Hepatoprotective and Anti-fatigue Effects of Lactic Acid Bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum and Streptococcus thermophilus)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of LAB (Lactic acid bacteria: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum and Streptococcus thermophilus) on detoxication of damaged liver in carbon tetrachloride ($CCl_4$) and ethanol (25%)-treated rats. Rats had been daily (twice a day) pre-treated with saline (0.5 ml/kg: untreated group), $CCl_4$ (0.5 ml/kg: other groups) for 6 days. At seventh day, after treating rat with $CCl_4$ and then, mixture of LAB ($10^{11}$/0.5 ml: LAB group), saline (0.5 ml/kg: untreated group, $CCl_4$ group), and biphenyl dimethyl dicarboxylate (DDB) (50 mg/kg: DDB group) were treated orally with $CCl_4$ for 8 days. Ethanol is treated as the same manner instead of $CCl_4$. To investigate the hepatoprotective effect, rats treated with $CCl_4$ and ethanol were analyzed with serum GOT and GPT level. The GOT and GPT levels of LAB group was lower than the level of $CCl_4$ and DDB group. Especially, compared with data of $CCl_4$ group, GPT activity showed statistically significant result in the significance level of p < 0.05. The LAB group treated with ethanol also showed lower level of GOT and GPT than the other control groups treated with ethanol. The triglyceride level of serum decreased more in a group treated special materials (DDB and LAB group) than ethanol group. As well, the effect of LAB on the antifatigue has been investigated. The animals (10/group) were divided into 4 groups (untreated group, Carrier group, Red-ginseng group, LAB group). Each group was given carrier (0.9 mg/0.2 ml), red ginseng extract (200 mg/kg), and mixture of LAB ($10^{11}$/0.2 ml). Special materials were given for three weeks. After finishing treating through oral, horizontal wire test, rotarod test, and forced swimming test were performed. The time of resistance to fatigue of the group, fed with mixture of LAB, was longer than the time when mice treated with red-ginseng that the effect was already revealed. The result of this study revealed that LAB could decrease hepatocelluar injury compared with rats treated orally with $CCl_4$ and ethanol, and could also decrease fatigue.

Effect of Green Tea on the Anti-Duodenal Ulcer in Cysteamine- Administrated Rats (녹차추출액이 Cysteamine투여 흰쥐의 항십이지장궤양에 미치는 영향)

  • Effect of green tea extract, on duodenal ulceration was studied in male Sprague Dawley rats treated with cysteamine, a drug, which causes duodenal ulcers in experimental animal. As a result, in the proximal duodenum, a significant decrease of ulceration was detected twenty four hours after cysteamine injection in rats raised in green tea extract for 63days. Special reference to duodenal alkaline phosphatase activity was measured in mucosal homogenates. In control rats raised in tap water Riven saline, significant decrease was observed in proximal duodenal alkaline phosphataes activity. The decrease effect seems site specific, since the enzyme in the distal duodenum remains. Moreover the effect cysteamine in control rats alkaline phosphatase is specific, because, in rats raised in green tea extracts did not show significant change in activity. It is suggested that green tea extract acts in ideal properties as an anti-duodenal ulcer agent.

  • The dewaterability of a sludge can be characterized by two ways: the residual moisture content in the sludge cake after dewatering process, and the filtration of the sludge. Time to filter (TTF) represents filtration processes that are special cases of the flow through a solid matrix concept. TTF characterizes a resistance to filtration. The sludge resistance, in turn, can be subdivided into resistances associated with the solid phase and the liquid phase to evaluate the effect of each of the two phases on sludge dewaterability. In order to determine the dewatering characteristics of the water sludge samples, TTF and zeta potential were measured. For these studies cationic polymer was chosen for water sludge dewatering experiments. The zeta potential of thickener sludges neared from minus values to zero values till 4 days after sampling. The dewaterability of thickener sludges using cationic polymer was deteriorated according to the increase of detention time. As the detention time was increased from 4 to 10 days, the optimal dose of the polymer was increased from 4 to 8mg/L. Therefore, the optimal detention time plays an important part for the dewaterability of a sludge.

COMPARISON OF THE GROWTH OF CANDIDA ALBICANS AMONG THE TISSUE CONDITIONERS (수종의 점막조정제간에 Candida albicans의 성장 양상 비교)

  • The use of tissue conditioners has come into favor for preprosthetic treatment and the treatment of Denture stomatitis, but the major problem in the use of the tissue conditioner is the growth of C.albicans. To compare the growth of C.albicans according to the type and the wearing period of the tissue conditioner, three commercial tissue conditioners were relined to intraoral plates which were delivered to 14 smoking, 12 nonsmoking healthy men. Cultures were made from the conditioner surface at 2, 7, 14, 21 days after after intraoral placement. The frequency of positive culture and colony counts of C.albicans were measured by imprint culture technique. The following results were achieved : 1. The frequency of positive cluture had increased significantly for all materials used. 2. The frequency of positive culture had incresed significantly around 2,14 days for day for COE-Comfort, SR-Ivoseal. 3. There were no significant difference in the colony counts of C.albicans among the mate rials used. 4. There were an over-all increase with the wearing period of tissue conditioners and significant increase around 2, 7, 14 days for COE-Comfort, and 2, 14 days for SR-Ivoseal, viscogel in colony counts. 5. Smoking had no effect on the growth of C.albicans. That is, there were no difference among the materials used in the growth of C.albicans. In the clinical application of tissue conditioners, we should avoid a long term use of it, but in inevitable cases, special disinfection procedures should be considered.

