  • Recent trends in the construction of building frame feature the increase use of composite steel concrete members functioning together in what terms of mixed structural systems. One of such systems, RCS(reinforced concrete column and steel beam) system is introduced and closely examined focusing on bearing strength of the composite joint in this paper. The main objective of this study was to develope one of details to increase bearing capacity while bearing failure is one of the two primary modes of failure in RCS system. Local bearing tests with specimens about 1/3 of the actual concrete column size were performed applying uniform load through steel plate with 100$\times$110mm size. Test results show that specimens with the bearing reinforcement detail developed in this study enhanced the bearing strength by 1.71~3.02 compared to concrete cylinder strength.

  • In the nano/micro scale, material properties are dependent on the size-scale of a structure. However, conventional micro-scale tensile tests have limitations to obtain reliable values of nano-scale material properties owing to residual stress and elastic slippage in the gripping/aligning process. The indenter-driven nano-scale tensile test provides prominent advantages simple testing device, high-quality nano-scale metallic specimen with negligible residual stress. In this paper, two-types of specimens (a specimen with multi-testing parts and a specimen with a single-testing part) are discussed. Focused ion beam (FIB) is employed to fabricate a nano-scale specimen from a thin nickel film. Using the specimen with a single-testing part, we obtained a nano-scale stress-strain curve of electroplated nickel film.

  • Two kinds of alumina specimens with different grain size (1 and 51 $\mu\textrm{m}$) but same density were prepared by hot-pressing. Fracture strength and fracture toughness of these specimens at low strain rate, sonic velocity, and elastic property were evaluated. Ballistic performance against Cal. 50 AP projectile was characterized by thick-backing method by using A16061-T6 reference block. Mechanical properties measured at low strain rate showed that the specimen with samll grain (SG) were better than specimen with large grain (LG). Fracture strength and fracture toughness of LG specimen were 131 MPa and 3.01 MPa{{{{ SQRT { m} }}, but those of SG specimen were 349 and 4.23, respectively. Sonic velocity and elastic properties of these specimen were similar, but bulk velocity and bulk modulus were different at amount of 4 and 9%. The tendency of ballistic performance was not consistent with the mechnaical properties at low strain rate. The ballistic performance based on quantitative efficiency revealed that the LG specimen (5.13) was ballistically better than the SG specimen (4.00) in spite of their lower mechanical properties.

  • The influence of MnO2 on the sintering property and PTCR behavior of(Ba0.8Sr0.2)TiO2 has been investigated. And the densities, grain sizes and electrical resitivities of specimens were measured as a function of doping with Mn ion of varying concentration. The density and grain size of the sintered specimens were almost the same regardless of MnO2 addition up to 0.2mol% MnO2. But in the case of 0.25mol% MnO2 addition, abnormal grain growth was appeared. So the grain size distribution was wide and density decreased greatly. The room-temperature resistivity increased as Mn content increased and the temperature coefficient of resistivity was highest in the case of 0.15mol% MnO2 addition.

  • In the present study, we examined the influence of prestrain on creep strength of Class M alloy(STS310S) and Class A(STS310J1TB) alloys containing precipitates. Prestrain was given by prior creep at a higher stress than the following creep stresses. Creep behaviour before and after stress change and creep rate of pre-strained specimens were compared with that of virgin specimens. Pre-straining produced the strain region where the strain rate was lower than that of a virgin specimen both for STS310J1TB and STS310S steels. The reason for this phenomenon was ascribable to the viscous motion of dislocations, the interaction between dislocations and precipitates in a STS310J1TB steel, and the interaction of dislocations with sub-boundaries in a STS310S steen which has the higher dislocation density and smaller subgrain size resulted from pre-straining at higher stress.

