  • According to the National Statistical Office and the Ministry of Health and Welfare Family Department, Korea has already estimated that the proportion of the elderly population aged 65 or over is estimated to be higher than the global average, and has already entered the "Aging Society". Moreover, it is estimated that the quality of life of the people improved by reaching the information society earlier than expected. However, unlike young people, elderly people show clear differences in access and use of information that is difficult to access new machines easily and cause intergenerational digital divide phenomenon. In order to solve such a phenomenon, we implemented a speech recognition based smart mirror system for elderly people. The installed system can provide lighting control, weather forecast and subway time information search service of the using voice recognition. Through the implemented system, it is expected that the elderly will have accessibility to new machines, information that gives a feeling of participating in the change of the new era will be obtained and the effect of living convenience will be expected.

  • In this paper, a SBC(sub-band-coding) is proposed to code a speech signal for a digital mobile radio and a robustness of speech quality of the SBC over the Rayleigh fading channel is investigated via a computer simulation. First the Rayleigh fading channel and 16-ary DPSK receiver models are presentes and verified its validitties by comparing with theoretical values. Three different measures: SNR, LPC distance measure and subjective listening test, were used to evaluate the effects due to the Rayleigh fading channel errors. From the results of computer simulation at BER=$10_{-3}$, $10_{-2}$, 5$ imes$$10_{-2}$, it was found that the speech remained quite intelligible at BER=$10_{-2}$and the link is still usuable even at BER=5$ imes$$10_{-2}$ Thus it was concluded that the SBC can be applicable to the digital mobile radio on the Rayleigh fading channel error in the range of $10_{-4}$~$10_{-2}$ without emplowing any error correction codes.

  • A large number of current language processing systems use a part-of-speech tagger for preprocessing. Most language processing systems required a tagger with the highest possible accuracy. Specially, the use of domain-specific advantages has become a hot issue in machine translation community to improve the translation quality. This paper addresses a method for customizing an HMM or LHMM based English tagger from general domain to specific domain. The proposed method is to semi-automatically customize the output and transition probabilities of HMM or LHMM using domain-specific raw corpus. Through the experiments customizing to Patent domain, our LHMM tagger adapted by the proposed method shows the word tagging accuracy of 98.87% and the sentence tagging accuracy of 78.5%. Also, compared with the general tagger, our tagger improved the word tagging accuracy of 2.24% (ERR: 66.4%) and the sentence tagging accuracy of 41.0% (ERR: 65.6%).

  • This study aimed to investigate the relationship between overt and covert characteristics of stuttering. This study included 10 adult participants who stutter. To analyze the overt characteristics, stuttering frequency, duration of stuttering moments, concomitant behaviors, and total score were scored based on the Stuttering Severity Instrument-Fourth Edition (SSI-4). Additionally, the modified Erickson scale of communication attitudes (S-24) and the Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering for Adults (OASES-A; general information, reactions to stuttering, communication in daily situations, quality of life, and total score) were used to determine the covert characteristics. Correlation analyses showed no significant association between the overt and covert variables. However, there were significant correlations between the scores on the S-24 and the OASES-A. These findings support the perspective that the overt characteristics of stuttering do not predict the covert characteristics, and vice versa. Therefore, when evaluating and intervening with adults who stutter, it is important to consider these characteristics separately.

  • This paper describes the subjective assessment of the multi-channel audio quality according to the bitrate changing and evaluates the predistortion effect to avoid the unmasked noise after matrixing/dematrxing process in transmission and regeneration of the multi-channel audio. The simulation is processed by the perceptual coding that is MPEG-2 Audio layer II algorithm. We evaluate the quality improvement about predistortion using or not by 384, 320, 256, 128kbps. As the result of the double blind subjective assessment, 5 Grade-Impairment Scale is scored under minus one to 320kbps and so audio quality is evaluated to be perceptible, but not annoying in 3/2 channel. The effect of the predistortion is improved one level in 128kbps and especially speech test material I better improved than music test materials.

  • Tonsillectomy is the one of operation that is performed the most commonly in otolaryngology field. Many changes that include range of voice, tone, voice quality and resonance were made by tonsillectomy. Sometimes, any patients taken tonsillectomy has suffer from these voice problem after tonsillectomy. However there are less study for these problems until now. Then, we studied to find the anatomical findings that affected the voice quality when tonsillectomy was performed. We evaluated the voice in 2 groups, one is the group showed the normal pharyngeal space by using the transnasal fiberscopy, the other is group showed medially bulging tonsil at pharyngeal cavity by using same method, with perceptual evaluation, nasalance score, nasality, oral formant and nasal formant. We used the computerized speech analysis system, the nasometer and the spectrogram in the CSL program. We could not find any differences in perceptual evaluation between two groups. But objective measures were provided. Nasalance score and nasality on the nasometric analysis were increased significantly and oral formant on the spectrogram was changed singnificantly after tonsillectomy in Group 2. Authors thought medially bulging tonsil in the pharynx is able to affect the voice quality after tonsillectomy when we evaluted through the nasal cavity by the using of fiberscopy and this evaluation would be important especially in singers.

  • Background and Objectives This study was to investigate the voice quality and articulation effects of laryngeal massage on muscle tension dysphonia (MTD). Materials and Method A systematic review of articles published between January 2000 and December 2020 in Cochrane, PubMed, ScienceDirect, SpingerLink, ERIC, and Naver Academic was conducted. From the total of 2094 articles identified, 10 peer-reviewed articles were included in a meta-analysis. Mean effect sizes of the variables related to voice quality (jitter, shimmer, harmonic to noise ratio or noise to harmonic ratio, high-F0, low-I, cepstral peak prominence) and articulation (F1, F2, F1 slope, F2 slope) were calculated by Hedges'g. Results Meta-analysis of the selected articles showed that laryngeal massage had medium to large effects on all variables of voice quality and articulation except F0-high and F1 slope in the MTD patients. Conclusion This study provided comprehensive clinical evidence that it is highly desirable to apply laryngeal massage to MTD patients.
