The objectives of this study were to classify quantitatively vegetational types of P. densiflora for. erecta forest. The results were summarized as follows. 1) According to the canonical correspondence analysis(CCA), variables such as topography, altitude, available P/sub 2/O/sub 5/, and Mg/sup 2+/were highly correlated on three axes. Based on the correlations between vegetation units and environmental factors, Rhododendron micranthum community tended to be more distributed in the such situations of high altitude, upper topography, high C/N ratio, low level of Mg/sup 2+/and Ca/sup 2+/. Vaccinium koreanum community tended to be more distributed in the such conditions of high altitude, upper topography, high level of Ca/sup 2+/and Ma/sup 2+/. 2) According to the results of importance value analysis, Tree layer and Subtree layer in study areas showed high Ⅳ along with P. densiflora for. erecta, Quercus mongonlica, Q. variabilis, Q. serrata, Fraxinus rhychophylla and shrub layer indicated that Ⅳ of P. densiflora for, erecta in Sokwang-ri area was higher than those of the other areas. Therefore, it was considered that P. densiflora for. erecta forest of Sokwang-ri area could be naturally regenerated. 3) According to results of species diversity, the species diversity of Uljin region showed the least low value as 0.6622, other regions appeared about 0.7. In the diversity by vegetation types, Acer pseudosieboldianum community showed high value. 4) According to the analysis of community similarity, Sokwang-Ri region was lowly correlated with Uljin region, while the index among the other areas appeared above 0.6. 5) According to the analysis of interspecific association, it was divided into 2 groups. The species of first group were mainly involved in character species, and the species of second group were involved in differential species groups.
The community structure of macrobenthos was investigated around Sorido Island, southern coast of Korea between August 1996 and April 1997. Triplicate macrobenthic samples were taken seasonally at twelve stations in August and November 1996 and fourteen stations in February and April 19n by van Veen grab ($0.1m^2$). A total of 217 macrobenthic species were identified during study Period: 80 species were from polychaetes, 60 species from crustaceans, and 46 species from mollusks. The mean density of macrobenthos estimated $1,068 ind/m^2$, and polychaetes comprised $85\%$ of total density. The mean biomass was $110.2 g/m^2$, and echinoderms contributed to more than a half of the biomass. Major dominant species based on abundance were three polychaetes Tharyx sp., Lumbrineris longifolia, and Magelona japonica, which frequently occur in the coastal area enriched by organic pollution. The densities of the species were $582 ind/m^2$, $72 ind/m^2$, and $41 ind/m^2$, respectively. These species showed very low density in the offshore area. The study area was classified into four regions each sustaining specific macrofaunal assemblages by Bray-Curtis cluster analysis: a station group adjacent to the Kwangyang Bay and Yosu harbour and three station groups around Sorido Island. There were negative correlations between the concentration of PAHs in sediments and the abundance of Ampeliscidae spp. and Amphipoda. These results were discussed in terms of both environmental factors and distribution of benthic community.
Background: To investigate the trends of succession occurring at the Pinus thunbergii forests on the lowlands of Jeju Island, we quantified the species compositions and the importance values by vegetation layers of Braun-Blanquet method on the Pinus thunbergii forests. We used multivariate analysis technique to know the correlations between the vegetation group types and the location environmental factors; we used the location environment factors such as altitudes above sea level, tidal winds (distance from the coast), annual average temperatures, and forest gaps to know the vegetation distribution patterns. Results: According to the results on the lowland of Jeju Island, the understory vegetation of the lowland Pinus thunbergii forests was dominated by tall evergreen broad-leaved trees such as Machilus thunbergii, Neolitsea sericea, and Cinnamomum japonicum showing a vegetation group structure of the mid-succession, and the distribution patterns of vegetation were determined by the altitudes above sea level, the tidal winds on the distance from the coast, the annual average temperatures, and the forest gaps. We could discriminate the secondary succession characteristics of the Pinus thunbergii forests on the lowland and highland of Jeju Island of South Korea. Conclusions: In the lowland of Jeju Island, the secondary succession will progress to the form of Pinus thunbergii (early successional species)→Machilus thunbergii, Litsea japonica (mid-successional species)→Machilus thunbergii (late-successional species) sequence in the temperate areas with strong tidal winds. In the highland of Jeju Island, the succession will progress to the form of Pinus thunbergii (early successional species)→Neolitsea sericea, Eurya japonica (mid-successional species)→Castanopsis sieboldii (late-successional species) sequence in the areas where tidal winds are weak and temperatures are relatively low. However, local differences between lowland and highland of Jeju Island will be caused by the micro-environmental factors resulting from the topographic differences and the supply of tree seeds. From the characteristics of succession study, we could properly predict and manage the Pinus thunbergii forest ecosystem on lowland and highland of Jeju Island.
