  • In this paper, we present a visual analytics system that uses serial-correlation to detect an abnormal event in spatio-temporal data. Our approach extracts the topic-model from spatio-temporal tweets and then filters the abnormal event candidates using a seasonal-trend decomposition procedure based on Loess smoothing (STL). We re-extract the topic from the candidates, and then, we apply STL to the second candidate. Finally, we analyze the serial-correlation between the first candidates and the second candidate in order to detect abnormal events. We have used a visual analytic approach to detect the abnormal events, and therefore, the users can intuitively analyze abnormal event trends and cyclical patterns. For the case study, we have verified our visual analytics system by analyzing information related to two different events: the 'Gyeongju Mauna Resort collapse' and the 'Jindo-ferry sinking'.

  • Understanding of water sediment trends is an important part of water quality monitoring. Water quality variables change over time and space, and cannot be modeled or explained clearly by either temporal or spatial analysis alone. This research analysed the trends of temperature, pH levels and dissolved oxygen levels based on the sediment records and spatial data obtained in Lower Mekong Basin (LMB) during 1985-2005. Our aim is to evaluate spatio-temporal trends and graphical analyses using an Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) interpolation method. The main results from this research can be summarized as follows. The maximum temperature and pH have been stable during the study period and the maximum dissolved oxygen has been increasing gradually until 2002. The minimum pH and dissolved oxygen have been changing in an unsteady trend during the period. A spatial analysis shows that the water temperature in this region has been increasing over time. The pH trend shows that it is decreasing during 1993-2005. Dissolved oxygen concentration has been increasing from 1989 onwards and stays in that track.

  • This study aimed to provide a basic information for managing the water quality of national and regional 1st rivers in Gyeongnam by analyzing the emerging hot spot patterns in BOD, T-P, and TOC, and by grouping the changing trends into clusters. The emerging hot spot analysis for each water quality item was implemented in ArcGIS Desktop with monthly water quality data from 96 water environmental monitoring stations in Gyeongnam, and then four patterns of water quality change were classified by the K-mean cluster analysis. As for BOD, persistent cold spot pattern covered about 42.9% of target rivers, and T-P concentration tended to be low or be getting lower at over 70% of target rivers. While, for TOC, about 70% of target rivers resulted in oscillating hot spots. In addition, the cluster analysis showed that the downstream of Nakdong river had the top priority in terms of water quality management because of the increasing concentration for all the three water quality.

  • This study aims to identify spatio-temporal land price change pattern in Gongju city including the area incorporated and surrounding area depending on the Multifunctional Administrative City Construction. For this, GIS data was built by calculating the average land price each 209 Dong and Ri by the time of the year 2000, 2005 and 2010 based on. The first, the change in the land price was to identify in the 5-year intervals through a kriging interpolation as a kind of geostatistical techniques. The second, a trend analysis was conducted to know directional change pattern of the east-west axis and the north-south axis. Finally, the weighted mean center was calculated by the land price at a weight to examine moving direction on the center point of land price, point of view. The result is that the land price change pattern appeared visible higher growth on the eastern built in the Multifunctional Administrative City, moving direction on the center point of the land price appeared that the phenomenon was concentrated in the northeastern area.

  • This study analyzed the spatio-temporal change detection of land-use and urbanization in Yongin and Anseong regions, Kyunggi Province, using three Landsat-5 TM images for 1990, 1996, and 2000. Remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) techniques were used for image classification and result analysis. Six land-use types were classified using supervised maximum likelihood classification. In the two study areas, the land-use changed significantly, especially the decrease of arable land and forest and increase of built-up area. Spatially, the urban expansion of Yongin region showed a spreading trend mainly along the national road and expressways. But in Anseong region the expansion showed 'urban sprawl phenomenon' with irregular shape like starfish. Temporally, the urban expansion showed disparity - the growth rates of urbanized area rose from the period 1990-1996 to 1996-2000 in both study areas. The increased built-up areas were converted mainly from paddy, dry vegetation, and forest.

