A Sound Externalization Method for Realistic Audio Rendering in a Headphone Listening Environment (헤드폰 청취환경에서의 실감 오디오 재현을 위한 음상 외재화 기법)

  • In this paper, a sound externalization method is proposed for out-of-the-head localization in a headphone listening environment. In order to reduce timbre distortion by the conventional methods using a measured a head-related transfer function (HRTF) or early reflections, the proposed method integrates a model-based HRTF with reverberation. In addition, for improving frontal externalization performance, techniques such as decorrelation and spectral notch filtering are included. To evaluate the performance of the proposed externalization method, subjective listening tests are conducted by using different types of sound sources such as white noise, sound effects, speech, and music. It is shown from the test results that the proposed externalization method can localize sound sources farther away from out of the head than the conventional method.

Noise Statistics Estimation Using Target-to-Noise Contribution Ratio for Parameterized Multichannel Wiener Filter (변수내장형 다채널 위너필터를 위한 목적신호대잡음 기여비를 이용한 잡음추정기법)

  • Parameterized multichannel Wiener filter (PMWF) is a linear filter that can control the trade-off between residual noise and signal distortion using the embedded parameter. To apply the PMWF to noisy inputs, accurate noise estimation is important and multichannel minima-controlled recursive averaging (MMCRA) is widely used. However, in the case of the MMCRA, the accuracy of noise estimation decreases when a directional interference is involved into the array inputs. Consequently, the performance of the PMWF is degraded. Therefore, we propose a noise power spectral density (PSD) estimation method for the PMWF in this paper. The proposed method is based on a consecutive process of eigenvalue decomposition on noisy input PSD, estimation of the target component contribution using directional information, and exponential weighting for improved estimation of the target contribution. For evaluation, four objective measures were compared with the MMCRA and we verify that the PMWF with the proposed noise estimation method can improve performance in environments where directional interfereces exist.

Neonatal hearing screening in a neonatal intensive care unit using distortion product otoacoustic emissions (변조 이음향방사(DPOAE)를 이용한 고위험군 신생아 청각선별검사)

  • Purpose : Early detection and intervention of hearing impairment is believed to improve speech and language development and behavior of children. The aim of this preliminary study was to determine the prevalence of hearing impairments, and to identify the association of risk factors relating to refer response in high risk neonates who were screened using distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE). Methods : The subjects included 871 neonates who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of the Pediatric Department in Soonchunhyang University Bucheon Hospital from May, 2001 to December, 2004. They were screened using DPOAE. Based on DPOAE, we divided the neonates in two groups : 'Pass' and 'Refer'. The differences in risk factors between the pass group and the refer group were analyzed. Results : The incidence of the refer group was 12.1 percent(106 out of 871). The bilateral refer rate was 5.4 percent(47 out of 871). And the unilateral refer rate was 6.7 percent(59 out of 871). Gender, birth place, family history of hearing loss, small/large for gestational age, obstetrical factor, hyperbilirubinemia and use of gentamicin were not statistically related to the refer rate. Statistically related to refer rate were birth weight, resuscitated neonates, Apgar score, craniofacial anomaly, mechanical ventilator application, sepsis, using of vancomycin(P<0.05). The prevalence of hearing impairment (${\geq}60dB$) in this study was 2 percent(18 out of 871). Conclusion : This study showed a higher prevalence of hearing impairment in high-risk neonates. Thus neonatal hearing screening should be carried out in high-risk neonates.

A Study Model Analysis of Complete Unilateral Cleft Lip & Palate Patients (편측성 완전 구순 구개열 환자의 구개열 형태 및 치궁의 분석)

  • The aim of treatment of cleft lip and palate is to correct the cleft and associated problems surgically and thus hide the anomaly so that patients can lead normal lives. This correction involves surgically producing a face that does not attract attention, a vocal apparatus that permits intelligible speech, and a dentition that allows optimal function and esthetics. In neonatal periods, gross distortion of tissues surrounding the cleft requires considerable effort and time due to post operative functional defect and scarring and induces milk feeding problem, malocclusion of deciduous or permanent dentition, congenital missing teeth, skeletal dysplasia. The occurrence of a cleft deformity is a source of considerable shock to the parents of an afflicted baby, and the most appropriate approach is very important things. Thus we tried to analysis of dental arch, shape and size of deformity in cleft patients. The results were obtained as follows. 1. When the cast measurements of UCLP subjects at first visit it was found that the mean length was 9.29mm at the alveolar cleft width, also that was 11.7mm at the anterior width and 14mm at the posterior cleft width. 2. Comparison of UCLP group at first visit and just lip surgery, it was found that the older group showed a insignificant reduction in the width of the cleft in the alveolar, canine, and tuberosity regions. 3. The maxillary casts of the UCLP group at 6 months differ Significantly from those of the at 3 months in both length and width. but there was no statistical difference except anterior ridge length of nonclefted site. 4. Comparison at 6 months and 18 months, there was a greater change in length of the alveolar cleft width, intercanine width, and anterior cleft width. Maxillary arch became wider at both the canine region and intertuberosity region. also posterior anteroposterior length was increased but anterior AP length was decreased from 8.1mm to 7.7mm. A Study about the Users's Preferred Playing Speeds on Categorized Video Content using WSOLA method (WSOLA를 이용한 동영상 미세배속 재생 서비스에 대한 콘텐츠별 배속 선호도 분석 연구)

