Design and Implementation of Crime Analysis GIS (범죄분석 지리정보시스템의 설계와 구현)

  • It is important to scrutinize spatial patterns in crime analysis since crime data has geographical attribute in itself. We focus on the development of ¨Crime Analysis GIS¨ prototype which can discover spatial patterns in crime data by integrating mapping functions of GIS and spatial analysis techniques. The structure of this system involves integration of DBMS and GIS, and the major functions of the system include (i) exploring spatial distribution of point data, (ii) mapping hot-spot, (iii) clustering analysis of crime occurrence, and (iv) analyzing aggregated areal data. The process of design and implementation of this system is based on object-oriented methodologies. A web-based extension of the prototype using 3-tier architecture is currently under development.

Notes on fine-scale spatial distribution of three Cephalanthera species (Orchidaceae) that grow in sympatry in Korea: Implications for maintenance of species boundaries (동소적으로 서식하는 은대난초속 3종(난과)의 미세 공간 분포에 대한 참고 사항: 종의 경계 유지에 대한 암시)

  • The three self-compatible, terrestrial orchids Cephalanthera erecta, C. falcata, and C. longibracteata flower synchronously in sympatric populations. Cephalanthera erecta and C. longibracteata, which have white flowers that do not fully open, are predominantly autogamous, whereas the food-deceptive C. falcata, whose bright yellow flowers open completely, is predominantly outcrossing. The formation of hybrids rarely occurs between species owing to strong prepollination barriers (floral isolation). If these three species have evolved toward the prevention of interspecific hybridization, we can expect that the spatial distribution patterns of the three species would be characterized as spatial segregation (i.e., 'spatial repulsion') from each other. To test this prediction, we studied the three Cephalanthera species in sympatric populations showing coincident flowering within Yeonwhasan Provincial Park (YPP, Gyeongsangnam Province, South Korea). We found strong spatial aggregation in each population and spatial independence in the interspecific spatial distribution, differing from previous studies. We further hypothesize that Cephalanthera species in sympatry within YPP are distributed somewhat randomly in space, perhaps due to the sharing of similar mycorrhizal fungi.

Evaluating Cross-correlation of GOSAT CO2 Concentration with MODIS NDVI Patterns in North-East Asia (동북아시아에서 GOSAT CO2와 MODIS 식생지수 분포의 상관성 분석)

  • The purpose of this work is to investigate correlation between $CO_2$ concentration and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) in North East Asia. Geographically weighted regression techniques were used to evaluate the spatial relationships between GOSAT (Greenhouse Observing SATellite) $CO_2$ measurement and MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) vegetation index. The results reveals that $CO_2$ concentration to be negatively associated with NDVI. The analysis of Global Morans' I index and Anselin Local Morasn's I showed spatial autocorrelation between the overall spatial pattern of $CO_2$ and NDVI. Ultimately, there were clustered patterns in both data sets. The results show that carbon dioxide concentration shows non-random distribution patterns in relation to NDVI clusters, which proves that intense development activities such as deforestation are influencing carbon dioxide emission across the area of analysis. However, as the concentration of carbon dioxide varies depending on a variety of factors such as artificial sources, plant respiration, and the absorption and discharge of the ocean, follow-up studies are required to evaluate the correlations among more related variables.

Spatial Point-pattern Analysis of a Population of Lodgepole Pine

  • Spatial point-patterns analyses were conducted to provide insight into the ecological process behind competition and mortality in two lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia Engelm.) stands, one in the Lower Foothills, and the other in the Upper Foothills natural subregions in the boreal forest of Alberta, Canada. Spatial statistical tests were applied to live and dead trees and included Clark-Evans nearest neighbor statistic (R), nearest neighbor distribution function (G(r)), and a variant of Ripley's K function (L(r)). In both lodgepole pine plots, the results indicated that there was significant regularity in the spatial point-pattern of the surviving trees which indicates that competition has been a key driver of mortality and forest dynamics in these plots. Dead trees generally showed a clumping pattern in higher density patches. There were also significant bivariate relationships between live and dead trees, but the relationships differed by natural subregion. In the Lower Foothills plot there was significant attraction between live and dead tees which suggests mainly one-sided competition for light. In contrast, in the Upper Foothills plot, there was significant repulsion between live and dead trees which suggests two-sided competition for soil nutrients and soil moisture.

Mining Trip Patterns in the Large Trip-Transaction Database and Analysis of Travel Behavior (대용량 교통카드 트랜잭션 데이터베이스에서 통행 패턴 탐사와 통행 행태의 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to propose mining processes in the large trip-transaction database of the Metropolitan Seoul area and to analyze the spatial characteristics of travel behavior. For the purpose. this study introduces a mining algorithm developed for exploring trip patterns from the large trip-transaction database produced every day by transit users in the Metropolitan Seoul area. The algorithm computes trip chains of transit users by using the bus routes and a graph of the subway stops in the Seoul subway network. We explore the transfer frequency of the transit users in their trip chains in a day transaction database of three different years. We find the number of transit users who transfer to other bus or subway is increasing yearly. From the trip chains of the large trip-transaction database, trip patterns are mined to analyze how transit users travel in the public transportation system. The mining algorithm is a kind of level-wise approaches to find frequent trip patterns. The resulting frequent patterns are illustrated to show top-ranked subway stations and bus stops in their supports. From the outputs, we explore the travel patterns of three different time zones in a day. We obtain sufficient differences in the spatial structures in the travel patterns of origin and destination depending on time zones. In order to examine the changes in the travel patterns along time, we apply the algorithm to one day data per year since 2004. The results are visualized by utilizing GIS, and then the spatial characteristics of travel patterns are analyzed. The spatial distribution of trip origins and destinations shows the sharp distinction among time zones.

