Recent studies on development are increasingly focusing on analyzing development discourse and de constructing its institutionalization process in the nation-state. By pushing up the limit of the research on development, these studies particularly emphasize how development is articulated with the nation-state, its governmentality, and various representations. These studies overall consider development a powerful discourse, which invents under-development, mobilizes resources for changing particular space, and institutionalizes modem systems of socio-spatial control at a local scale. In this sense, it is particularly interesting to look at how the nation-state, faced with the deterritorialization of labor and capital, reterritorializes overseas resources and networks for the purpose of development. By problematizing the Overseas Koreans Foundation as a transnational state apparatus, this paper interrogates the way in which its institutionalized practices conjure up the national imagination, ethnic solidarity, and collective allegiance to the homeland in diaspora communities. This paper conclusively reports that the state apparatus circulates the discourse of transnational nationalism in Korean diaspora so as to appropriate their resources and networks for securing foreign currencies and investment in the homeland.
This study focuses on the genealogical analysis of the urban public spaces by the local history of Seoul which is significantly different from western cities. The analysis targets the discourse of the urban street which defines urban space-structure among the urban public spaces. Based on the analysis, we define the progress levels of urban public design policy in Seoul. Firstly, in 1960's and 1970's, 'urban reconstruction' was intensively carried out for the country modernization, and 'vehicle preferred street expansion' resulted in damages to historical inheritance, in-humanized street, and cultural uniformity. 1980's and 1990's would be defined as 'politic acceptance of plural values to the urban street.' There were the Olympic Games held in Seoul in 1988, which were the celebrations of the 600th capital establishment and the autonomous local government system. In the meanwhile, diverse values on the urban street were discussed in terms of globalization. There also were the self-reflection for the urban skyscrapers and high-population rate, the cultural uniformity of urban street, and the commercialization in downtown with urban reconstruction plans. Then, the sense of landscape and amenity was focused. Various urban projects and regulations were held according to the changes of value recognition. 2000's can be defined as 'introduction to the organic integration and the urban public design governance.' In the 21st century, types of recognition have changed significantly, which include publicness, humanism, sustainability, symbolism, artistry, placeness, and communication. They cause the establishment of ordinances and the installation of integrated organization via urban design administration. The legislation has been revised in order to support the various methods for the maintenance and operation of urban landscape in terms of local characteristics. New regulations were established for residents to participate in the processes of the urban planning with street design policy.
Appreciating the aspect of modem architecture requires not only the comprehension of the nature of design and architects' ways of thinking and expression but also observers' views on buildings and their perceptive/cognitive stages. This calls for an in-depth study on the "system of phenomenological perceptions" that works as a new architectural experience system. The system of phenomenological perceptions makes it possible to specify the individual process of understanding architecture, that is, hands-on experiences, participations, feelings, perceptions, and cognition. The value of user experience and cognition has been emphasized by philosophical and aesthetical concepts as well. Therefore, in order to better appreciate the modern architecture, this study suggests theoretical consideration to "orientation and event" that are crucial elements in understanding a phenomenological view and materializing actual space formation. This offers the cognitive system with which we analyze modem architecture and comprehensive expressional methods. In other words, this study contemplates the system of phenomenological perceptions from an existential spatial perspective by structurizing the system of the orientation and the event in order to segmentalize users' current locations, potential directions, the relations with spaces, continual vie'wpoints as well as buildings' functions and interior and exterior division. The system of phenomenological perceptions helps understand and systemize modern architecture through a system based on relations between sensation, perception, cognition, sensitivity, and rationality. This creates a new cognitive system employing the concept of the orientation and the event, which is different from a normal cognitive system basing on the sense of vision. When observers appreciate space, they tend to relate the space to a certain event and to remember their experiences in it. During the process, they draw borders of the space in which the event takes place and give shape to their experiences including actions, movements, cognition and sensation. The process leads to the formation of "placeness," and here, the concept of the orientation comes in as the location and the center of the placeness. This study proves that a determined orientation coupled with individual experience and events settles the place ness; detailed elements in the cognitive system have close relations with one another; the orientation, actions, events, and places are the factors that materialize observers' architectural experience.