The Ubiquitous age Is a organic period for human, space and objects to interact to each other. This relationship can not be alternated by technology. Instead the technology can be a premise and because of the human being's new faculty of sensation, this age request emotional and interactive space design. In this modern life, the study of emotional and sensuous experience and metaphoric process can not be overlooked and should be researched more thoroughly to complete the theory of the new space design.

The Possible Protective Role of Korean Ginseng on Ochratoxicosis: with Special References on Chromosomal Aberrations in Rats.

  • Ochratoxin A (OA) is a potent mycotoxin causing considerable health hazard and economic loss- e,i. OA is of concern as it is hepato-nephrotoxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic to a great variety of animals. LDso of crude OA was 8.5 mgf kg.b.w., i.p. The clinical symptoms, mortalities and necropsy were recorded in rats injected with OA (LD5o, i.p.) during 10 days of daily treatment. Ginseng treatments (20 mg 1 kg. b.w., i.p.) : before, mixed with, or after OA dose, completely prevented the mortality in rats. OA-treated animals showed microcytic normochromic anaemia, lucocytosis, hypoproteinaemia and elevation of serum ALT, AST, AP, urea, and creatinine values. These findings were declined near the normal levels when ginseng injected with OA. OA (115 LDso) induced chromosomal aberrations (65.66%) compared to the control. When ginseng given 10 min before OA injection, chromosomal aberrations were reduced to be 31.66% compared to OA-treated animals. In conclusion: ginseng has a protective effect against ochratoxicosis, it has anti-genotoxic activity and it can repair the chromosomal damage induced by ochratoxin A.   • Recently, the problem controlling lateral drift is important in tall buildings for improvement in economic efficiency and habitability. But, the Outrigger System, general used for tall building in Korea, has weak points with the occupancy of special space and the long duration of works. The dampers are applied to actively control building's response by earthquake and wind load in these days. Accordingly, we analyze the effect of the drift control using various dampers to substitute for the Outrigger System as the efficient system in tall buildings.

  • In this paper, 1-168 hours ahead load prediction algorithm is developed for power system economic weekly operation. Total load is composed of three components, which are base load, week load and weather-sensitive load. Base load and week load are predicted by moving average and exponential smoothing method, respectively. The days of moving average and smoothing constant are optimally determined. Weather-sensitive load is modeled by linear form. The paramiters of weather load model are estimated by exponentially weighted recursive least square method. The load prediction of special day is very tedious, difficult and remains many problems which should be improved. Test results are given for the day of different types using the actual load data of KEPCO.

Manufacturing and Quality Characteristics of Low Calori Kimchi Noodle (저열량 김치국수의 제조 및 품질특성)

  • Kimchi noodle have a original taste and characteristics. This noodle was used for sour kimchi, kimchi taste powder, red bean fiber and emulsified oil etc. with RS(resistant starch) premix as blended wheat flour mixed to resistant starch. For manufacturing process of this kimchi mixed dry noodle, suitable kimchi of $pH3.70{\sim}3.80$ was required storage period during $4{\sim}5days$ at room temperature. At this point, the suitable treating amount of sour kimchi was about 20%(w/w) level. Manufacturing of kimchi noodle could be at the suitable manufacturing condition from use of kimchi taste powder and red bean fiber etc. Calori of this kimchi noodle was 308.17Kcal/100g as low level than wheat flour noodle as 355.82Kcal/100g, decreasing effect of calori was about 13.39%. This kimchi noodle had a characteristic sour and hot taste, that wasn't required the special seasoning and/or soup at this result.

Effect of Pre- or Post-harvest Treatment of Calcium-chitosan on Fruit Quality of Hardy Kiwifruit (수확 전후 칼슘-키토산 처리에 따른 다래의 저장성 변화)

  • This study was focused to examine the effects of pre- or post-harvest Ca-chitosan treatment on the shelf-life of 'Daesung' hardy kiwifruit. In the preharvest treatment, Ca-chitosan at 200 mg/L was intensively sprayed to the fruit three times on August 20, 25, and 28 in an order whereas harvested fruits were dipped for 10 sec. at the same concentration of chitosan as the postharvest treatment. Fruits were stored at 17℃ for 9 days and 1℃ for 40 days, respectively. Soluble solid contents, titratable acidity, firmness, respiration rate, and weight loss were examined to configure the qualities of fruits during storage. The changes of fruit quality parameters occurred more rapidly in calcium-chitosan treatment compared to untreated control when fruit were stored at 17℃. Both pre- or post-harvest Ca-chitosan treatment, however, effectively decreases the weight and firmness of fruit stored at 1℃. Fruit respiration rate was also reduced, indicating the increase of shelf-life throughout ripening of the fruit.
