  • We have fabricated and evaluated a new Si pin photodetector for APF optical link. The fabricated device has the $p^{+}$-guard ring around the metal-semiconductor contact and the web patterned $p^{+}$-shallow diffused region in the light absorbing area. From the measurements of electo-optical characteristics under the bias of -5 V, the junction capacitance of 4 pF and the dark current of 180 pA were obtained. The optical signal current of 1.22 $\mu$A and the responsivity of 0.55 A/W were obtained when the 2.2 $\mu$W optical power with peak wavelength of 670 nm was incident on the device. The fabricated device showed the maximum spectral response in a spectrum of 650-700 nm. It is expected that the fabricated device can be very useful for detecting the optical signal in the application of red light optics.

  • Seismic ground motion can vary significantly over distances comparable to the length of a majority of highway bridges on multiple supports. This paper presents results of fragility analysis of two actual highway bridges under ground motion with spatial variation. Ground motion time histories are artificially generated with different amplitudes, phases, as well as frequency contents at different support locations. Monte Carlo simulation is performed to study dynamic responses of the bridges under these ground motions. The effect of spatial variation on the seismic response is systematically examined and the resulting fragility curves are compared with those under identical support ground motion. This study shows that ductility demands for the bridge columns can be underestimated if the bridge is analyzed using identical support ground motions rather than differential support ground motions. Fragility curves are developed as functions of different measures of ground motion intensity including peak ground acceleration(PGA), peak ground velocity(PGV), spectral acceleration(SA), spectral velocity(SV) and spectral intensity(SI). This study represents a first attempt to develop fragility curves under spatially varying ground motion and provides information useful for improvement of the current seismic design codes so as to account for the effects of spatial variation in the seismic design of long-span bridges.

  • This paper deals with accuracy of accumulated fatigue damage estimation using stochastic fatigue analysis method based on Rayleigh PDF. From full scale measurement data on an 8100TEU container vessel, zero-order spectral moments for wave- and vibration-induced energy spectral densities are determined on the probability level of 99%. 80 simulation cases in total are prepared according to the variation of ratio of zero-order spectral moments and center frequency of vibration ESD. By using inverse Fourier transformation and rainflow cycle counting for the combined ESD of wave and vibration, exact fatigue damages are derived. Fatigue damages in frequency domain based on Rayleigh PDF show large conservativeness compared to exact fatigue damages in times domain. The main cause of the excessive conservativeness is analyzed by two aspects: ratio of zero crossing and peak frequencies and ratio of initial zero order spectral moments and zero order spectral moments from rainflow stress range distributions. Finally, a guideline of applicability of Rayleigh PDF is proposed for wide band processes.

CdS : In 박막의 spectral response의 peak는 상온에서 500nm이다. CdS : In 광전도 cell의 sensitivity ${\gamma}$ =0.77이고, 최대 허용소비전력은 p=120mW, 100lux에서 rise time은 8 msec, decay time 은 6 msec이다.

  • The effect of different plasma surface preparation and oxidation processes for the formation of $SiO_2-Si$(100) interfaces was studied using angle resolved uv-photoelectron spectroscopy. The surface preparation processes included ex situ preclean as well as in situ hydrogen plasma, which were compared to the processes of UHV annealing at high temperature. The spectral position of the oxide valence band features, with respect to the Fermi level. Were found to shift according to the different processes of surface preparation and oxidation. The shifts were analyzed in terms of band bending in the Si. Origins of the spectral shifts were considered to include defects at the $SiO_2Si$ interfaces and surface morphology(roughness) dependent on the surface preparation processes. From comparison of the ARUPS results of the various processes, it was concluded that the interface bonding of the silicon oxide-showed the lowest band bending.

