  • Using a cosmological ${\Lambda}CDM$ simulation, we analyze the differences between the widely-used spin parameters suggested by Peebles and Bullock. The dimensionless spin parameter ${\lambda}$ proposed by Peebles is theoretically well-justified but includes an annoying term, the potential energy, which cannot be directly obtained from observations and is computationally expensive to calculate in numerical simulations. The Bullock's spin parameter ${\lambda}^{\prime}$ avoids this problem assuming the isothermal density profile of a virialized halo in the Newtonian potential model. However, we find that there exists a substantial discrepancy between ${\lambda}$ and ${\lambda}^{\prime}$ depending on the adopted potential model (Newtonian or Plummer) to calculate the halo total energy and that their redshift evolutions differ to each other significantly. Therefore, we introduce a new spin parameter, ${\lambda}^{\prime\prime}$, which is simply designed to roughly recover the value of ${\lambda}$ but to use the same halo quantities as used in ${\lambda}^{\prime}$. If the Plummer potential is adopted, the ${\lambda}^{\prime\prime}$ is related to the Bullock's definition as ${\lambda}^{\prime\prime}=0.80{\times}(1+z)^{-1/12}{\lambda}^{\prime}$. Hence, the new spin parameter ${\lambda}^{\prime\prime}$ distribution becomes consistent with a log-normal distribution frequently seen for the ${\lambda}^{\prime}$ while its mean value is much closer to that of ${\lambda}$. On the other hand, in case of the Newtonian potential model, we obtain the relation of ${\lambda}^{\prime\prime}=(1+z)^{-1/8}{\lambda}^{\prime}$; there is no significant difference at z = 0 as found by others but ${\lambda}^{\prime}$ becomes more overestimated than ${\lambda}$ or ${\lambda}^{\prime\prime}$ at higher redshifts. We also investigate the dependence of halo spin parameters on halo mass and redshift. We clearly show that although the ${\lambda}^{\prime}$ for small-mass halos with $M_h$ < $2{\times}10^{12}M_{\odot}$ seems redshift independent after z = 1, all the spin parameters explored, on the whole, show a stronger correlation with the increasing halo mass at higher redshifts.

  • Top spin valve films with PtMn antiferromagnetic layers were deposited using a multi-target dc magnetron sputtering in (100)Si substrates overcoated with 500 $\AA$ of Al$_2$O$_3$. Firstly, the post-deposition annealing was performed at 270$\^{C}$ in a unidirectional magnetic field of 3 kOe to induce the crystallographic transformation of the PtMn layer from a fcc (111) to a fct (111) structure. Secondly, the spin valve films were annealed without magnetic fields and magnetic properties were measured. In Si/A1$_2$O$_3$ (500$\AA$)/Ta(50$\AA$)NiFe(40$\AA$)/CoFe(17$\AA$)/Cu(28$\AA$)/CoFe (30$\AA$)PtMn(200$\AA$)Ta(50$\AA$) top spin valve samples, the MR ratio decreased slowly with increasing annealing temperature up to 325$\^{C}$. But above 325$\^{C}$, the MR ratio decreased rapidly to 1%, due to a collapse of the exchange coupling between a antiferromagnetic layer and a pinned layer with increasing annealing temperature. Also above 325$\^{C}$, the exchange biased field rapidly decreased and the interlayer coupling field rapidly increased with increasing annealing temperature. A change in the interlayer coupling field was resulted from the increase in interface roughness due to Mn-interdiffusion through the grain boundaries. We confirmed the temperature in changing magnetic properties agreed well with the blocking temperature of PtMn based spin valve structure.

  • For an industrial spin-transfer torque (STT) MRAM, low switching current and high thermal stability are required, simultaneously. For this point of view, it is essential to find magnetic materials which satisfy high spin polarization and strong perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA). In this paper, we investigate electronic structures and MCA energies of perovskite $CoFeX_3$ (X = O, F, S, Cl). For X = F and Cl, spin polarization at the Fermi level are 97 % and 96 %, respectively, which are close to a half metal. Furthermore, Co-terminated 5-monolayer (ML) $CoFeX_3$ (X = O, F, S, Cl) films show perpendicular MCA. In particular, the MCA energy of the Co-terminated $CoFeCl_3$ is about 1.0 meV/cell which is three times larger than that of a 5-ML CoFe film. Therefore, we expect to realize a magnetic material with high spin polarization and strong perpendicular MCA energy by utilizing group 6 and 7 elements in the periodic table, and to contribute to commercializing of the STT-MRAM.

  • Top synthetic spin valves wi th structure Ta/NiFe/CoFe/Cu/CoFe(Pl)/Ru/CoFe(P2)/FeMn/Ta on Si (100) substrate with SiO$_2$ of 1500 were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering system. We have changed only the thickness of the free layer and the thickness difference (Pl-P2) in the two ferromagnetic layers separated by Ru, and investigated the effect of magnetic film thickness on the GMR properties and the interlayer coupling field in a spin valve with a synthetic antiferromagnet. As thickness difference of pinned layer was decreased from +25 to -25 , MR ratio was decreased gradually. However, there was a dip zone indicating a big change of MR ratio around Pl = P2, which can be due to the large canting of pinned layers. The modified Neel model was suggested for the top synthetic spin valve to explain the interlayer coupling field according to the thickness change of ferromagnetic layers. The interlayer coupling field was decreased due to the magnetostatic coupling (orange peel coupling) as suggested by model. However, the interlayer coupling field was not explained at the dip zone by the modified Neel model. The deviation of modified Neel model at the dip zone could be due to the largely canting of the pinned layers as well, which depends on different thickness in synthetic antiferromagnetic structure.

