Spongy Alphonso mangoes were found to be infected with Staphylococcus bacteria. A Gram positive Staphylococcus strain was isolated from spongy pulp and identified from CABI Bioscience, UK, by partial 16S rDNA sequence analysis and by morphological and biochemical characterization through IMTECH, Chandigarh, India. Although identification by both of these methods indicated the organism belonged to same genus, different species names were given. Changes in total phenolics, reducing, and non-reducing sugars, respiration rate, total carotenoids, peroxidase(POX), and catalase activities were monitored during ripening of these fruits. The climacteric rise in spongy fruits was marked by an increase in respiration rate and a decrease in sugar content. Total phenolics content increased in spongy fruits as compared to ripe non-spongy fruits. Development of corky white tissue in spongy fruits was associated with about a 2.5-fold reduction in total carotenoids and a concomitant increase in lipoxygenase-mediated, $\beta$-carotene co-oxidation. A marked decrease in soluble protein content and about a 1.5-fold increase in POX activity was observed. Maximum POX activity was confined to 50-70%$(NH_4)_2SO_4$ fraction. The intense dark bands visible after POX specific substrate staining of the Native gel indicated a high expression of isoenzymes of POX in spongy fruits. Similarly, changes in levels of catalase activity were also observed in spongy fruits. The results suggest that infection of Alphonso mangoes with Staphylococcus bacteria affects the normal ripening processes of the fruit interfering with the carbohydrate and carotenoid metabolism. Also, the studies indicate the expression of POX and catalase enzymes as a plant defense response to microbial invasion.
Anatomy of Pinus koraiensis needles and Ginkgo biloba leaves was investigated after exposure to simulated acid rain, drought and salt solution. All of the stresses applied to the needle of Pinus koraiensis caused collapse of mesophyll tissues; epidermis was collapsed due to acid rain, severe compress and transformation of epidermis, mesophyll, and endodermis to drought, and collapse of phloem and transfusion tissue to salt solution. Spongy mesophyll tissues, however, collapsed in the leaves of Ginkgo biloba; epidermis and palisade tissues collapsed due to acid rain, compress and transformation of spongy mesophyll tissues to drought, and hypertrophy and collapse of endodermis and transfusion tissues to salt solution.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of total polymer concentration on the chemical structure, morphology of pores, porosity, swelling ratio, degradation of gelatin-poly (vinyl alcohol) (Gel-PVA) cryogel scaffolds. Porous cryogels were prepared with cryogelation technique by using glutaraldehyde as a crosslinker. Functional group composition of cryogels after crosslinking was investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The morphology of cryogels was characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and porosity analysis. All of the cryogels had a porous structure with an average pore size between $45.58{\pm}14.28$ and $50.14{\pm}4.26{\mu}m$. The cryogels were biodegradable and started to degrade in 14 days. As the polymer concentration increased the swelling ratio, the porosity and the degradation rate decreased. Spongy and mechanically stable Gel-PVA cryogels, with tunable properties, can be potential candidates as scaffolds for tissue engineering applications.
The severe atrophic edentulism with poor neuromuscular control militates against successful conventional denture therapy. To such situation, a prescribing of dental implant treatment has been considered with some probability. Implant materials used as a trial for dental implants includes metals, plastic polymers and ceramics. The purpose of this study was to observe histologic response in osseointegration process at titanium implant-tissue interface based on biocompatibility at specific period of sequential natures which were divided into a half month, one, month, two months, three months and immediate as a base line. In this study, unilateral lower left premolar and molar teeth were extraced in three dogs. After allowing to heal for 6 months, three kinds of osseointegrated implant, $Br{\aa}nemark$, Corevent and kimplant(a prototype of SNU implant study)were inserted in each dog respectively according to the above sequence from front to back. The specimens were taken from those dogs at the same time since implant were inserted quite reverse order of the specified periods, and decalcified and processed for histologic examination for the light microscopy and the electron microscopy. The microscopic histologic findings at the interface between titanium implants and tissue were interpretated as follows : A. Light microscopic findings : a. Immediate : Implant were surrounded by compact bone and spongy bone. Microcrak was observed in the superficial bone tissue. Osteocytes were disappeared and bone lacunae were observed as a vacant space in some parts. In the contacting with the spongy bone, bone trabeculae and bone marrow were in contact with the implant. b. A half Month : Osteoblasts exist as a monolayer in th inner bone trabeculae and do bone additiocn. Osteoblasts&inflammatory cells were observed in some parts. c. One Month : The presence of osteoclasts decreased. Osteoblasts did active bone fromation, and bone marrow was in contact with the implant in the many places. d. Two Months : Bone formation was advanced in comparison with the b and c. The presence of osteoclsts was not observed. e. Three Months : The superficial bone tissue contacted with the implants was entirely composed by the compact bone. B. Electron microscopic findings : a. A half month and one month group : In the parts of the active bone formation, osteoblasts with the well developed endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus were arranged in the monolayer. In the parts of the bone resorption, ruffled border was well developed and many osteoclasts with the well-developed golgi apparatus, mitochondria, vacuole, vesicle and lysosome were existed. b. Three months group : No osteoblasts were observed in the superficial bone tissue. Bone matrix with collaen fiber was observed. c. No significant dirrerence in the histologic findings was observed in $Br{\aa}nemark$, Core-vent and kimplant.