  • In a fast-paced information technology environment, consumption of video content is changing from one-way television viewing to VOD (Video on Demand) playing anywhere, anytime, on any device. This video-watching trend gives additional importance to videos with fine-speed-control, in addition to the strength of the digital video signal. Currently, many video players provide a fine-speed-control function which can speed up the video to skip a boring part, or slow it down to focus on an exciting scene. The audio information is just as important as the visual information for understanding the content of the speed-controlled video. Thus, a number of algorithms for fine-speed-control video-playing technologies have been proposed to solve the pitch distortion in the audio-processing area. In this study, well-known techniques for prosodic modification of speech signals, WSOLA (Waveform-Similarity-Based Overlap-Add), have been applied to analyze users' needs for fine-speed-control video playing. By surveying the users' preferred speeds on categorized video content and analyzing the results, this paper proposes that various fine-speed adjustments are needed to accommodate users' preferred video consumption.

Derivation of Asymptotic Formulas for the Signal-to-Noise Ratio of Mismatched Optimal Laplacian Quantizers (불일치된 최적 라플라스 양자기의 신호대잡음비 점근식의 유도)

  • The paper derives asymptotic formulas for the MSE distortion and the signal-to-noise ratio of a mismatched fixed-rate minimum MSE Laplacian quantizer. These closed-form formulas are expressed in terms of the number N of quantization points, the mean displacement $\mu$, and the ratio $\rho$ of the standard deviation of the source to that for which the quantizer is optimally designed. Numerical results show that the principal formula is accurate in that, for rate R=$log_2N{\geq}6$, it predicts signal-to-noise ratios within 1% of the true values for a wide range of $\mu$, and $\rho$. The new findings herein include the fact that, for heavy variance mismatch of ${\rho}>3/2$, the signal-to-noise ratio increases at the rate of $9/\rho$ dB/bit, which is slower than the usual 6 dB/bit, and the fact that an optimal uniform quantizer, though optimally designed, is slightly more than critically mismatched to the source. It is also found that signal-to-noise ratio loss due to $\mu$ is moderate. The derived formulas can be useful in quantization of speech or music signals, which are modeled well as Laplacian sources and have changing short-term variances.

An Hwak's Recognition of 'Joseon' and 'Joseon Cheolhak' (안확의 '조선' 인식과 '조선철학')

  • The full-scaled study of Joseon conducted by Japan in the 1910s was part of its colonial policy, while the native Joseon studies against it contained political aspiration to recover the national rights and independence. Accordingly, the conceptual meaning of 'Joseon' varied according to its subject of speech. The establishment of modern nation-state failed along with the extinction of Korean Empire, but 'Joseon' was newly discovered within national ideology. It became a historical concept in which the experience of the past and the expectation toward the future could be united. The so-called 'Joseon Studies' was only limited to intellectuals in the academic circle, but 'Joseon' embraced the articulations from more various social agents. Furthermore, it is only natural that 'Joseon Studies' should be interpreted within the historical semantics of 'Joseon', considering the connection between concept and discourse. In his The History of Joseon Civilization, An Hwak encompassed the history from the times of ancient mythology to the contemporary times under the banner of 'Joseon'. Opposing Japanese distortion of history carried out in the name of historical positivism, he idealized Joseon history as comparable to that of the Western democracy. He extended the study of 'Joseon' into culture at large, foreshadowing a kind of Joseon philosophy. In his An Overview of Joseon Philosophical Ideas, the first description of 'Joseon philosophy' as an independent field, he proposed philosophy as one of three sources of pride in Joseon and asserted its uniqueness and originality compared to the West. It was an attempt to grasp the peculiarity of Joseon ideas from a perspective of the history of universal human civilization. He considered 'Jong'(倧) as an ideological foundation held from the ancient to the modern times, and the acceptance of Buddhism and Confucianism as beneficial to 'Joseon philosophy'. The birth of 'Joseon philosophy', the modern transformation of the traditional knowledge system, was an intellectual experiment to apply traditional knowledge to the modern disciplinary classification system.
