP and study the correlation between these physicochemical characteristics and bioavailability. Ipriflavone exhibited crystallinity, whereas PVP was almost amorphous. The area of the endotherm $({\Delta}H)$ of freezer milled ipriflavone, freezer milled ipriflavone physically mixed with freezer milled PVP, and physically mixed ipriflavone with PVP was almost the same, whereas ${\Delta}H$ of the solid dispersed ipriflavone with PVP was much smaller than that of the other preparation types. Also, the crystallinity and the crystal size of ipriflavone in the solid dispersed ipriflavone with PVP were much smaller than those of the other preparation types. From the in vivo test, the AUC of the solid dispersed ipriflavone with PVP was approximately 10 times higher than that of the physically mixed ipriflavone with PVP. The solid dispersion using the spray-drying method with a water-soluble polymer, PVP, may be effective for the improvement of the bioavailability.

  • The microspheres have been developed as a new drug delivery system. Although many particulate drug carriers, such as liposome, niosome and emulsion, have been introduced, injectable and biodegradable microspheres appears to be a particularly ideal delivery system because the local anesthesia is not necessary for the insertion of large implants and for the removal of the device after the drug release is finished. Biodegradable microspheres with nicotine and triamcinolone acetonide are prepared and evaluated. As biodegradible polymers, PLA (M.W. 15,000, PLA-0015), PLGA (M.W. 17,000, RG 502) and PLGA (M.W. 8,600, RG 502H) are used. This study attempted to prepare and evaluate the nicotine and triamcinolone acetonide-incorporated microspheres, which were prepared by two methods, solvent-evaporation and spray-drying methods. The microspheres, as a disperse system for injections, were evaluated by particle size, size distribution, entrapment efficiency, and in vitro drug release patterns. The differences of preparation method, partition coefficient, types of polymer, and preparation conditions of microspheres influence the particle size, entrapment efficiency, and in vitro drug release patterns.

Influence of Solid Loading on the Granulation of 3Y-TZP Powder by Two-Fluid Spray Drying

  • The influence of solid loading in the slurry composition on the morphology of 3Y-TZP granules fabricated by two-fluid spray drying was investigated for solid contents varying between 30 wt% and 50 wt%. The resulting 3Y-TZP granules showed a sphere-like shape with diameters of $40-70{\mu}m$. However, a donut-like shape and a few cracks were observed on the granule surfaces fabricated using the slurry with 50 wt% solid content. The green density after cold isostatic pressing at 200 MPa was $2.1-2.2g/cm^3$, and a homogeneous fracture surface was obtained by complete destruction of granules. After sintering at $1500^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, all specimens had relative densities of 96.2 - 98.3%. With increasing solid content, the relative density decreased from 98.3% to 96.2%, but the grain size increased from $0.3{\mu}m$ to $0.6{\mu}m$. Highly sinterable zirconia granule powder could be obtained by controlling the slurry composition.

Flue Gas Sulfur Dioxide Removal Performance of a Bench-Scale Spray Absorption/Drying Reactor (실험실적 규모의 분무흡수건조반응기의 배출가스 중 아황산가스 처리성능 연구)

  • The main purpose of this study was to investigate sulfur dioxide removal performance of flue gas desulfurization system utilizing a Spray Absorption/Drying Reactor. In this system, the size of droplets was considered the most significant factor and tested using a PDA system. Lime slurry flow rate, operating temperature, calcium/sulfur (Ca/S) ratio and applied air pressure were selected as major operation variables and tested/analyzed in terms of system performance. The results are as follows. 1. The $SO_2$ removal efficiencies were 49%, 74%, 85% for Ca$(OH)_2$ slurry flow rate of 10, 20, 30 ml/min, which implies that the increase of slurry flow rate improves removal efficiency. The optimum slurry flow rate in this study was, however, considered 20 ml/min because of constraints of system troubles and absorbent utilization. 2. As Ca/S ratio increased, $SO_2$ removal efficiency was observed to increase. 3. As air pressure, at the atomizing nozzole, increased from 3 to 5 $kg/cm^2, SO_2$ removal efficiency increased from 74% to 80%, because of droplet size reduction due to pressure increase during atomizing process and the increase of surface area, helping mass transfer between gas and liquid phase.

Fabrication and Characterization of Gastrodia elata-loaded Particles for Increased Moisture Stability (수분 안정성 향상을 위한 천마 추출물 함유 분말의 제조 및 평가)

  • To develop Gastrodia elata (GE)-loaded particles for herbal extract dosage forms, various GE-loaded particles containing dextrin, isomalt, maltodextrin, and silicon dioxide as solidifying carriers in the GE water extract are prepared using the spray drying method. Their physical properties are evaluated using the repose angle, Hausner ratio, Carr's index, weight increase rate at 40℃/75% RH condition, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Particles made of dextrin improve the fluidity, compressibility, and water stability. In addition, 2% silicon dioxide increases the fluidity and moisture stability. The best flowability and compressibility of GE-loaded particles are observed with TP, dextrin, and silicon dioxide amounts in the ratio of 6/4/0.2 (34.29 ± 2.86°, 1.48 ± 0.03, and 38.29 ± 2.39%, repose angle, Hausner Ratio, and Carr's index, respectively) and moisture stability with a 2% weight increase rate for 14 h at 40℃/75% RH condition. Therefore, our results suggest that the particles prepared by the spray drying method with dextrin and 2% silicon dioxide can be used as powerful particles to improve the flowability, compressibility, and moisture stability of GE.

Eco-Friendly Synthesis of Rod-Like Potassium Hexatitanate Particles (친환경 공정에 의한 봉상형 육티탄산칼륨 입자의 제조)

  • Potassium hexatitanate ($K_2Ti_6O_{13}$) with high thermal insulating capacity, good mechanical properties, and excellent chemical stability are promising functional materials in the field of reinforcing material, heat insulating paints and automotive brake linings. In this study, we successfully synthesized rod-shaped potassium hexatitanate ($K_2Ti_6O_{13}$) by aerosol spray drying and post heat treatment as an eco-friendly process. The $KHCO_3-TiO_2$ porous particles were firstly synthesized from a colloidal mixture of $K_2CO_3$ and $TiO_2$ via aerosol spray drying. Size of $KHCO_3-TiO_2$ porous particles was ranged from $1{\mu}m$ to $5{\mu}m$. The porous particles were then heated to fabricate rod-type $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$. The length and width of rod-type composites were affected by temperature and heating time. The length and width of $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ were increased by 830 nm and 500 nm, respectively, as the reaction temperature and time increased.