This study was to analyze the stress distribution of implant and supporting tissue in $Br{\aa}nemark$ osseointegration implant. The analysis has been conducted by using the axisymmetric finite element method and type of model according to crown material. Tests have been performed at 1 kg load on central fossa of crown portion. Each type of model was designed differently according to crown material. 1) Porcelain fused to metal crown(Model A) 2) Composite resin veneered crown(Model B) 3) Acrylic resin veneered crown(Model C) 4) Type III gold crown(Model D) The displacements and stresses of implant and supporting structures were analyzed to investigate the influence of the type of crown material. The results were obtained as follows : 1. Displacement of implant was shown uniformly downward displacement in all models and abutments were observed distally downward displacement. 2. In supporting tissues, stress was concentrated on the crest of compact bone and the spongy bone below implant. 3. The PFM and the type III gold crown showed the largest concentration of stress at the crest of compact bone and the spongy bone below implant, respectively. Acrylic resin artificial teeth and composite resin veneered crown indicated almost the same distribution of stress. 4. The gold screw, the abutment screw and the top of abutment showed the concentration of stress in implants of every model.
The histological structure of the heart in Pseudorasbora parva was investigated by light microscope. The heart consisted of four consecutive chambers, the sinus venosus, atrium, ventricle and bulbus arteriosus. The wall of the sinus venosus was divided into endocardium, myocardium and epicardium, and the walls of the atrium and ventricle were divided into endocardium, subendocardium, myocardium, subepicardium and epicardium, and the wall of the bulbus arteriosus was divided into endocardium, subendocardium (ridge tissue), middle layer, subepicardium and epicardium. The valves were observed in the sinoatrial, artrioventricular and bulboventricular junctions. The sinus venosus wall was mostly made up of collagen. The rings of tissue were observed at the sinoatrial junction. The atrium was composed of a spongy trabeculate myocardium surrounded by an external rim of thin myocardium, and collagens were distributed in the subepicardium and trabeculae. The ventricle was a spongy myocardium with vessels in subepicardium. In the subepicardium and trabeculae of the ventricle, collagens were distributed. In the bulbus arteriosus, the diameter and length of the ridges were differed. The endocardial cells were convex and the non-clustered subendocardial cells showed irregular shapes. The cells of the middle layer were arranged into incomplete layers that showed different orientations. The subepicardium was formed by cells of different morphology. Collagens and elastins were demonstrated in the subendocardium, middle layer and subepicardium of the bulbus arteriosus. The epicardium was a single layer composed of flattened cells.

The average temperatures for year and winter season have been risen by $0.7{\circ}C$ and $1.4{\circ}C$, respectively, during the last 30 years. Recently abnormal climate phenomena occurred frequently results in severe loss of vegetable crops grown in Korea. Specially, Chinese cabbages grown in the southern area of Korea are often significantly affected by sudden cold waves during winter season before harvest. This experiment was conducted to find out a potential role of covering materials on the protection of frost damage of 'Bularm' chinese cabbage in the winter season. The lowest temperature was $-15.8^{\circ}C$ in non-covering, $-8.1^{\circ}C$ in the PE film covering and $-4.6^{\circ}C$ in the non-woven fabric covering with PE film, respectively. The cumulative times below $4.0^{\circ}C$ were 145.5 hours for the non-covering treatment, 94 hours in the PE film covering and 14.5 hours in the non-woven fabric covering with PE film, respectively. The symptoms of frost damage were severe at non-covering chinese cabbages compared to polyethylene film (PE) non-woven fabric with PE covering ones. Microscopic studies showed the normal anatomical structure of palisade and spongy tissue of cabbage leaves covered with non-woven fabric with PE film. Leaf cells, however, were slightly damaged in cabbages covered with PE film alone, and both palisade and spongy cells were were completely collapsed in uncovered cabbages. The result of this study suggests that chinese cabbages is required to be covered with non-woven fabric with PE film to minimize the frost damage by sudden cold wave below $-7^{\circ}C$.
