A combined process of non-thermal plasma and catalytic techniques has been investigated to treat toxic gas compounds in air. The treated gas in the present study is $CH_3$CN that has been known to be a simulant of toxic chemical agent. A planar type dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) reactor has been used to generate non-thermal plasma that produces various chemically active species, O, N, OH, $O_3$, ion, electrons, etc. Several different types of adsorbents and catalysts, which are MS 5A, MS 13X, Pt/alumina, are packed into the plasma reactor, and have been tested to save power consumption and to treat by-products. Various aspects of the present techniques, which are decomposition efficiencies along with the power consumption, by-product analysis, reaction pathways modified by the adsorbents and catalysts, have been discussed in the present study.
The effect of non-thermal plasma on diffusion flames in co-flow jets has been studied experimentally by adopting a dielectric barrier discharge technique. The generation of streamers was enhanced with a flame due to increased reduced electric fields by high temperature burnt gas and the abundance of ions in the flame region. The effect of streamers on flame behavior reveals that the flame length was significantly decreased as the applied voltage increased and the yellow luminosity by the radiation of soot particles was also significantly reduced. The formation of PAH and soot was influenced appreciably by the non-thermal plasma, while the flame temperature and the concentration of major species were not influence much with the plasma generation. The results demonstrated that the application of non-thermal plasma can be a viable technique in controlling soot generation in flames with low power consumption in the order of 1 W.

A combined process of non-thermal plasma and catalytic technique has been investigated to treat $CH_3$CN gas in the atmosphere. A planar type dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor has been used to generate the non-thermal plasma that produces various chemically active species, such as O, N, OH, $O_3$, ion, electrons, etc. Several different types of the beads. which are Molecular Sieve (MS) 5A, MS 13X, Pt/alumina beads, are packed into the DBD reactor, and have been tested to characterize the effects of adsorption and catalytic process on treating the $CH_3$CN gas in the DBD reactor. The test results showed that the operating power consumption and the amounts of the by-products of the non-thermal plasma process can be reduced by the assistance of the adsorption and catalytic process.
A vascular flora survey was conducted in 2020 to identify flora and analyze changes in the numbers of vascular flora species over the past 10 years at Gongju-weir (GW) and Baekje-weir (BW) in the Geumgang River, Republic of Korea. A total of 241 taxa were found in GW and 279 taxa in BW, and 208 taxa (88% of total taxa) were common species. The distribution of invasive species in GW and BW were seven and eight taxa, respectively. Rare plants were not identified in any of the weirs. The Poaceae family dominated in terms of number of species, followed by Asteraceae, Legumes, Cyperaceae, and Polygonaceae. Additionally, Therophytes accounted for a high proportion of Raunkiaer life forms. The numbers of vascular plant species, total taxa, naturalized plants, and invasive species have been increasing over the last 10 years. However, long-term alterations in invasive species before and after the opening of the weirs increased much more significantly in the partially opened BW than in the fully opened GW. These results indicate that the degree of barrier opening does not affect the invasion and establishment of non-native species.
Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma is a new technique for use in environmental pollutant degradation, which is characterized by the production of hydroxyl radicals as the primary degradation species. Due to the short lifetime of the chemically active species generated during the plasma reaction, the dissolution of the plasma gas has a significant effect on the reaction performance. The plasma reaction performance can be enhanced by combining the basic plasma reactor with a homogenizer system in which the bubbles are destroyed and turned into micro-bubbles. For this purpose, the improvement of the dissolution of plasma gas was evaluated by measuring the RNO (N-dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline, an indicator of the generation of OH radicals). Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of the diameter, rotation speed, and height of the homogenizer, pore size, and number of the diffuser and the applied voltage on the plasma reaction. The results showed that the RNO removal efficiency of the plasma reactor combined with a homogenizer is two times higher than that of the conventional one. The optimum rotor size and rotation speed of the homogenizer were 15.1 mm, and 19,700 rpm, respectively. Except for the lowest pore size distribution of $10-16{\mu}m$, the pore size of the diffuser showed little effect on RNO removal.

Ecological control can contribute to the sustainibility of vegetation management systems by reducing the input currently derived from non-renewable fossil energy sources. The use of turfgrass mixtures is an important tool in turf management. Turfgrass mixtures of two or more compatible and adapted species provide improved tolerance to pest and environmental stress, more so than monostands. The objectives of this study were to evaluated turf insects, pests and zoysia large patch control by turgrass mixtures. In April 2001 and 2002, plots were inoculated with 50g of Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2LP inoculum. Inoculum were treated within a 29cm diamater circle at Zoysia japonica, Zoysia japonica, Poa pratenis, or Festuca arundinacea mixtures. After four weeks, disease severity in each plot was determined. plot area visual ratings were assessed visually on a linera 0 to 100%. In August 2001 and October 2002, turf insects and pests in each plot were investigated in 10cm deep soil cores with 8cm diameters using hole cut. Zoysia large patch affected zoysiagrass monostands more severly than zoysiagrass and cool-season turfgrasses mixtures. It was suggested that the barrier effect of cool-season turfgrass suppressed zoysia large patch in the mixture of zoysiagrass and cool-season turfgrasses. Also, warm-season and cool-season turfgrasses mixtures suppressed insect populations more efficiently than warm-season turfgrass monostands.