  • Objectives: We aimed to estimate the space-time distribution of the risk of suicide mortality in Iran from 2006 to 2016. Methods: In this repeated cross-sectional study, the age-standardized risk of suicide mortality from 2006 to 2016 was determined. To estimate the cumulative and temporal risk, the Besag, York, and Mollié and Bernardinelli models were used. Results: The relative risk of suicide mortality was greater than 1 in 43.0% of Iran's provinces (posterior probability >0.8; range, 0.46 to 3.93). The spatio-temporal model indicated a high risk of suicide in 36.7% of Iran's provinces. In addition, significant upward temporal trends in suicide risk were observed in the provinces of Tehran, Fars, Kermanshah, and Gilan. A significantly decreasing pattern of risk was observed for men (β, -0.013; 95% credible interval [CrI], -0.010 to -0.007), and a stable pattern of risk was observed for women (β, -0.001; 95% CrI, -0.010 to 0.007). A decreasing pattern of suicide risk was observed for those aged 15-29 years (β, -0.006; 95% CrI, -0.010 to -0.0001) and 30-49 years (β, -0.001; 95% CrI, -0.018 to -0.002). The risk was stable for those aged >50 years. Conclusions: The highest risk of suicide mortality was observed in Iran's northwestern provinces and among Kurdish women. Although a low risk of suicide mortality was observed in the provinces of Tehran, Fars, and Gilan, the risk in these provinces is increasing rapidly compared to other regions.

  • In this study, the climatological spatio-temporal variation of strong wind and gust wind in Korea during the period from 1993 to 2018 was analyzed using daily maximum wind speed and daily maximum instantaneous wind speed data recorded at 61 observations. Strong wind and gust wind were defined as 14 m s-1 and 20 m s-1, which are the same as the KMA's criteria of special weather report. The frequency of strong wind and gust wind occurrence was divided into regions with the higher 25 percent (Group A) and the lower 75 percent (Group B). The annual frequency of strong wind and gust wind occurrence tended to be decreased in most parts of the Korean peninsula. In Group A with stations located at coastal region, strong wind and gust wind occurred most frequently in winter with higher frequency at 1200~1600 LST and 2300~2400 LST due to influence of East Asian winter monsoon. In addition, a marked decreasing trend throughout the four seasons was shown at Daegwallyeong, Gunsan and Wando observations. In contrast, it can be found in Group B that the monthly frequency of strong wind and wind gust occurrence was higher in August and September by effect of typhoon and hourly frequency was higher from 1200 LST to 1800 LST.

  • We investigated Soil respiration in Bluepine forest of western Bhutan, in relation to soil temperature, moisture content and soil pH and it was aimed at establishing variability in space and time. The Bluepine forest thrives in the typical shallow dry valleys in the inter-montane Bhutan Himalaya, which is formed by ascending wind from the valley bottom, which carries moisture from the river away to the mountain ridges. Stratified random sampling was applied and the study site was classified into top, mid, low slope and further randomized sample of n=20 from 30 m×30 m from each altitude. The overall soil respiration mean for the forest was found 2248.17 CO2 g yr-1 and it is ~613.58 C g yr-1. The RS from three sites showed a marginal variation amongst sites, lower slope (2,309 m) was 4.64 μ mol m-2 s-1, mid slope (2,631 m) was 6.78 μ mol m-2 s-1 and top slope (3,027 m) was 6.33 μ mol m-2 s-1 and mean of 5.92 μ mol m-2 s-1, SE=0.25 for the forest. Temporal distribution and variations were observed more pronounced than in the space variation. Soil respiration was found highest during March and lowest in September. Soil temperature had almost inverse trend against soil respiration and dropped a low in February and peak in July. The moisture in the soil changed across months with precipitation and pH remained almost consistent across the period. The soil respiration and soil temperature had significant relationship R2=-0.61, p=0.027 and other variables were found insignificant. Similar relationship are reported for dry season in a tropical forest soil respiration. Soil temperature was found to have most pronounced effect on the soil respiration of the forest under study.

  • In order to compare the spatio-temporal variation pattern of sea surface temperature (SST) in Korea's Southern areas of the sea according to a regional scale, this study has selected the winter and summer seasons for 31 years (1980~2010) in a period aspect and selected three areas of the sea such as the Western areas of the sea (region B) and Eastern areas of the sea (region C) around Jeju Island in addition to overall Southern areas of the sea (region A) in regional aspect. The regression analysis was applied to find out a temporal variation pattern of SST, and the weighted mean center (WMC) of SST as well as analysis of a standard deviational ellipse (SDE) was respectively applied. As a result of regression analysis of SST, it showed a rising long-term trend for all two seasons in three regions. However, though the average SST for 31 years was all similar in three regions in the summer season, the region C appeared more highly than region B in the winter season. The spatial variation pattern of SST for two seasons showed that it is respectively different from each other in three regions. The spatial variation pattern of SST appeared as E-W direction in region A, SE-NW direction in region B and SW-NE direction in region C. In addition, the relationship between the location of the WMC of SST and the average SST showed correlation in regions A and B in the winter season, whereas it appeared that there is no correlation in region C. Accordingly, it can be known that the regional scale should be considered in case of analysis of spatio-temporal variation patterns of SST.
