  • Recently, numerous small area estimation studies have been conducted to obtain more detailed and accurate estimation results. Most of these studies have employed spatial regression models, which require a clear definition of spatial neighborhoods. In this study, we introduce the Delaunay triangulation as a method to define spatial neighborhood, and compare this method with the k-nearest neighbor method. A simulation was conducted to determine which of the two methods is more efficient in defining spatial neighborhood, and we demonstrate the performance of the proposed method using a land price data.

  • A region merging technique is suggested in this paper for the segmentation of high-spatial resolution imagery. It employs a region growing scheme based on the region adjacency graph (RAG). The proposed algorithm uses directional neighbor-line average feature vectors to improve the quality of segmentation. The feature vector consists of 9 components which includes an observation and 8 directional averages. Each directional average is the average of the pixel values along the neighbor line for a given neighbor line length at each direction. The merging coefficients of the segmentation process use a part of the feature components according to a given merging coefficient order. This study performed the extensive experiments using simulation data and a real high-spatial resolution data of IKONOS. The experimental results show that the new approach proposed in this study is quite effective to provide segments of high quality for the object-based analysis of high-spatial resolution images.

  • In multimedia database systems, the nearest neighbor Query occurs frequently and requires the processing cost higher than other spatial Queries do. It needs the measurement of search distance that the number of searched nodes and the computation time in an index can be minimized for optimizing the cost of processing the nearest neighbor query. The circular location property of objects is considered to accurately select the nodes which will be searched in the nearest neighbor query. In this paper, we propose the processing method of nearest neighbor queries be considered a circular location property of object where the search space consists of a circular domain and show its characteristics. The proposed method uses the circular minimum distance and the circular optimal distance, the search measurement for optimizing the processing cost of nearest neighbor queries.

  • Recently, the query processing algorithm in the field of spatial network database(SNDB) has been attracted by many Interests. But, there is little research on route-based queries. Since the moving objects move only in spatial networks, the efficient route-based query processing algorithms, like in-route nearest neighbor(IRNN), are essential for Location-based Service(LBS) and Telematics application. However, the existing IRNN query processing algorithm has a problem that it does not consider traffic jams in the road network. In this thesis, we propose an IRNN query processing algorithm which considers space restriction. Finally, we show that space-constrained IRNN query processing algorithm is efficient compared with the existing IRNN algorithm.

  • Among spatial queries handled in spatial database systems, nearest neighbor queries to find the nearest spatial object from the given locaion occur frequently. The number of searched nodes in an index must be minimized in order to increase the performance of nearest neighbor queries. An Existing approach considered only the processing of an nearest neighbor query in a two-dimensional search space and could not optimize the number of searched nodes accurately. In this paper, we propose the optimal search distance and prove its properties. The proposed optimal search distance is the measurement of a new search distance for accurately selecting the nodes which will be searched in processing nearest neighbor queries. We present an algorithm for processing the nearest neighbor query by applying the optimal search distance to R-trees and prove that the result of query processing is correcter than the existing approach.

  • This study analyzed the water shortage hotspot areas in South Korea using spatial clustering analysis for water shortage estimates in 2030 of the Master Plans for National Water Management. To identify the water shortage cluster areas, we used water shortage data from the past maximum drought (about 50-year return period) and performed spatial clustering analysis using Local Moran's I and Getis-Ord Gi*. The areas subject to spatial clusters of water shortage were selected using the cluster map, and the spatial characteristics of water shortage areas were verified based on the p-value and the Moran scatter plot. The results indicated that one cluster (lower Imjin River (#1023) and neighbor) in the Han River basin and two clusters (Daejeongcheon (#2403) and neighbor, Gahwacheon (#2501) and neighbor) in the Nakdong River basin were found to be the hotspot for water shortage, whereas one cluster (lower Namhan River (#1007) and neighbor) in the Han River Basin and one cluster (Byeongseongcheon (#2006) and neighbor) in the Nakdong River basin were found to be the HL area, which means the specific area have high water shortage and neighbor have low water shortage. When analyzing spatial clustering by standard watershed unit, the entire spatial clustering area satisfied 100% of the statistical criteria leading to statistically significant results. The overall results indicated that spatial clustering analysis performed using standard watersheds can resolve the variable spatial unit problem to some extent, which results in the relatively increased accuracy of spatial analysis.

  • Recently, to support LBS(location-based services) and telematics applications efficiently, there have been many researches which consider the spatial network instead of Euclidean space. However, existing range query and k-nearest neighbor query algorithms show a linear decrease in performance as the value of radius and k is increased. In this paper, to increase the performance of query processing algorithm, we propose materialization-based range and k-nearest neighbor algorithms. In addition, we make the performance comparison to show the proposed algorithm achieves better retrieval performance than the existing algorithm.

  • It is occurred frequently the reverse nearest neighbor queries to find objects where a query point can be the nearest neighbor object in recently applications like the encrypted spatial database. In a search space of the real world, however, there are many physical obstacles(e.g., rivers, lakes, highways, etc.). It is necessary the accurate measurement of distances considered the obstacles to increase the retrieval performance such as this circumstance. In this study, we present the algorithm and the measurement of distance to optimize the processing performance of reverse nearest neighbor queries in a search space with the presence of obstacles.

  • Approximate k-nearest neighbor queries are frequently occurred for finding the k nearest neighbors to a given query point in spatial database systems. The number of searched nodes in an index must be minimized in order to increase the performance of approximate k nearest neighbor queries. In this paper. we suggest the technique of approximate k nearest neighbor queries on R-tree family by improving the existing algorithm and evaluate the performance of the proposed method in dynamic spatial database environments. The simulation results show that a proposed method always has a low number of disk access irrespective of object distribution, size of nearest neighbor queries and approximation rates as compared with an existing method.