A goal of phylogeography is to relate phylogenetic patterns to potential historic and contemporary geographic isolating events. Genetic breaks found in phylogeographic studies may denote boundaries between more generally applicable biogeographic regions. We investigated the distribution of Lessonia variegata, an important habitat forming alga, found on most rocky shores around New Zealand’s main islands, plus related species from surrounding waters. L. variegata has been shown to consist of four distinct cryptic species. Our aim was to compare the distribution of L. variegata with proposed bioregions; and to develop phylogeographic hypotheses to explain its present day distribution. Both a mitochondrial (atp8-sp) and plastid (RuBisCo spacer) marker, with different mutation rates, were used to gain information of the phylogenetic history of Lessonia. The data revealed high phylogeographic structuring and reciprocal endemism for all L. variegata cryptic species. One species (L. variegata / N) is confined to the northern part of the North Island of New Zealand; L. variegata / W is found at the southeast of the North Island and the northern South Island; L. variegata / K is endemic to the northeast South Island; and L. variegata / S is restricted to the southern part of the South Island. No overlapping areas of L. variegata species distribution were found. The data showed that genetic breaks in Lessonia do mostly correlate to bioregions, and highlight the importance of Cape Campbell at the northeast of the South Island and East Cape in the North Island, well known phylogeographic breaks, as a barrier between adjacent species.
Many chemically active species such as ${\cdot}H$, ${\cdot}OH$, $O_3$, $H_2O_2$, hydrated $e^-$, as well as ultraviolet rays, are produced by Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma in water and are widely use to remove non-biodegradable materials and deactivate microorganisms. As the plasma gas containing chemically active species that is generated from the plasma reaction has a short lifetime and low solubility in water, increasing the dissolution rate of this gas is an important challenge. To this end, the plasma gas and water within reactor were mixed using the air-automizing nozzle, and then, water-gas mixture was injected into water. The dissolving effect of plasma gas was indirectly confirmed by measuring the RNO (N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline, indicator of the formation of OH radical) solution. The plasma system consisted of an oxygen generator, a high-voltage power supply, a plasma generator and a liquid-gas mixing reactor. Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of location of air-automizing nozzle, flow rate of plasma gas, water circulation rate, and high-voltage on RNO degradation. The experimental results showed that the RNO removal efficiency of the air-automizing nozzle is 29.8% higher than the conventional diffuser. The nozzle position from water surface was not considered to be a major factor in the design and operation of the plasma reactor. The plasma gas flow rate and water circulation rate with the highest RNO removal rate were 3.5 L/min and 1.5 L/min, respectively. The ratio of the plasma gas flow rate to the water circulation rate for obtaining an RNO removal rate of over 95% was 1.67 ~ 4.00.
Three fabrication techniques for forming thin barrier layer with uniform thickness and large barrier height in magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) are discussed. First, the effect of immiscible element addition to Cu layer, a high conducting layer generally placed under the MTJ, is investigated in order to reduce the surface roughness of the bottom ferromagnetic layer, on which the barrier is formed. The Ag addition to the Cu layer successfully realizes the smooth surface of the ferromagnetic layer because of the suppression of the grain growth of Cu. Second, a new plasma source, characterized as low electron energy of 1 eV and high density of $10^{12}$$cm^{-3}$, is introduced to the Al oxidation process in MTJ fabrication in order to reduce damages to the barrier layer by the ion-bombardment. The magnetotransport properties of the MTJs are investigated as a function of the annealing temperature. As a peculiar feature, the monotonous decrease of resistance area product (RA) is observed with increasing the annealing temperature. The decrease of the RA is due to the decrease of the effective barrier width. Third, the influence of the mixed inert gas species for plasma oxidization process of metallic Al layer on the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) was investigated. By the use of Kr-O$_2$ plasma for Al oxidation process, a 58.8 % of MR ratio was obtained at room temperature after annealing the junction at $300{^{\circ}C}$, while the achieved TMR ratio of the MTJ fabricated with usual Ar-$0_2$ plasma remained 48.4%. A faster oxidization rate of the Al layer by using Kr-O$_2$ plasma is a possible cause to prevent the over oxidization of Al layer and to realize a large magnetoresistance.