  • The parameters of the modified BM and JONSWAP spectra are estimated using spectral data set off Namhangjin, located in the east coast of Korea, collected during high wave events. The parameters of the modified BM spectrum were estimated to be 1.04 and 0.27, which were similar to the conventional values of 1.098 and 0.30, but showed significant differences in statistical terms. On the other hand, the peak enhancement factor of JONSWAP spectrum was estimated to be 1.4, which was substantially small compared to the conventional value of 3.3. The RMSE differences from the fitted results of the two spectra were small, approximately 0.2. In the frequency range greater than the peak frequency, however, the spectral energy density showed relatively mild decrease with increase of the frequency, compared to the standard forms of the modified BM and JONSWAP spectra.

  • This study aims to develop ensemble machine learning (ML) models for estimating the peak floor acceleration and maximum top drift of steel moment frames. For this purpose, random forest, adaptive boosting, gradient boosting regression tree (GBRT), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) models were considered. A total of 621 steel moment frames were analyzed under 240 ground motions using OpenSees software to generate the dataset for ML models. From the results, the GBRT and XGBoost models exhibited the highest performance for predicting peak floor acceleration and maximum top drift, respectively. The significance of each input variable on the prediction was examined using the best-performing models and Shapley additive explanations approach (SHAP). It turned out that the peak ground acceleration had the most significant impact on the peak floor acceleration prediction. Meanwhile, the spectral accelerations at 1 and 2 s had the most considerable influence on the maximum top drift prediction. Finally, a graphical user interface module was created that places a pioneering step for the application of ML to estimate the seismic demands of building structures in practical design.

  • Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a modulation technique that allows the transmission of high data rates over wideband radio channels subject to frequency selective fading by dividing the data into several narrowband and flat fading channels. OFDM has high spectral efficiency and channel robustness. However, a major drawback of OFDM is that the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the transmitted signals is high, which causes nonlinear distortion in the received data and reduces the efficiency of the high power amplifier in the transmitter. The most straightforward method to solve this problem is to use a nonlinear mapping algorithm to transform the signal into a new signal that has a smaller PAPR. One of the latest nonlinear methods proposed to reduce the PAPR is the $L_2$-by-3 algorithm, which is based on the discrete sliding norm transform. In this paper, a new algorithm based on the $L_2$-by-3 method is proposed. The proposed method is very simple and has a low complexity analysis. Simulation results show that the proposed method performs better, has better power spectral density, and is less sensitive to the modulation type and number of subcarriers than $L_2$-by-3.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for recovering the colors of objects from multiple near-infrared (near-IR) images. The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) color coordinates of objects are recovered from a series of gray images captured under multiple spectral near-IR illuminations using polynomial regression. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm is tested experimentally by using 24 color patches of the Color Rendition Chart. The experimental apparatus is composed of a monochrome digital camera without an IR cut-off filter and a custom-designed LED illuminator emitting multiple spectral near-IR illuminations, with peak wavelengths near the red edge of the visible band, namely at 700, 740, 780, and 860 nm. The average color difference between the original and the recovered colors for all 24 patches was found to be 11.1. However, if some particular patches with high value are disregarded, the average color difference is reduced to 4.2, and this value is within the acceptability tolerance for complex image on the display.

  • This study investigated the perceptual and cepstral/spectral characteristics of phonation and their relationships in dysarthria in connected speech. Twenty-two participants were divided into two groups; the eleven dysarthric speakers were paired with matching age and gender healthy control participants. A perceptual evaluation was performed by three speech pathologists using the GRBAS scale to measure the cepstrual/spectral characteristics of phonation between the two groups' connected speech. Correlations showed dysarthric speakers scored significantly worse (with a higher rating) with severities in G (overall dysphonia grade), B (breathiness), and S (strain), while the smoothed prominence of the cepstral peak (CPPs) was significantly lower. The CPPs were significantly correlated with the perceptual ratings, including G, B, and S. The utility of CPPs is supported by its high relationship with perceptually rated dysphonia severity in dysarthric speakers. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that the threshold of 5.08 dB for the CPPs achieved a good classification for dysarthria, with 63.6% sensitivity and the perfect specificity (100%). Those results indicate the CPPs reliably distinguished between healthy controls and dysarthric speakers. However, the CPP frequency (CPP F0) and low-high spectral ratio (L/H ratio) were not significantly different between the two groups.
