  • Studies were conducted to find out the justification for levee-burning, customarily executed by farmers for long time, Experiments were carried out in farmers fields with levee-burning early in the season, and some pesticides spraying when necessary from 1995 to 1997. Some data collected are analysed and discussed from several available aspects of surroundings. In relation to some results obtained together with some previous evidences, levee-burning seems to have several adverse effects on levee destruction, partial cause of forest fire, and lowering of spider density in the field during fall, without providing any benefit, while causing no signifant effect on weed flora on levee, insect density in the field, and incidence of the rice-blast. Therefore, concequently, it could be recommend that the levee-burning by farmers should not be continued.

  • The fauna of spider species inhabited near paddy fields have been investigated in Chinju and Namhae areas. The spiders collected near the paddy fields in Chinju and Namhae areas were 34 species of 31 genera belonging to 10 families: 34 species on paddy levees; 16 species on barley fields; 17 species on fallow fields; and 18 species on paddy fields. The species diversity was the highest on paddy levee. The dominant species collected from each habitat near the paddy fields were Pardosa astrigera on the paddy levees and barley fields, Pirata subpiraticus on the fallow field, and Pachygnatha clercki on the paddy fields. The spiders inhabited near rice fields can be classified into nine groups based on the ecological and taxonomical characteristics: 1. Pirata spp. 2. Pachygnatha clercki 3. Teridiidae, Erigonidae, Linypidae 4. Tetragnatha spp. 5. Dolomedes surfureus 6. Pardosa spp. 7. Salticidae 8. Thomisidae 9. Clubionidae Among the nine spider groups, the spiders belong to the group 1-5 prefered wet ground or paddy to dry ground, in contrast to the group 6-9 which prefered to live on dry land. The difference of the habitat preference indicated that the former five groups do the important roll as pest predators in paddy, while the latter four group mainly suppress the overwintering pest populations on paddy levees.

  • Three species of the linyphiid genus Walckenaeria, Walckenaeria chikunii Saito and Ono, 2001, Walckenaeria furcillata (Menge, 1869), and Walckenaeria ichifusaensis Saito and Ono, 2001, are reported new to the Korean spider fauna. W. furcillata is widely distributed throughout the Palearctic region, but W. chikunii and W. ichifusaensis are only known from their type localities in Japan. Photographs and illustrations of the diagnostic characters are provided.

  • There are five known species of the genus Tmarus (Thomisidae) in Korea to date: Tmarus horvathi Kulczyn'ski, 1895, Tmarus koreanus Paik, 1973, Tmarus orientalis Schenkel, 1963, Tmarus piger (Walckenaer, 1802) and Tmarus rimosus Paik, 1973. Two females of Tmarus yaginumai Ono, 1977, which was previously only known in Japan, were collected by sweep net between the shrubs at hillocks near the coast of Korea and are described with taxonomic illustrations.

Coras luctuosus (L. • Two Synagelides species, S. agoriformis Boesenberg et Strand, 1906 and S. zhilcovae Proszynski, 1976 from Korea were revised with accurate illustration and identification key. The latter species is newly recorded in the Korean spider fauna. These species can be easily identified by the copulatory openings and the position of the genital organs with copulatory canal and spermatheca.

  • The genus Clubiona Latreille, 1804 is the most diverse and largest one in the family Clubionidae Wagner, 1887. Twenty-nine species of the genus have been described in various ecosystems from Korea to date. Clubiona semicircularis Tang, Song and Zhu, 2005 which was formerly only known in China and Clubiona ansa n. sp. were collected with a sweep net on the foliage of the shrubs in mixed forests from mountains and agricultural landscape during a seasonal survey of the spider fauna in Korea. This study describes these two species with a diagnosis, measurements, and morphological illustrations. In addition, the female of C. semicircularis is described with a diagnosis for the first time from the present study.

  • Pardosa pseudolaevitarsis n. sp. and Hygrolycosa umidicola Tanaka, 1978 belonging to Lycosidae are described from Korea. To date, fourteen species in the genus Pardosa C. L. Koch, 1847 have been described from Korea. H. umidicola belongs to Hygrolycosa Dahl, 1908 was once described from Korea, but the previous description of this species could not provide adequate scientific evidence for adding H. umidicola to the Korean spider fauna. Pardosa pseudolaevitarsis n. sp. is similar to P. laevitarsis Tanaka & Suwa, 1986 in the shape of its epigyne and palp, but can be distinguished by the followings: epigynal atrium small; spermathecae extending to the end of atrium; shape, location and orientation of fertilization duct in epigyne and internal genitalia; blunt basal spur of median apophysis in palp; number, shape and arrangement cheliceral teeth on both margins. Both species were collected using pitfall traps on a ridge between rice fields and seem to prefer habitats with relatively high humidity.

  • Araneidae Clerck, 1757 is one of the largest families within the order Araneae Clerck, 1757, comprising 3,065 species in 177 genera. To date, two species of the genus Mengora O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1889 and four species of the genus Araniella Chamberlin & Ivie, 1942 have been recorded in Korea. During a seasonal survey of the spider fauna in mountainous terrain conducted from 2018 to 2019, females of Mangora foliosa Zhu & Yin, 1998 and a male of Araniella robusta sp. nov. were collected with a sweep net between shrubs in mixed forests from Mt. Juwangsan National Park. In this paper, we provide a diagnosis of the new species and descriptions including measurements and morphological illustrations. The new species, Araniella robusta sp. nov., can be easily distinguished from other species in the genus Araniella Chamberlin & Ivie, 1942 by a branched conductor with two blunt tips and conjugation of the embolus tip and terminal apophysis.
