  • To study the faunal compositiion of spiders as natural enemies of the insect pests and their seasonal fluctuation in paddy fields of Taegu, the survey was carried out 12 times between June and September. 1971. 1. The spiders collected in paddy field of Taegu during the survey period were 45 species of 30 genera of 10 families. 2. In percentage composition the spiders of the genus Pirata were most abundant. Among the other genera, the species of the genus Neoscona, Lycosa, and Marpisa were more abundant in the above-written order. 3. Pirata subpiraticus, Neoscona doenitzi, Lycosa sp., Pardosa T-insignita and Marpisa magister were the 5 major species of abundant spiders. 4. Comparing the spider-fauna of the paddy field of Korea with that of Japan, Taiwan and Thailand, 2 species of 2 genera of the family Gnaphosidae were found in Korea only The abundant and common species It·ere deeply different each other. 5. Pirata subpiraticus, Lycosa sp. and Pardosa T-insignita appeared abundantly between June and July while Neoscona doenitzi and Marpisa magister were few in these periods. But no Pirata subpiraticus, Lycosa sp. and Pardosa T-insignita appeared in August while Neoscona doenitzi and Marpisa magister were abundant in this period. Then, in September as between June and July, Pirata subpiraticus, Lycosa sp. and Pardosa Tinsignita were abundant while Neoscona doenitzi and Marpisa magister decreased.

  • The fauna of spiders in streamsides were surveyed by pitfall trapping at three sites (Gichun-ri, Duckwoo-ri and Haechang-ri) in Paltan-myun in Hwasung areas, Gyeonggi-do. Total 83 spider species and 63 genera belonging to 20 families were identified from 3,128 spiders collected. Species richness and abundance are high in Linyphiidae and Lycosidae and these two groups comprised 60.7% of total collected spiders. Thirty-six species (43.4%) were Iveb builders and 47 species (56.6%) were hunters. This study was the first survey on streamside spiders form Korea and will be valuable in the management of biological resources and description of biodiversity, and augment for utilizing them as a biological control agent in agricultural landscape.

  • The spider fauna of rice fields, marshes, and reclaimed lands was intensively explored in 2015-2022. During the seasonal survey, six Tibellus spiders were collected; two of them, Tibellus fengi Efimik, 1999 and Tibellus japonicus Efimik, 1999, were new to Korean spider fauna and four of them were identified as new species, Tibellus deokjeok sp. nov., Tibellus gimcheon sp. nov., Tibellus sihwa sp. nov., and Tibellus yeongdong sp. nov.. Four new species are similar to each other and known species in the shape of the genital organ and body appearance in both sexes, but can be distinguished from the other Tibellus members by the shape of embolus, conductor, retrolateral tibial apophysis, and ventral tibial apophysis in male and median septum, receptaculum, spermatheca, and copulatory duct in female. The present study taxonomically describes these six Tibellus spiders with diagnoses, measurements, and morphological photos with a key to the Korean Tibellus species.

  • A faunistic study on the spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) from Mt. Jumbong Kangwon-do was carried out from 1996 to 1999. During the survey period, 144 species of 88 genera belonging to 27 families including 5 undetermined species were identified from 900 collecting individuals. The dominant families were Linyphiidae 21 species; 14.6% of total species), Araneidae (20 species, 13.9%), Theridiidae (16 species, 11.1%), and Salticidae 12 species, 8.3%). The composition of the species of web builders was richer than that of hunters. As for species commonness with adjacent countries, the numbers of common species between Mt. Jumbong and Japan, Mt. Jumbong and China, and Mt. Jumbong and Russia were 15 species (80.4%), 98 species (68.5%), and 48 species (33.6%), respectively. The number of common species among these four regions were 39 species (27.3%). So, the spider species composition in Mt. Jumbong seemed being much similar to those in neighbor countries. An outline of biogeographical distribution of spiders can be summarized as 1 Cosmopolitan species (0.7%), 16 Palearctic species (11.2%), 7 Holarctic species (4.9%), 25 Korean endemic species (17.4%) and no Oriental species. In the spider fauna at Mt. Jumbong, therefore, there are high level of occurrence of Korean endemic species with northern spiders as Palearctic and Holarctic species. The level and direction of man-made development may have negative effect on regional biota.

  • A male Spheropistha melanosoma Yaginuma, 1957 from Korea in the family Theridiidae Sundevall, 1833 is described with measurements and morphological photos of the diagnostic characteristics. This species was collected with a sweep net around arable lands in a mountainous mixed forest during the investigation of spider fauna on Ulleungdo Island in 2019.
