  • A 15-year-old spayed female Yorkshire Terrier was presented to our hospital with a history of anorexia, depression and abdominal pain. Diagnostic procedures including blood test, radiography and ultrasonography were performed. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed multiple hypoechoic cysts in the left lobe of the liver. Over time, the cysts increased in size and became more echogenic. Four days later, the rupture of the largest cyst was suspected, and hepatic abscesses with bacteria were confirmed by aspiration of the cyst. Despite surgical resection of the abscessed liver lobe, antibiotic administration, and supportive therapy, the dog died 9 days after presentation to the hospital and 4 days after the surgical procedure. The present case report described the overall diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for liver abscesses in a dog.

  • A 5-year-old spayed female mixed-breed dog, previously receiving 7 months of immunosuppressive therapy for pemphigus foliaceus, presented to our referral hospital with a history of dog bites on the right forelimb, chest, and flank 4 days prior to presentation. Physical examination revealed a rectal temperature of 38.6℃; heart rate of 130 beats per minute; panting; systolic blood pressure of 60 mmHg; and swelling, purulent discharge, warmth, pain, and lameness in the right forelimb. The laboratory investigation revealed neutropenia and elevated C-reactive protein levels. Suppurative neutrophilic infiltration with bacterial infection was detected by impression cytology of the pus on the right forelimb. Based on the results of the clinical examinations and laboratory tests, the dog was diagnosed with dog bite-induced sepsis with pemphigus. Meropenem and metronidazole were prescribed. Clinical signs, neutropenia, and C-reactive protein levels markedly improved after 5 days. Subsequently, pemphigus foliaceus relapsed in the dog, and it is currently undergoing re-administration of immunosuppressive medications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of successful management of dog bite-induced sepsis in a dog undergoing long-term immunosuppressive therapy.

  • Four dogs (case 1; 2-year-old spayed female Schnauzer, case 2; 3-year-old spayed female Cocker Spaniel, case 3; 9-year-old castrated male Yorkshire Terrier, and case 4; 9-year-old intact female Shih-tzu) were referred to us with gastrointestinal signs such as diarrhea, vomiting, and anorexia. Results of blood analysis revealed hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia in all dogs. Case 4 showed large circular mass which is connected with small intestine on abdominal ultrasonography and other 3 cases showed no remarkable findings on abdominal radiography and ultrasonography. We performed enterectomy in case 4 and gastrointestinal endoscopic examination with biopsy in other 3 patients. Finally, 4 patients diagnosed to protein losing enteropathy with 4 different etiologies.

  • An 8-year-old spayed female Maltese (2.5 kg of body weight) presented with the primary complaint of loud heart murmur and exercise intolerance. Diagnostic imaging revealed severe pulmonic stenosis (peak velocity 5.2 m/s) with right ventricular hypertrophy. The dog revisited after 2 years, at which time, diagnostic imaging revealed severe biventricular hypertrophy, dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, left atrial dilation and pulmonary hypertension with worsened pre-existing pulmonic stenosis. Postmortem investigation revealed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and regional myocardial infarction. The case was diagnosed as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy secondary to severe right and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction.

  • A 6 year-old, spayed female, Maltese dog was presented with precordial thrill and mild coughing. Thoracic auscultation revealed a grade V/VI systolic murmur with maximal intensity over the left apex characterized by musical murmur. Echocardiography revealed mild myxomatous degeneration of mitral valve and ruptured chordae tendineae. Musical murmur was produced due to the vibration of ruptured piece of chordae tendineae along with regurgitant flow. After treatment with furosemide and ramipril, clinical signs resolved and precordial thrill reduced. This case report describes typical clinical signs and phonocardiogram of musical murmur in a dog with acute chordae tendineae rupture.

  • A 7-year-old, spayed female Chihuahua with dyspnea, intermittent cyanosis, and dermal plaques was diagnosed with hyperadrenocorticism. Thoracic radiographs showed markedly hyperdense alveoli in multiple lung lobes. Computed tomography (CT) images showed lung mineralization confined to the lung parenchyma and pituitary macroadenoma. Pulmonary mineralization secondary to hyperadrenocorticism is commonly found on histopathologic examination. However, those lesions are rarely identified radiographically. We describe obvious pulmonary mineralization secondary to hyperadrenocorticism found on radiographs and present the first report regarding CT imaging of the mineralization. Pulmonary mineralization should be considered when a dog affected by hyperadrenocorticism shows diffuse lung mineralization on radiographs.

  • A 13-year-old, spayed, female Chihuahua dog was referred for evaluation of fever, lethargy, and dyspnea. Hematologic evaluation revealed severe neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and mild anemia. The dog had been undergoing phenobarbital therapy for the past 7 weeks because of generalized seizures due to meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown etiology. After ruling out other possible causes of cytopenias, a tentative diagnosis was made of drug-induced blood cell dyscrasia. The neutropenia and thrombocytopenia resolved after discontinuation of phenobarbital (8 days and 15 days after discontinuation, respectively). This is the first case report in Korea to demonstrate blood dyscrasia associated with idiosyncratic adverse effects of phenobarbital.

  • A 15-year-old, spayed-female Maltese dog was presented with history of erythema and pruritus in left axillary region. In physical examination, firm elevated erythematous lesions were distributed throughout the axillary lesion. Fine needle aspiration cytology showed neoplastic epithelial cells with anisocytosis, high N:C ratio, and prominent nucleoli. Histologically, this lesion was consisted of a proliferation of undifferentiated neoplastic cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm. Mitotic figures of the neoplastic cells were observed and the neoplastic cells were intensely positive for cytokeratin. The presenting tumor was diagnosed as dermal apocrine gland adenocarcinoma.

  • A 12-year-old spayed female Cocker Spaniel was presented with vomiting, diarrhea, depression, and hyporexia of 3-day duration. Microscopic examination of the abdominal fluid from a dog showed basophilic, amorphous to fibrillar materials without bile pigments or crystals. Total bilirubin concentration of the fluid was 19 times higher than the serum bilirubin concentration and exploratory laparotomy revealed a ruptured gallbladder and mucoceles in the abdominal cavity. Rupture of gallbladder mucoceles may cause atypical bile peritonitis in which mucinous material is observed instead of bile pigment.

  • This clinical report describes hemisection and endodontic treatment of first molar tooth and mandible fracture repair in a dog. A 10 years old spayed female shih-tzu was diagnosed as left mandibular fracture by oral examination and dental radiography. First, partial odontectomy of mesial root of mandibular first molar placed in fracture line was performed, and then endodontic treatment of distal root and bone graft in extraction site was performed. Thereafter the fracture region was fixed with interdental wiring and acryl resin splint. Mandibular fracture site was healed without any complications, observed for 19 weeks follow-up period. Upon this result, this case is proving that fractured mandible can be treated successfully with hemisection followed by bone graft, interdental wiring and acryl resin splint to preserve the remaining tooth for mastication rather than tooth extraction.