This experiment was carried out to obtain the basic information for the improving of leaf quality by topping time and depth in flue-cured tobacco. Development of palisade parenchyma and spongy parenchyma were in order of button stage>early flower stage>late flower stage by topping time, and were in order of 4th leaf topping from floral axis>2nd leaf topping from floral axis>floral axis by topping depth. When 2nd leaf from floral axis were topped at late flower stage in A grade field and at early flower stage in B grade field, total sugar to nicotine ratio ralating to organoleptic characteristics were desirable as 9.0 and 9.7, and petroleum ether extract contents relating flavor of flue-cured tobacco were high as 9.9% and 8.4%, respectively. In ecological tissue, percentage of direct effect on quality were 43.2% in palisade parenchyma. 26.5% in spongy parechyma. 17.7% in tissue ratio, 6.7% in leaf thickness, 3.1% in intercellular space, 2.8% in leaf type and in chemical components, were 40.6% in nicotine. 35.7% in T-sugar/nicotine, 10.0% in total sugar, 7.0% in T-nitrogen/nicotine, 4.6% in total nitrogen, 2.1% in petroleum ether extract. The optimum topping depth were desirable at topping under second leaf from floral axis at late flower stage in A grade field and at early flower stage in B grade field for good leaf quality.

The average annual and winter ambient air temperatures in Korea have risen by $0.7^{\circ}C$ and $1.4^{\circ}C$, respectively, during the last 30 years. Due to climate change, the occurrence of abnormal weather conditions has become more frequent, causing damage to vegetable crops grown in Korea. Hot pepper, chinese cabbage and radish, the three most popular vegetables in Korea, are produced more in the field than in the greenhouse. It has been a trend that the time for field transplanting of seedlings is getting earlier and earlier as the spring temperatures keep rising. Seedlings transplanted too early in the spring take a longer time to resume the normal growth, because they are exposed to suboptimal temperature conditions. This experiment was carried out to figure out the change of cellular tissue of chinese cabbage under the condition of low temperature to provide the information regarding the coming climatic change, on the performance of 'Chunkwang' chinese cabbage during the spring growing season. In our study, plant height, number of leaf, chlorophyll and leaf area was lower at the open field cultivation than heating house treatment after transplanting 50 days. Especially in fresh weight, compared with heating treatment, open field and not heated treatment were notably low with the 1/3 level. Of damage symptoms due to low temperature cabbage leaves about 10 sheets when $-3.0^{\circ}C$ conditions in chinese cabbage was a little bit of water soaking symptoms on the leaves. $-7.4^{\circ}C$ under increasingly severe water soaking symptoms of leaf turns yellow was dry. Microscopy results showed symptoms of $-3.0^{\circ}C$ when the mesophyll cell of palisade tissue and spongy tissue collapse, $-7.4^{\circ}C$ palisade tissue and spongy tissue was completely collapsed. The result of this study suggests that the growers should be cautioned not to transplant their chinese cabbage seedlings too early into the field, and should be re-transplanting or transplanting other plants if chinese cabbage are exposed to suboptimal temperature conditions ($-3.0^{\circ}C$ or $-7.4^{\circ}C$).
Some morphological characteristics were investigated on the leaves of quercus aliena, hypostomatous species, and lespedeza cyrtobotrya, amphistomatous species, that appeared dominantly on the rock faces in mt.pukhan, mt surak and mt. pulam near seoul. These characteristics were compared with those of normal sites rock faces. All two species growing on the rock faces had thickened leaves with well developed upper epidermis and palisade tissue. Quercus aliena growing on the rock faces showed the leaves with double layer of palisade cells and more regularly arranged spongy parenchyma cells to the lower epidermis. In the case of lespedeza cyrtobotrya, narrower and more lengthened palisade cells and smaller air gaps between the sponge parenchyma cells were observed on the rock faces than those growing in the normal sites. The stomater frequency of the lower epidermis of the tree leaves growing on the rock faces is higher thanthose of normal sites. However, the mean total stomata number of the tree leaves growing on the rock faces are fewer. Most of the morphological characteristics investigated indicate that the plants on the rock faces havesmaller coefficient of variation than those of the normal sites.
