In finite element analysis of mechanical behavior of weld, typical process is first to obtain a finite element model containing residual stress by conducting welding analysis and then to examine the computational specimen for various external loading. The numerical specimen with residual stress has irregular boundary lines since one usually begins the welding analysis from a body having regular straight boundary lines and large thermal contraction takes place during cooling of weld metal. We notice that these numerical weld specimens are different from the real weld specimens as the real specimens are usually cut from a bigger weld part and consequently have straight boundaries neglecting elastic relaxation associated with the cutting. In this paper, an iterative finite element method is described to obtain a weld specimen which is bounded by straight lines. The stress distributions of two types of weld specimen, one with regular and the other with irregular boundaries, are compared to check the effect of the boundary shape. Results show that the stress distribution can be different when large plastic deformation is induced by the application of external loading. In case of elastic small deformation, the difference turns out almost negligible.
The grain boundary resistivity of a 1-mol%-$Al_2O_3$-dopedd CaO-Stabilized Zirconia(CSZ) specimen was determined by impedance spectroscopy using sub-millimeter-scale electrodes. At the initial stage of sintering, the grain-boundary resistivity of the specimen interior was observed to be higher than that of the surface. However, upon further sintering the boundary resistivity of the specimen interior became lower than that of the surface. The results were explained in terms of a redistribution of the intergranular liquid phase. The liquid phase was predicted to initially coagulate at the interior of the specimen then spread outward during sintering.
The effects of microstructure on fretting wear were investigated in Inconel 690 tube. The microstructure observation indicated that the solution annealing temperature and time affected the grain size of the Inconel 690 tubes. The carbide morphology, along grain boundaries, was mainly affected by thermal treatment time and temperature. The wear test results showed that specimens with larger grain size and with coarse carbides along grain boundaries had better wear resistance. Cracks were found in specimens with carbides along the grain boundary, while few cracks were found in carbide free specimens. It seemed that the carbides on grain boundary assisted crack formation and propagation in carbide containing specimens. On the other hand, the micro-hardness of specimen did not have a major role in fretting wear. It could be inferred from the SEM images of worn surfaces that the main wear mechanism of carbide containing specimen was delamination, while that of carbide free specimen was abrasion.

In this study, fatigue crack propagation in composite material under fatigue is investigated by simulation result. When another material on the specimen exists vertically to the crack line, the phenomena that crack may go straight or propagate along the boundary face according to the elastic modulus ratio of another material to matrix are investigated with compact tension specimen by compliance method. Crack propagation direction is evaluated by compliance method. By arranging this study result systematically about the crack propagation behavior due to the stiffness of inhomogeneous material, high-tech material (automobile, aircraft and steel industry) can be improved. The estimation of safety design and life (construction & nuclear power station, etc.) will be of great value industrially.

In this paper, the effect of the boundary conditions on the reliability and the cumulative distribution characteristics of the fatigue failure life is analyzed in a magnesium alloy AZ31. The boundary conditions are specimen thickness, stress ratio, and maximum fatigue load. The statistical data of the fatigue failure life are obtained by fatigue crack propagation tests under the detail conditions for each boundary condition. The 3-parameter Weibull distribution is used to analyze a statistical characteristics of the fatigue failure life in magnesium alloy AZ31. It is found that the statistical fatigue failure life is long in the case of a thicker specimen, a larger stress ratio, and a smaller maximum fatigue load. Under the opposite cases, the reliability on the fatigue failure life is rapidly dropped.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of boundary RC frame(composed of one tie-beam and two tie-columns) on seismic performance of unreinforced masonry walls to suggest alternative way for seismic design of unreinforced masonry wall structures. Two test specimens are prepared, one is a typical unreinforced masonry wall and another is alternative unreinforced masonry wall with additional boundary RC frame. The structural experiments were carried out to evaluate the difference of seismic resistance performance between two test specimens with or without the boundary RC frames. From the test results, it was found that the failure mode of unreinforced masonry wall fundamentally changed from 'brittle' to 'ductile' by the installing of boundary RC frames. And, the maximum load and energy dissipation capacity of the test specimen with boundary RC frame was increased about 1.6~1.7 and 2~3 times respectively compared with a typical unreinforced masonry wall specimen.
This paper presents experimental results on detailing of boundary element transverse reinforcement, proposed to alleviate placement detailing of special shear wall experiencing difficulty in construction at the sites due to recently reinforced seismic regulations, according to the type and placement interval of transverse reinforcement. As a result of experiment, crack and destruction aspects of SSWR series specimen that employed the proposed detailing of transverse reinforcement showed similar trend as SSW series specimen that used closed hoop. Predicted maximum strength values were exceeded. Also as a result of comparing energy dissipation ability, SSWR2 specimen that follows alleviated placement detailing was found to have similar seismic performance as special shear wall SSW2 specimen based on the existing design standard. As it satisfies the deformation angle condition of 1.5% provided in the design standard, SSWR2 can be used as the main lateral force resistance element in structures.
Impact tests on high-strength membrane materials under biaxial loads were experimentally conducted in order to evaluate influence of biaxial loads on impact fracture of the membrane materials for the inflated applications. Cruciform specimens of the membrane materials were fabricated for applying biaxial loadings during the impact test. A steel ball was shot using a compressed nitrogen gas gun, and struck the membrane specimen. Impact tests on uniaxial strip specimens were also conducted to obtain the effect of specimen configuration and boundary condition on the impact fracture. The results of the measured crack length and the ultra-high speed photographs indicate the impact fracture properties of the membrane fabrics under biaxial loadings. Crack length due to the impact increased with applied tensile load, and the impact damages of the cruciform membrane materials under biaxial loadings were smaller than those of under uniaxial loadings. Impact fracture of the strip specimen was more severe than that of the cruciform specimen due to the difference of boundary conditions.

For pure Molybdenum carburized in mixed gases of argon and carbon monoxide, microstructural observations were carried out. X-ray diffraction analysis for carburized specimens revealed that brittle ${\alpha}-Mo_2C$- layer hardly formed in the case of low carbon monoxide concentration. Fracture strength of the specimen carburized at 1673 K for 16 h is about 550 MPa higher than that of the un-carburized specimen. SEM observation revealed that with increasing carburizing temperature, the region demonstrating a transgranular fracture mode progressed towards the center of specimen. This result means that the grain boundaries were strengthened by the grain boundary diffusion of carbon and the strength of grain boundaries exceeded that of grain itself.

Several workers reported the relationship between osteoporosis and age-related reductions in the BV/TV (bone volume fraction) of vertebral trabecular bones. However, there were few micro finite element (micro-FE) models to account for the treatments of the osteoporotic trabecular bone. In the present study, micro-FE models of osteoporotic and hormone-treated bone models were constructed to analyze the effect of specimen location and boundary condition on mechanical characteristics of hormone treatment model for osteoporotic trabecular bone. Top and bottom sections of specimens were also investigated individually to study the effect of specimen location. Hormone-treated models were allowed to have the same relative BV/TV (13.4%) as that used in models of previous researchers. The present study reported the elastic and plastic characteristics of the osteoporosis and hormone-treated bone models. In the present study, in-situ boundary condition was applied to the simulated compression tests for in-vivo condition of vertebral trabecular bone. The present study indicated that the hormone therapy was likely to improve the mechanical characteristics of osteoporotic bones and the mechanical characteristics of vertebral trabecular bone specimen were dependent on the captured location and boundary condition.
