  • Spintronics is a rapidly expanding research area because of recent developments in the physics of spin-dependent phenomena. For use as spintronic materials, dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) are of considerable interest as spin injectors for spintronic devices.$^{[1]}$ Many researchers have studied DMS, in which transition metal atoms are introduced into the lattice, thus inserting local magnetic moments into the lattice. • Interfacial properties of 5 nm MgO(001)/7 nm Fe(001)/1.8 nm MgO(001)/t nm Cu-phthalocyanine (CuPc) hybrid multilayers with t = 0, 1, 7, and 10 were investigated by using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). Rather sharp interfacial properties were observed in the CuPc films grown on an epitaxial MgO/Fe/MgO(001) trilayer than a MgO/Fe(001) bilayer. This work suggests a new way to improve device performance of organic spintronic devices by utilizing an artificially grown MgO(001) thin layer.

  • Graphene nanoribbons with zigzag-shaped edge (zGNRs) are predicted to be magnetic insulator at the ground state, attracting significant interest in view of spintronic applications [1]. On the other hand, although they are energetically and thermodynamically more favored than zGNRs [2], graphene nanoribbons with armchair-shaped edge (aGNRs) have been less spotlighted than zGNRs due to the absence of magnetism. Herein, based on the combined density functional theory (DFT) and matrix Green's function (MGF) approach, we consider aGNRs functionalized with various molecular groups, and show that the spin polarizations develop for some of the considered aGNR edge functionalization cases. The origin of the induced magnetism will be discussed within the Lieb's theorem [3]. This work will provide a novel guidance for the development of graphene-based spintronic devices.

  • In recent years, semi-metallic Bismuth (Bi) has attracted significant attention due to very large magnetoresistance (MR) at room temperature originating from long carrier mean free path l and small effective carrier mass m*[1, 2]. In particular, the MR behavior and long carrier mean free path l in Bi thin films can be exploited for spintronic devices, e.g. magnetic field sensors and spin-valve transistors. In present work, we present the magnetotransport properties of the electroplated and sputtered Bi thin films in the temperature range 4-300 K. (omitted)