A Quantitative Analysis of the Spatial Agglomeration Pattern among the Korean Cities (한국 도시들의 공간집적 패턴에 대한 계량분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the spatial distributional characteristics of industries among the Korean cities and to conduct industry classification using the findings. For this purpose, 82 cities in Korea are investigated with respect to 15 industrial sectors. In the analysis, concentration of and association between industries are recognized using both geographic and non-geographic measures. In order to measure concentration and association, locational Gini coefficient, Moran's I, correlation coefficient, and bivatiate Moran are used and 15 industrial sectors are classified based on these estimates. The findings reveal that the chemical sector shows strong geographic and non-geographic concentrations while the assembly, machinery and electronics sector only shows a strong geographic concentration. Printing and publishing, wholesale, and business services show a strong non-geographic association with other sectors. The remaining ten sectors show no explicit distribution patterns among cities. This study contributes to providing the methodology that analyzes the spatial distribution patterns of industries in a comprehensive way and is able to provide useful information in implementing industrial location policies including industrial clusters.

Analysis of Urban Surface Temperature Distribution Properties Using Spatial Information Technologies (공간정보기술을 활용한 도시지역 지표온도 분포 특성 해석)

  • In this study, surface temperature which was extracted from Landsat TM band 6 was compared and analyzed with the AWS(Automatic Weather System) observation data for studying urban heat environment properties with possibility of remote sensing data application. In order to verification of the distribution properties of urban surface temperature, correlation analysis between surface temperature and NDVI, the distribution properties of urban surface temperature by land use/cover patterns were carried out by GIS spatial analysis techniques. The results presented that the spatial distribution of urban surface temperature was very different depending on various land use/cover patterns of surrounding areas. Also there was the reverse linear relationship between surface temperature and NDVI. These results will be worked as one of the major factors for environmentally sustainable urban planning considering the characteristics of weather environments in the near future.

Intra- and Inter-plant Distribution of Helicoverpa assulta (Lepioprera: Noctuidae) eggs in Red Pepper and Tobacco Fields (고추와 담배포장에서의 담배나방 알의 공간분포 및 기주식물내 분포)

  • The Spatial distribution pattems of the oriental tobacco budworm (OTB), Helicoverpa assuita, eggs w were studied in red pepper and tobacco fields. With a plant as a sample Unit. Taylor's power law analyses indicated that om egg spatial patterns were clumped in red pepper fields (a=1.3914, b = 1.1648) and were unifom in tobacco fields (a = 1.6035, b = 0.6880). In red peppers om eggs w were found in leaves (76.2%), fruits (16.8%), stems (6.5%), and flowers (0.4%). The upper leaf surface ( (70.1 %) contained sianificantly more eggs than the lower surface (25.2%). In tobaccos most eggs were also found in leaves.   • A Korean endemic and evergreen small tree ' Dendropanax morbifera $L_{EV}$.(Araliaceae)' is a component of evergreen forest and mainly idstributein sourthern region and islands in Korea. A local population of D. morbifera which is located between evergreen and deciduous forest within 50m x 50m quadrate was investigated to ascertain the change of population structure, emergence and growth dynamics of seedlings and saplings, and pattern of spatial distribution by the temproal and spatial expansion of population . The result of analysis of population structure by Importnace Value(IV), evergreen forest showed a high species diversity of evergreen tree species such as Cinnamomum japonicum, Machilus japonica, Neolitsea serica, Daphniphyllum macropodum, Ligustrum japonicum, and etc, in middle and under story than in upper story where Camelia japonica and Quercus acuta were dominant. And in conterminous deciduous fores, the major component of evergreen forest in this region, Camellia japonica, Quercus acuta, evergreen tree of Lauraceae and etc. were abundant in only under story. IV of D. morbifera differed from among three story. In comparative analysis of emergence and growth dynamics of D. morbifera seedlings and saplings between evergreen and deciduous forest, emergece and density of seedlings were significantly greater in evergreen than in deciduous forest, and growth of height and basal diameter of seedlings and saplings were slightly larger in evergreen than in deciduous forest. The spatial distribution patterns by Moristia's index mapping of indivuduals using a lattice method of XY axis within this population showed that seedlings(age up to 2 years) and saplings (age>2 years and height<1m) both evergreen and deciduous forest were more or less aggregated apart from mature trees, and thougth intermediate trees(height>1m and dbh<10cm) had a aggregated distribution pattern, mature trees(dbh>10cm were uniform. In conclusion , the expansion of D. morbfera population from evergreen to deciduous forest accompanied with a mumber of evergreen woody species, and also, emergence and recruitment, and growth of seedlings were greatly influenced moisture and canopy by around community structure.

  • This research has a purpose to achieve experimental data used for design of ventilation systems necessary for indoor air quality control and their operation and management. For the study, spatial concentration distribution of indoor air quality according to pollutant site in a simplified model chamber. In low flow ventilation, flow pattern of indoor air was mainly influenced by diffusion and additionally, spatial distribution was formed by convection. Distribution of ventilation efficiency according to each pattern of model chamber was evaluated. It was confirmed that diffusion patterns of a pollutant among sites were formed, centering around main stream areas of supply and exhaust outlets.