The valley forests at Baraebong area, Jirisan National Park were studied to investigate forest structure of tree, subtree and shrub layers in relation to aspect and altitude of the slope. Density and basal area of the tree layer in the north-facing slope were greater than those in the south-facing slope. As elevation increased, basal area of the tree layer decreased in north-facing slope. The impotance percentage of Quercus mongolica increased with increasing elevation while those of Quercus serrata and Pinus densiflora decreased. Species diversity of the north-facing slope was 1.307 and that of the south-facing slope was 1.114. There was a tendency that number of species, species diversity and evenness decreased with increasing elevation. The result of cluster analysis for the tree and subtree layer indicated that the studied forests were classified into Quercus senrraa-broad-leaved tree species community at the low and middle elevation belts of the south-facing slope, Quercus mongolika-broad-leaved tree species community at the high elevation belt of the south-facing slope, the middle and high elevation belts of the north-facing slope and top area, and Pinus densiflora-Quercus mangolica community at the low elevation belt of the north-facing slope. There were significantly positive correlations in the importance percentages among Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus serrata, Styrax obassica and Linden obtuiloba, and among Castanea crenata, Rhodndendron schippen-bachii and Vibntnum erosum.
To investigate the structure and the conservation strategy of Nature Ecosystem Preservation Area, 65 plots(10m$\times$10m) set up with random sampling method were surveyed. five group -Larix leptolepis Community, Quercus mongolica-Fraxinus rhynchophylla Community, Fraxinus rhynchophylla-Quercus mongolica community. Quercus mongolica-Acer pseudo-sieboldianum community, Quercus mongolica community were classified by cluster analysis. High positive correlations was proved between Quercus mongolica and Sorbus of alnifolia, Acer Mono, Lonicera praeflorens, Sorbus commixta ; Acer mono and Lonicera praeflorens, Sorbus commixta ; Maackia amurensis and Acer triflorum ; Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Betula davurica ; Lonicera praeflorens and Cornus controversa, Sorbus commixta ; Acer triflorum and Rhamnus toshinoi ; Pyrus ussuriensis and Prunus padus ; Cornuscontroversa, and Sorbus commixta, and high negative corrlations was proved between Quercus mongolica and Larix leptolepis, Carpinus cordata ; Tilia amurensis and Larix leptolepis, Morus bombycis. Species diversity(H' ) of investigated groups were ranged 0.4443~1.2036.
Cyathea gigantea is a tree fern distributed throughout humid tropical regions of northeast India and other parts of the country. However, wild populations of this species are largely affected by various natural and anthropogenic activities. Therefore, an attempt was made to study the population structure and regeneration status of C. gigantea in and around greater Itanagar area of Papum Pare district, Arunachal Pradesh. Altogether 45 patches, ranging from 19.63 to $260m^2$ of area, were randomly sampled to study population structure and regeneration status of the species. Population study showed highest number of youngs in the height class of 0.50-0.75 m while, immatures were recorded highest in the height class of 2.0 to 2.5 m. Majority of the matures belonged to 6-9 m height class while it was recorded maximum in the diameter class of 10-15 cm. Average density of C. gigantea was $0.07individuals\;ha^{-1}$ which varied greatly among different patches with a range of 2 to 14. Significant correlations were found between patch size and density of youngs, immatures, matures and total density. Maximum concentration of youngs was observed in patch size $60-140m^2$, while for immatures, it was highest in patch size $20-160m^2$. Similarly, highest concentration of matures was observed in patch size $20-80m^2$ and $80-180m^2$. Population structure of the total population exhibited inverted pyramid shaped distribution. Population structure consisting of youngs, immatures, matures showed that around 60% patches lack of regenerating individuals which depict very poor natural regeneration of the species. Effective conservation strategies are therefore to be formulated to save C. gigantea from the threat of extinction in near future.
Site-specific allometric equations relating aboveground tree component biomass and leaf area to tree diameter, basal area, sapwood cross-sectional area and sapwood volume were developed using the destructive harvesting method for Pinus rigida Mill., Larix leptolepis Gordon, and Quercus serrata Thunb. stands in Yangpyeong, Kyonggi Province. There were significantly strong correlations between aboveground tree component biomass or leaf area and diameter at breast height (DBH), basal area, sapwood area and sapwood volume. For a similar diameter tree, the three species had a similar stem wood biomass. However, carbon allocation patterns to stem bark, foliage, branch and total aboveground biomass differed among the three species. Specific leaf area and the ratio of leaf area to sapwood cross-sectional area of the three species were significantly different. Allometric equations seemed To be related to leaf habit or leaf longevity. To elucidate the effect of leaf habit or leaf longevity on allometry and canopy characteristics clearly, more intensive studies are needed.