This paper presents a superresolution demosaicing technique that can restore high-resolution color image from differently blurred low resolution images in Bayer domain. The proposed superresolution demosaicing algorithm uses an aperture mask wheel to get differently blurred low resolution images, so we just need to estimate point spread function at each frame. In addition, it does not require image registration because there is no translational motion between low resolution images. By using a rotatable aperture mask wheel, consecutive captured images provide sufficiently exclusive information for superresolution. Therefore, the proposed method can reduce the registration error between the low-resolution image as well as the calculation amount for superresolution restoration. The existing lens system of the camera can be extended to obtain a superresolution image by only adding an rotatable aperture mask wheels. Finally, in order to verify the performance of the proposed system, experimental results are performed. The proposed method showed the significant improvements in the sense of spatial and color resolution.

The design of multi-stage gear drives is a time-consuming process, since on includes more complicated problems, which are not considered in the design of single-stage gear drives. The designer has th determine the number of reduction stages and the gear ratios of each reduction state. In addition, the design problems include not only the dimensional design but also the configuration design of gear drive elements. There is no definite rule and principle for these types of design problems. Thus the design practices largely depend on the sense and the experiences of the designer , and consequently result in undesirable design solution. We propose a new generalized design algorithm to support the designer at the preliminary design phase of multi-stage gear drives. The proposed design algorithm automates the design process by integrating the dimensional design and the configuration design process. The algorithm consists of four steps. In the first step, a designer determines the number of reduction stage. In the second step. gear ratios se chosen by using the random search method. In the third step, the values of basic design parameter are chosen by using the generate and test method. Then, the values of other dimension, such ad pitch diameter, outer diameter, and face width, are calculated for the configuration design in the final step. The strength and durability of a gear is guaranteed by the bending strength and the pitting resistance rating practices by using the AGMA rating formulas. In the final step, the configuration design is carried out b using the simulated annealing algorithm. The positions of gears and shafts are determined to minimize the geometrical volume(size) of a gearbox, while satisfying spatial constraints between them. These steps are carried out iteratively until a desirable solution is acquired. The propose design algorithm has been applied to the preliminary design of four-stage gear drives in order to validate the availability. The design solution have shown considerably good results in both aspects of the dimensional and the configuration design.
'Pattern' is the term that is frequently used in the aspects of history, society, and science. It always appears in the remains or relics of the age of civilization when recording was started, and its evaluation and value differ by time. Patterns in the ancient civilization were symbolic, social, and spatially crucial. However, after the modernization, they were considered to be immoral and unnecessary, so the range of their significance came to reduce. Due to the development of science, ornament patterns lost the limitation of its range of use along with new interpretation of them. Especially with the advent of new scientific theories such as the evolution theory from the biological aspect, quantum mechanics, and super string theory, morphological possibilities more than the human scale perceived by men came to be discovered. Living organisms maintain their lives through patterns, structures, and processes in order to produce a system alive. Among them, patterns are the organization of relations determining the characteristics of the system. The present patterns may correspond to this meaning. The pattern in a space is the matter of how to relate the components after all. In a space, however, there are numerous components mingled with one another. If these tasks are conducted as analogue work, it will take a lot of time and effort. However, if digital media are utilized to perform the tasks like analysis, generation, or fabrication, it will produce a result with higher precision and efficiency. In this sense, parametric modeling is quite useful media. Opening morphological variation, it realizes more possibilities, connects conveniently the relations between complex components composing a space, and helps produce creative patterns.
