  • In this paper, we present an iterative reliability-based modified majority-logic decoding algorithm for two classes of structured low-density parity-check codes. Different from the conventional modified one-step majority-logic decoding algorithms, we design a turbo-like iterative strategy to recover the performance degradation caused by the simply flipping operation. The main computational loads of the presented algorithm include only binary logic and integer operations, resulting in low decoding complexity. Furthermore, by introducing the iterative set, a very small proportion (less than 6%) of variable nodes are involved in the reliability updating process, which can further reduce the computational complexity. Simulation results show that, combined with the factor correction technique and a well-designed non-uniform quantization scheme, the presented algorithm can achieve a significant performance improvement and a fast decoding speed, even with very small quantization levels (3-4 bits resolution). The presented algorithm provides a candidate for trade-offs between performance and complexity.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to understand the operating mechanism of the rock-drill drifter, to explain how to setup an experimental test system and measure the strain of the drifter's rod, and to evaluate the drifter's performance with respect to the impact energy and blow frequency. Methods: The structure of the rock-drill drifter and its operating principle regarding the impact process were analyzed. Static calibration was carried out to calculate the correction factor using a drifter rod as the first step of the experimental test. The impact energy and blow frequency were then calculated based on strain measurements of the drifter's rod. Results: Experimental results showed that the tested drifter elicited a blow frequency of 3330 BPM (Blows Per Minute) and generated impact energy of 170 J/blow. This indicates that the drifter elicits a higher percussion speed and results in a lower impact energy compared to the hydraulic breaker at the same input power. Conclusions: The study proposed methodologies that deal with the experimental setup and the evaluation of the performance of the rock-drill drifter. These methodologies can be extensively used for validating and improving the percussion performance of the drilling equipment.

  • In this paper we present an adaptive method for accelerating conventional Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) for restoration of Passive Millimeter-Wave (PMMW) image from its blurred and noisy version. MEM is nonlinear and its convergence is very slow. We present a new method to accelerate the MEM by using an exponent on the correction ratio. In this method the exponent is computed adaptively in each iteration, using first-order derivatives of deblurred image in previous two iterations. Using this exponent the accelerated MEM emphasizes speed at the beginning stages and stability at later stages. In accelerated MEM the non-negativity is automatically ensured and also conservation of flux without additional computation. Simulation study shows that the accelerated MEM gives better results in terms of RMSE, SNR, moreover, it takes only about 46% lesser iterations than conventional MEM. This is also confirmed by applying this algorithm on actual PMMW image captured by 94 GHz mechanically scanned radiometer.

  • Because of capacity of the electric power equipment grew larger and the electric power system was complicated, it was required a protocol to process data without the errors in order to supply the high quality and stable electric power. However, HDLC and TCP/IP communication protocol using between Seoul EMS and Kwangju RCC (or between RCC and SCC) is decreasing reliability by the delay of speed and the occurrence of errors. In this paper, we applied ICCP(Inter-Control Center Communication Protocol) communication protocol in order to improve them and implemented an electric power communication system for remote control of the electric power equipment. Also, we modified program for error correction and implemented the system using the most suitable BLT. The errors were more decreased in case of ICCP protocol than HDLC protocol and TCP/IP protocol applied to the electric power communication system.

  • As reducing the physical size of devices, we can integrate more devices per the unit chip area and make its speed better. We have investigated MOSFET built on an epitaxial layer(EPI) of a heavily-doped ground plane. We compared and analyzed the characteristics of such device structure, i.e., impact ionization, electric field and I-V characteristics curve with lightly-doped drain(LDD) MOSFET. We simulated MOSFET with gate lengths from 0.10 to 0.06${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ step 0.01${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in according to constant voltage scaling theory.

  • HEVC (high efficiency video coding) exploits CABAC (context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding) for entropy coding, where a context model estimates the probability for each syntax element. In this paper, a context modeler was designed and implemented for CABAC decoding. lookup table was used to reduce computation and to increase speed. 12 simulations for HEVC standard test sequences and encoder configurations were performed, and the context modeler was verified to perform correction operations. The designed context modeler was synthesized in 0.18um technology. Maximum frequency, maximum throughput, and gate count are 200 MHz, 200 Mbin/s, and 29,268 gates, respectively.

  • This paper describes a circuit-level optimization of DFU(decoding function unit) for LDPC decoder which is used in wireless communication systems such as WiMAX and WLAN. The conventional DFU which is based on min-sum decoding algorithm needs conversions between two's complement values and sign-magnitude values, resulting in complex hardware. In this paper, a new design of DFU that is based on sign-magnitude arithmetic is proposed to achieve a simplified circuit and high-speed operation.

  • Recently Digital-TachoGraph(DTG) was mounted mandatorily in commercial vehicles(Taxi, Bus, etc.). DTG records accurate and detailed information of the running state of vehicles related to traffic accident, such as Time, Distance, Velocity, RPM, Brake ON/OFF, GPS, Azimuth, Acceleration. Thus those standardized data can play an important role in traffic accident investigation and reconstruction. To develope the accurate and objective method using the DTG data for the reconstruction of traffic accident, we had conducted several tests such as driving test, high speed circuit test, braking test, slalom test at Korea Automobile Testing & Research Institute(KATRI), and collision test at Korea Automobile insurance repair Research and Training center(KART) with the vehicle equipped with several DTG. Development of the program which enables the reading and analysis of the DTG data was followed. In the experiments, we have found velocity error, RPM error, brake signal error and azimuth error in several products, and also non-continuous event data. The cause of these errors was deduced to be related to the correction factor, the durability of electronic parts and the algorithm.

  • Images and Videos that include the human face contain a lot of information. Therefore, accurately extracting human face is a very important issue in the field of computer vision. However, in real life, human faces have various shapes and textures. To adapt to these variations, A model-based approach is one of the best ways in which unknown data can be represented by the model in which it is built. However, the model-based approach has its weaknesses when the motion between two frames is big, it can be either a sudden change of pose or moving with fast speed. In this paper, we propose an enhanced human face-tracking model. This approach included human face detection and motion estimation using Cascaded Convolutional Neural Networks, and continuous human face tracking and modeling correction steps using the Active Appearance Model. A proposed system detects human face in the first input frame and initializes the models. On later frames, Cascaded CNN face detection is used to estimate the target motion such as location or pose before applying the old model and fit new target.