Population dynamics of Anabaena and the anatoxin-a concentration were monitored with physicochemical parameters at 3 sites in the lower Naktong River from May to September in 2000. Total 4 species of Anabaena (A. flosaquae, A. smithii, A. ucrainica and A. mucosa) were identified with morphological characterisitcs. Anabaena flos-aquae was most abundant among the populations. The standing crop of Anabaena ranged from 10 to 11,220 cells · $ml^{-1}$ and biomass of Anabaena more 1,000 cells · $ml^{-1}$ was obseved once at St. Mulgeum and St. Seonam, twice at St. Hagueon out of total 9 samplings. There were not significant correlations between the standing crop of Anabaena and other physicochemical parameters such as temperature, nitrate, total nitrogen, phosphate, total phophorus and N/P ratios. The frequency of trichomes with akinetes was low and ranged from 0 to 4% in the total Anabaena population and A. smithii showed highest frequency of 2.8% among all species. The population at St. Seonam showed highest frequency of 1.4% among all sampling sties. The population in September showed the highest frequency of 3.0% among all sampling period. The frequency of trichomes with heterocysts was low and ranged from 1 to 87% inthe total Anabaena population and A. smithii showed highest frequency of 55.1% among all species. The population at St. Mulgeum showed highest frequency of 17.6% among all sampling sites. The population in August showed the highest frequency of 21.4% among all sampling period. The frequency of trichomes with akinetes and/or heterocysts was not related to all the physicochemical parameters of temperature, nitrate, total nitrogen, phosphate, total phosphorus and N/P ratios. The anatoxin-a concentations were determined in algal materials dominated by Microcystis and Anabaena from June though August by derivatization using 7-fluoro-4-nitro-2, 1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD-F) and HPLC analysis with fluorimetric detection. All the concentrations were below the detection limit of 0.1 ㎍ · $l^{-1}$ in the present study.

This study was carried out to investigate the relationships and the variations of agronomic characteristics in the shoot and root part of grasses for the basic data of the development, the management and the utilization of pasture in the forest. This study was conducted with 0% (full sunlight), 25%, 50% and 75% of shading degrees after orchardgrass, timothy, perennial ryegrass, ladino clover and orchardgrass dominated mixture were planted on Aug. 25 in 1984. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Dry matter yield in 25% of shading was increased 3-1 7% compared with 0% (full sunlight), while 50 and 75% of shading were decreased 28-35% and 44-60%, respectively. Dry matter yield of timothy, perennial ryegrass and ladino clover were decreased 10, 8 and 33%, respectively, compared with orchardgrass, but there was little difference between orchard grass and mixture. 2. Root distribution by different shading degrees was the maximum at 25%, followed by 0, 50 and 75% of shading degrees. Root distribution among different species was the maximum at orchardgrass, followed by perennial ryegrass and timothy. Especially, root distribution of timothy was very little compared with different species. And significantly positive correlation was observed in the relationship between root weight and dry matter yield (r=0.8 102**). 3. The physiological activity of root by different shading degrees was declined by more shading. 4. The length and the percentage of blade by different shading degrees was an increase tendency by more shading. The length and the percentage of blade among different species was followed by timothy, perennial ryegrass and orchardgrass, in that order. And the correlation between the percentage of blade and dry matter yield was significantly negative.
Two Neanurid species of Collembola, Lobella minuta n. sp., and Morulina triverrucosa Tanaka, 1978 were identified from collections of South-Western part of Korea. They were, in addition, confirmed to be genera of new record to the country. From their common structure of simple mouth parts it was postulated that they may have both hypertrophy and polytene development of salivary glands in the light of early evidences by Cassagnau. These assumptions were tested for the above two Korean species using cytological and histological techniques. The results of the investigations have proved to be positive for the postulations, thus supporting hypothetical correlations of simple mouth parts with polytene development, irrespective of taxa, not limited to Neanurini as indicated in early works. However the structurization of the polytene chromosomes was shown of different extent between the two, i.e., in Lobella minuta, clearly more differentiated than in Morulina triverrucosa in spite of the strong similarity of mouth parts, which are to be seen as a distinct convergence from two tribes, Neanurini and Morulini. It remains to be studied consequently to know whether there as any factor other than mouth part structure affecting polytene development and also if the parallelism among a few different taxa of mouth parts would be the case with polytene development of salivary glands either.