  • This paper describes a series of laboratory tests carried out to evaluate the influence of bed joint orientation on interlocking grouted stabilised mud-flyash brick masonry under uniaxial cyclic compressive loading. Five cases of loading at $0^{\circ}$, $22.5^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $67.5^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ with the bed joints were considered. The brick units and masonry system developed by Prof. S.N. Sinha were used in present investigation. Eighteen specimens of size $500mm{\times}100mm{\times}700mm$ and twenty seven specimens of size $500mm{\times}100mm{\times}500mm$ were tested. The envelope stress-strain curve, common point curve and stability point curve were established for all five cases of loading with respect to bed joints. A general analytical expression is proposed for these curves which fit reasonably well with the experimental data. Also, the stability point curve has been used to define the permissible stress level in the brick masonry.

  • In this study, the size effect in measuring the fracture toughness of rock was investigated using the ISRM Suggested Method for Fracture toughness using Chevron Bend Specimens. Total 58 specimens were prepared with 4 different diameters, 29, 42, 54, 68mm and center cut-chevron notch. In addition to this, to evaluated the effect of anisotropy of Jecheon granite, which is the sample for this study, core drilling direction was adjusted perpendicular(short transverse) and parallel(arrester) to the rift plane in the sample and the measured fracture toughness for each direction were compared. Important results obtained from this study are as follows. Level ll test condition is more adequate than l, because of low data scattering and precision and corrected fracture toughness of Jechoen granite measured and 2.2MPa{{{{ SQRT { m} }}}} for arrester direction with minimum initial crack length 0.7cm. From the relationship between core diameter and initial crack length presented in the ISRM testing method, the specimen diameter should be bigger than 47mm. The fracture toughnesses measured for arrester and short transverse directon show 10% difference. This is to the anisotropy of Jecheon granite possessing rift plane.

  • La0.8Ca0.2Cr0.98O3 powder was prepared using the modified Pechini process. Various crystalline phases formed during thermal decomposition were investigated. (La,Ca)CrO4 phase, first formed from the precursor, was transformed to (La,Ca)CrO3 and CaCrO4 above 80$0^{\circ}C$, which remained up to 110$0^{\circ}C$. However, only (La,Ca)CrO3 phase consisting of orthorhombic and intermediate rhombohedral polymorphs was observed after sintering at 125$0^{\circ}C$. The specimens sintered at 140$0^{\circ}C$ exhibited 98% of relative density and rather wide grain size distribution with average grain size of 3-4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Densification and grain growth of the specimens observed above 125$0^{\circ}C$ were presumably attributed to liquid phase sintering resulted from melting of Ca3(CrO4)2 phase.

  • The large-scale direct tension tests of plain concrete were performed and then the complete load-CMOD(crack mouth opening displacement) curves with a stable postpeak descending part were presented. Two independently controlled actuators were used to ensure a homogeneous increasing of CMOD in both notches of a specimen and to avoid secondary flexural stresses. It was compared the fracture energies from the test results with them from a classical prediction equation by Bazant and Oh (983), The results are indicated that the fracture energies from these large-scale direct tensile tests are large as 1.5-2 times on average against them from the Bazants prediction equation. But the tensile strength for large-size specimens was about half of the values determined from the splitting tensile strength tests for 10 by 20mm cylindrical specimens due to size effect.

  • Recently, zirconia is widely used in the field of dental ceramics thanks to the proliferation of CAD/CAM systems. Accordingly, different types of zirconia block are being solid in the market. However, there are no precise, objective standards for properties of zirconia. This study concerns the flexural strength of zirconia ceramic for CAD/CAM block. The test specimens used for this study were ZirBlank(Acucera), ZirBlank shade(Acucera), VITA, Cercon(Densply) and Cerasys. The test results suggest that ZirBlank shade block shows the highest flexural strength and density among the zirconia blocks tested. Its flexural strength was $971{\pm}58MPa$ and its density was 99.89%. On the other hand, Cerasys block shows the lowest flexural strength of $576{\pm}36MPa$ and the lowest density of 94.85%. Given all, the density of the specimens is found to be directly proportional to strength and inversely to grain size.
