Cognitive radio, which is designed to dynamically adapt its transmission to the environments, is believed to be one of the fundamental techniques for future spectrum utilization. As the first step of cognitive radio, spectrum sensing is treated as the most important technique, through which cognition is well explained. In this paper, we propose a spectral correlation based detection method for spectrum sensing. An unlicensed secondary user system operating in TV broadcast bands is taken as an example. Based on the cyclostationarity of communication signals, spectral correlation function is used to minimize the effect of random noise and interference. Energy measurement and peak detection based criteria are proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed detection method outperforms the energy detection and is more suitable for spectrum sensing in cognitive radios.
We consider here the problem of spectral estimation of multidimensional wide sense stationary (WSS) random process. A method, employing a special difference equation of correlation function, is proposed to solve the problem of multidimensional spectral estimation. In this approach, the special difference equation of correlation function is derived by modal decomposition method. Maximum likelihood estimator and Kalman filter are used to estimate the model parameters of the difference equation and the decomposed spectral residues. An algorithm is presented to estimate the multidimensional spectral density. According to the result of the simulation, these methods are feasible to estimate the spectral density of WSS process, which is realized by finite dimensional multivariable lineal system driven by white noise.

The eccentric rotor system has various problems by vibration of unbalance mass. Specially, it is difficult to analyze vibration problem for the drum washing machine due to correlation of transmission paths. We analyze the mechanical structure by multidimensional spectral density to identify the maximum vibration magnitude at the frequency domain. It estimates the coherence function of the signals to pass the transmission paths. In case of the drum washing machine, because the transmission paths are correlated partially it needs to determinate the priority ranking. And the correlated parts are eliminated using conditioned spectral density function. Finally the shielding effect method confirms the reasonability of the modeling.

Jamming countermeasures are used to decrease or prevent the impact of intentional jamming applied to degrade the quality of information provided by a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver. The maximum performance of jamming countermeasure can be obtained only when a proper technique is applied according to the type of jammer. This paper suggests a jamming identification technique for providing information regarding the type of jamming. The center frequency and bandwidth of jammer signal are inconsistent and may change according to time, and thus a spectral correlation function and wavelet coherence were considered in order to analyze the signal in the time and frequency space. Because the two characteristics derive different analysis results, two different identification techniques were suggested and the performances thereof were analyzed. Numerical results show that the two identification techniques have relative advantages and disadvantages as to time consumed and performance. The suggested methods can sufficiently identify the jammer before the GNSS receiver becomes inoperable because of jamming.
We have investigated the long term variability of the intensities of the broad-line region emission lines in the UV spectra of Seyfert I galaxy NGC 5548 from 1973-1996. We have obtained the following results: 1) a high level correlation between the intensities of emission lines as well as between intensities of emission lines and continuum fluxes was discovered. With increasing wavelength the correlation in both cases becomes weaker, 2) the relationship between the intensity of emission lines and the flux radiation in the continuum can be expressed by a power law function with coefficients of ${\alpha}{\approx}0.8-1.1$ for different lines. When the difference between the wavelengths of spectral lines and the continuum is increased, the value of the power function decreases, and 3) it was found that the magnitude of the variability of the line intensities are weaker than the range of variability of the continuum fluxes. The magnitude of the variability of the line intensities and the continuum fluxes increase at longer wavelengths.

Ground motion models predict the mean and standard deviation of the logarithm of spectral acceleration, as a function of predictor variables such as earthquake magnitude, distance and site condition. Such models have been developed for a variety of seismic environments throughout the world. Some calculations, such as the Conditional Mean Spectrum calculation, use this information but additionally require knowledge of correlation coefficients between logarithmic spectral acceleration values at multiple periods. Such correlation predictions have, to date, been developed primarily from data recorded in the Western United States from active shallow crustal earthquakes. This paper describes results from a study of spectral acceleration correlations from Japanese earthquake ground motion data that includes both crustal and subduction zone earthquakes. Comparisons are made between estimated correlations for Japanese response spectral ordinates and correlation estimates developed from Western United States ground motion data. The effect of ground motion model, earthquake source mechanism, seismic zone, site conditions, and source to site distance on estimated correlations is evaluated and discussed. Confidence intervals on these correlation estimates are introduced, to aid in identifying statistically significant differences in correlations among the factors considered. Observed general trends in correlation are similar to previous studies, with the exception of correlation of spectral accelerations between orthogonal components, which is seen to be higher here than previously observed. Some differences in correlations between earthquake source zones and earthquake mechanisms are observed, and so tables of correlations coefficients for each specific case are provided.
Considerable experience has been reported on the use of spectral data to measure the canopy biomass of dryland grain crops and the use of these estimates to forecast subsequent grain yield. These basic procedures were retested to assess the use of the general process to forecasting grain yield for paddy rice. The use of the ratio of a multiband radiometer simulation of Thematic Mapper band 4(.76 to .90 .mu.m) divided by band 3 (.63 to .69 .mu.m) was tested to estimate the canopy biomass of paddy rice as a function of the stage of development of the rice. The correlation was found to be greatest (R = .94) at panicle differentiation about midway through the development cycle of the rice canopy. The use of this ratio of two spectral bands as a surrogate for canopy biomass was then tested for its correlation against final grain yield. These spectral estimates of canopy biomass produced the highest correlations with final grain yield (R = .87) when measured at the canopy development stages of panicle differentiation and heading. The impact of varying the amounts of supplemental nitrogen on the use of spectral measuremants of canopy biomass to estimate grain yield was also determined. The effect of the development of a significant amount of weed biomass in the rice canopy was also clearly detected.

The application of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has recently attracted considerable interest in various areas. A three-dimensional multiple-input multiple-output concentric two-hemisphere model is proposed to characterize the scattering environment around a vehicle in an urban UAV-to-vehicle communication scenario. Multipath components of the model consisted of lineof-sight and single-bounced components. This study focused on the key parameters that determine the scatterer distribution. A time-variant process was used to analyze the nonstationarity of the proposed model. Vital statistical properties, such as the space-time-frequency correlation function, Doppler power spectral density, level-crossing rate, average fade duration, and channel capacity, were derived and analyzed. The results indicated that with an increase in the maximum scatter radius, the time correlation and level-crossing rate decreased, the frequency correlation function had a faster downward trend, and average fade duration increased. In addition, with the increase of concentration parameter, the time correlation, space correlation, and level-crossing rate increased, average fade duration decreased, and Doppler power spectral density became flatter. The proposed model was compared with current geometry-based stochastic models (GBSMs) and showed good consistency. In addition, we verified the nonstationarity in the temporal and spatial domains of the proposed model. These conclusions can be used as references in the design of more reasonable communication systems.
The various spectral density functions of wind are applied in the wind process simulation by the spectral representation method. In view of the spectral density functions, the characteristics of the simulated processes are compared. The ensemble spectral density functions constructed from the simulated sample processes are revealed to have the similarity not only in global shape but also in the maximum values with the target spectral density functions with a high accuracy. For the correlation structure to be satisfied in the circumferential direction on the cooling tower shell, a new formula is suggested based on the mathematical expression representing the circumferential distribution of the wind pressure on the cooling tower shell. The simulated wind processes are applied in the dynamic analysis of cooling tower shell in the time domain and the fluctuating stochastic behavior of the cooling tower shell is investigated.