  • Top synthetic spin valves with structure Ta/NiFe/CoFe/Cu/CoFe(P1)/Ru/CoFe(P2)/FeMn/Ta on Si(100) substrate with natural oxide were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering system, and investigated on the magnetoresistance properties and effective exchange bias field. As the thickness of FeMn increased above 150 $\AA$, MR ratio was decreased due to the current shunting effect. As the thickness of free layer decreased below 40$\AA$, MR ratio was reduced rapidly. In case of 40 $\AA$ thick of free layer, spin valve film with a structure Si(100)/Ta(50 $\AA$)/NiFe(27 $\AA$)/CoFe(13 $\AA$)/Cu(26 $\AA$)/CoFe(30 $\AA$)/Ru(7 $\AA$)/CoFe(15 $\AA$)/FeMn(100 $\AA$)/Ta(50 $\AA$) exhibited maximum MR ratio of 7.5 % and an effective exchange bias field of 600 Oe, respectively. Thickness difference dependence in this synthetic spin valve structure on effective exchange field was investigated and interpreted by the analytical method. It should be noted that thickness increase of CoFe(P 1) and decrease of CoFe(P2) in synthetic antiferromagnet leaded to the decrease in effective exchange bias field by experimentally and analytically.

  • The improved high-performance Fe-based perovskite-type oxides ($La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}M_xFe_{1-x}O_3$, M = Cu, Cr, Ni) were synthesized by a citrate method and characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD and NMR spectroscopy analyses. The characterization analyses revealed that the stoichiometric amounts of lattice oxygen were existed in all of perovskite samples except for a nickel-doped perovskite. Fe-based perovskites exhibited a surprising result for ortho-para $H_2$ spin conversion reaction, indicating two orders of magnitude higher conversions and conversion rates than commercial $Fe_2O_3$. It was considered that this conversion difference might be attributed to the presence of oxygen vacancies in Fe-based perovskites prepared in this study.

  • We have fabricated phosphorescent white organic light-emitting devices (WOLEDs) with a spin-coated poly(Nvinylcarbazole) [PVK] host layer. Iridium(III) bis[(4,6-difluorophenyl)-pyridinato-N,$C^{2'}$]picolinate (FIrpic), tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(III) [$Ir(ppy)_3$], and tris(2-phenyl-1-quinoline)iridium(III) [$Ir(phq)_3$], were used as the blue, green, and red guest materials, respectively. The PVK was mixed with FIrpic, $Ir(ppy)_3$, and $Ir(phq)_3$ molecules in a chlorobenzene solution and spin-coated in order to prepare the emission layer; 3-(4-biphenylyl)-4-phenyl-5-(4-tertbutylphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole (TAZ) was used as an electron transport material. The resultant device structure was ITO/PVK:FIrpic:$Ir(ppy)_3:Ir(phq)_3$/TAZ/LiF/Al. The electroluminescence, efficiency, and electrical conduction characteristics of the WOLEDs based on the doped PVK host layer were investigated. The maximum current efficiency of the three wavelength WOLED with the doped PVK host was 19.2 cd/A.

  • Nymphaea tetragona, also known as waterlilies, is aquatic plant in the family of Nymphaeceae. Three flavonoids(3, 4, and 5) and one mixed flavonoids were separated from this plant. The mixed flavonoid consisted of two flavonoids; a well-known quercetin(1) and a new natural flavonoid(2). The latter also has two chiral centers and their configurations were established by ROESY experiment. Two glycoflavonoids were determined as isoquercetin and quercetin-3-O-${\beta}$-xyropyranosyl-($1{\rightarrow}2$)-${\beta}$-galactopyroside. The $^1H$ NMR spectra for 4 and 5 dissoloved in $DMSO-d_6$ solvent showed resonance proximity and and severely overlap in the glycoside region, hindering the determination of the configurations of the stereogenic centers of the sugar moieties. This problem was solved through the spin simulation. Here, the exact NMR parameters for the sugar moieties of 4 and 5 were listed.

  • We have studied $CuF_{2}.2H_{2}O$ using $^{1}H$ and $^{19}F$ pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance at 30 MHz. From the data of lineshapes, the spin-lattice relaxation times ($T_1$) and the spin echo decay times, lattice dynamics in the structure is investigated. $T_1$ data from both $^{1}H$ and $^{19}F$ NMR indicate that spin-lattice relaxation is dominated by the paramagnetic ion centers at the Cu sites. The lineshapes at room temperature appear to be strongly affected by exchange narrowing and motional narrowing.

  • An experimental investigation is conducted to find out the large scale coherent structures in the intermediate wake past a rotating cylinder with a single tripping wire attached. Relation between the vortex shedding frequency and the spin rate of rotating cylinder and the effects of the tripping wire on the flow characteristics were studied by using spectral analysis and conditional phase average technique, respectively. It is found that the vortex shedding frequency is bound to a certain range and varies regularly as spin rate increases. The coherent structures are compared with those of the plain rotating cylinder in the case of spin rate of 1.0. Distance between the upper and lower center of vortices increase and the vortex shedding time is delayed, the velocity fluctuation energy decreases near the center line of vortices and it spreads out to the outer region. The Reynolds shear stress increases highly in the upper region and the turbulent wake width expands with strong entrainment process.