The layer technique is to produce many memorable scenes by generating layers of new experiences on the existing ones as it is adding the cognitive layers on to the visually seen landscape. Its need is high for places whose landscape itself influences perception, value or expression and which determines the spatial and quality standards. The existing floor plan-based design methods have failed to be useful in generating complex visual experiences. In order to maximize the aesthetical landscape experiences in landscape planning, cognitive layers are needed which complement the input of adequate cognitive elements and the inter-element relationships. Here, layers are utilized to change the arrangement of the landscape elements and coordinate the cognitive flow so that the images could be connected and imagination could occur. A case in point is Anhyun Village in Gochang where physically distinctive layers are additionally set to make a visual experience enriching. The new landscape layers discover the fact that it provides diversity in experiencing the village landscape and forming the sense of beauty and that it is deeply immersed into the daily life of the village. Meanwhile, Guwau Village in Taebaek is an example showing the usefulness of various-layer setting in landscape planning in setting effective circulation planning. That is, the bottom line is the spacing-starting where and making it stay where for a few seconds, and the visual layers. It is also critical to encourage inducing circulation so that layers of the senses stimulating five senses could intervene. Lastly, Mulgeon-ri in Namhae is a case which directly made a parallel of the physical layers of the landscape composition and the cognitive layers of the landscape experience. This study aims to improve plans by analyzing spatial compositions of cohousing common houses, their role depending on the types of users and spaces, and satisfaction from the user-oriented design perspective. For this study, a basic concept was examined based on previous studies and literature reviews. So-Haeng-Ju(Happy House with Communication) Houses 1, 2, and 3 in Seongmisan Village was analyzed. As well, interviews with residents of these houses were conducted to analyze the role of user behavior in common house depending on the types of users and spaces. As a result, it was found that there were common characteristics of roles in an exchange with neighbors, cooperative child-care, and residents' meetings. The time and behavioral types were different depending on the living patterns, characteristics, and family members of residents. User satisfaction with the locations of community facilities including communal kitchen and communal living room, the composition of rooms, communication with residents, and the connection between communal living space and personal living space, was above the average. However, user satisfaction with storage facilities, or defect repair and facility maintenance was low. Most of cohousing common house users were satisfied with the use and size of spaces, and a sense of community, including communication with neighbors beyond the environment and Seongmisan Village. In conclusion, a realistic alternative is required for future cohousing by developing a system regarding human resources networks and cost bearing issues.
The change towards meeting diverse customer needs has started to affect the hotel industry as well. Design hotels emerged as customers demanded differentiated lodging experiences they could not fulfill at franchise hotels which were uniform in style everywhere in the world. Design hotels are meant to provide a new concept of space through unique design sensibility and work of designers, which highlighted the role of interior design. This research analyzes the characteristics of indoor space expressed in design hotel common spaces by the French designer Andree Putman, also known as the founder of boutique hotels and the concept of design hotels. As the original founder of the concept of design hotels, Putman's scope of work stretches wide, from interior design to product design. She is also one of the few French designers with a modernist inclination. The research runs a review on previous literature, characteristics of design hotels according to design tendency, and the association with characteristics of indoor space designed by Andree Putman, followed by case analyses extracted by analyses on design characteristics of common spaces she has designed. The analysis reveals that she creates comfortable yet elegant space, using contrast and fusion arising from negotiation of design styles to interpret space, the sense of spatial balance and understated expression of order through symmetrical structures, diverse creation of space through geometric structuring, highlighting indoor space by utilizing lights as objects, and the heterogeneous harmony achieved by contrasting juxtaposition, and understated formativeness. It is expected that study results would be utilized as methods of new designs of interior space in design hotels.
The 21st century is a multiplication age and social and cultural phenomena have become diverse and peoples' desires and individuality have become important. Accordingly, the sensibility that reflects human taste is also required in the exhibition space. The exhibitions in this age induce the direct cognition of senses or take interactive forms that contact diverse media and react. The purpose of this research is to define the concept of haptic presentation method in which the audience perceive in the exhibition space by themselves and the visual elements spread into other senses and perceive complexly, and to present the directional nature. To conduct this research, first, this researcher recognized that haptic sensory experiential research by analyzing the roles and transition history of exhibition space is needed for the present age Second, based on philosophical theories, four haptic sensory expression characteristics (medium nature, experiential nature, attractiveness, sensitiveness) were derived by substituting Giles Deleuze's four haptic spatial characteristics (grasping short distance, dispersed gaze, cognition of bodily movement, formation of synesthesia through complex senses) and six formative factors of exhibition space (space, form, size, light, quality of materials, and color). And the effective exhibition presentation methods were analyzed through six cases of experiential exhibition spaces. Accordingly, what matters in the experiential exhibition space is to produce the four characteristics: medium nature, experientiality, attractiveness, and sensitiveness in equilibrium. It is necessary for the designers to reflect it appropriately in producing so that the audience can think and experience by themselves. Accordingly, in this thesis, it could be seen that to produce the haptic production characteristics in the experiential exhibition space in equilibrium is the important factor in the experiential exhibition space. In conclusion, experiences in the exhibition space should be approached with the transcendental haptic presentation method by which even the space of actually unexperienced cognition can be expanded and experienced through the metastasis and tension of various senses. Also, researches on such senses should be developed continuously, and this researcher expects that this will become a stimulant to present a new directivity.
