Because the speed limit affects moving speed, it is closely related to traffic accidents as well as traffic flow. The existing speed limit calculation methods consider various engineering factors such as lanes, intersection spacing, driveways, crosswalks, 85 percentile speed, land uses, and roadway geometric characteristics etc. However, it can be said that the engineering analysis is insufficient because the traffic impact analysis considering traffic volume is not carried out. In addition, only 85 percentile speed, which is the spot speed, does not reflect the characteristics of the traffic flow on the road. In this paper, the effect of the speed limit change on the moving speed and the travel speed was analyzed in detail accordinr to the variation of intersection spacing and traffic volume. And by using the results, we proposed a speed limit calculation method that maintains the same service level as before the speed limit change, thereby increasing the speed improvement effect and reducing the difference between moving speed and travel speed. In addition, a variable speed limit operation method according to the change in traffic volume was also suggested. This method is expected to be effective in terms of safety by reducing the speed difference, which affects the severity of traffic accidents, while securing the speed improvement effect, and increasing the speed limit compliance rate of drivers by operating the speed limit that reflects the speed change due to the variation of traffic volume.
Air void systems in hardened concrete has an important influence on concrete durability such as freeze-thaw resistance, water permeability, surface scaling resistance. Linear traverse method and point count method described at ASTM are the routine analysis of the air void system that have been widely used to estimate the spacing factor in hardened concrete. Recently, many concretes often have a spacing factor higher than the generally accepted $200-250{\mu}m$ limit for the usual range of air contents. This study is proposed to estimate the plane spacing factor by calculation of simplicity. The plane spacing factor need two parameters that are air content and numbers of air voids in the hardened concrete. Those obtained from the standard air-void system analysis of the ASTM C 457. The equation is valid for all values of paste-to-air ratio because the estimation of paste content is unnecessary at the using ASTM C 457. The plane spacing factor yields a similar estimate of the standard spacing factor.

In this study, the combustion characteristics were investigated with the variation of design factors on multiple slit gas burner. The design factors consist of slit height, width, spacing, and inner length. The combustion characteristics were made analysis of the CO emission and NOx emission by using CO analyzer and NOx analyzer. The lower perimeter to area and the narrow spacing extends the lift-flame limit. The CO emission increases with the increasing perimeter to area ratio at the same condition. The NOx emission is found to be less significant with the port perimeter to area ratio. The flame interference might highly depend on the spacing and port perimeter to area ratio, and it also affects the burner performance.
The horizontal pullout capacity of a group of two vertical strip plate anchors, placed along the same vertical plane, in a fully cohesive soil has been computed by using the lower bound finite element limit analysis. The effect of spacing between the plate anchors on the magnitude of total group failure load ($P_{uT}$) has been evaluated. An increase of soil cohesion with depth has also been incorporated in the analysis. For a weightless medium, the total pullout resistance of the group becomes maximum corresponding to a certain optimum spacing between the anchor plates which has been found to vary generally between 0.5B and B; where B is the width of the anchor plate. As compared to a single plate anchor, the increase in the pullout resistance for a group of two anchors becomes greater at a higher embedment ratio. The effect of soil unit weight has also been analyzed. It is noted that the interference effect on the pullout resistance increases further with an increase in the unit weight of soil mass.

Influences of microstructure on high-cycle fatigue (HCF) limit of high carbon $(>0.7wt.\;\%)$ steel filaments used for tires have been investigated. A series of the fatigue tests was carried out depending on carbon content by using Hunter-type tester at a frequency of 60 Hz at a tension/compression stress of 900 to 1500 MPa. Microstructural changes of the filaments were identified in the lateral direction by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the mechanical properties, such as fatigue limit and tensile strength, were improved with increasing carbon content, which was mainly attributed to decreased lamellar spacing and cementite thickness. However, the fatigue ratio, which is defined as the ratio of the fatigue limit to the tensile strength, was reduced in a higher carbon range of 0.8 to $0.9\;wt.\%$, while the fatigue ratio was nearly constant in a lower carbon range of 0.7 to $0.8\;wt.\%$. Overall mechanical properties of the filaments, depending on carbon content, have been discussed in terms of the microstructural parameter change of lamellar spacing and cementite thickness. In addition, the variation of cementite morphology on the fatigue crack propagation of high carbon $(0.9wt.\;\%)$ filaments will be discussed.
In this paper, the effect of different steel bar configurations on the quasi-static punching and impact response of concrete slabs was studied. A total of forty RC square slab specimens were cast in two groups of concrete strengths of 40 and 63 MPa. In each group of twenty specimens, ten specimens were reinforced at the back face (singly reinforced), and the remaining specimens were reinforced on both faces of the slab (doubly reinforced). Two rebar spacing of 25 and 100 mm, with constant reinforcement ratio and effective depth, were used in both singly and doubly reinforced slab specimens. The specimens were tested against the normal impact of cylindrical projectiles of hemispherical nose shape. Slabs were also quasi-statically tested in punching using the same projectile, which was employed for the impact testing. The experimental response illustrates that 25 mm spaced rebars are effective in (i) decreasing the local damage and overall penetration depth, (ii) increasing the absorption of impact energy, and (iii) enhancing the ballistic limit of RC slabs. The ballistic limit was predicted using the quasi-static punching test results of slab specimens showing a strong correlation between the dynamic perforation energy and the energy required for quasi-static perforation of slabs.

In this study, the effects of design factors of finned-tube heat exchanger, such as fin spacing and fin array on the frost growth and heat exchanger performance are investigated under a frosting condition. The results show that the amount of frost, frost density and blockage ratio of air flow passage increase with decreasing fin spacing. Heat transfer rate increases momentarily at the initial stage of frosting and then decreases. After that heat transfer rate continues to increase again to reach a maximum value and then decreases dramatically. It is shown that the time required for heat transfer rate to reach a maximum value becomes shorter with decreasing fin spacing, and after a maximum value, heat transfer rate decreases very fast. The maximum allowable blockage ratio is introduced to determine the operation limit of a finned-tube heat exchanger operating under frosting condition and is obtained as a function of fin spacing. It is also shown that heat transfer rate of heat exchanger with staggered fin array increases about 17% and the amount of pressure drop of air increases about 1~2 mmH$_{2}$O, compared with those of in-line type heat exchanger under frosting condition.
PURPOSES : In this study, the propriety of expansion joint spacing of airport concrete pavement was examined by using weather and material characteristics. METHODS : A finite element model for simulating airport concrete pavement was developed and blowup occurrence due to temperature increase was analyzed. The critical temperature causing the expansion of concrete slab and blow up at the expansion joint was calculated according to the initial vertical displacement at the joint. The amount of expansion that can occur in the concrete slab for 20 years of design life was calculated by summing the expansion and contraction by temperature, alkali-silica reaction, and drying shrinkage. The effective expansion of pavement section between adjacent expansion joints was calculated by subtracting the effective width of expansion joint from the summation of the expansion of the pavement section. The temperature change causing the effective expansion of pavement section was also calculated. The effective expansion equivalent temperature change was compared to the critical temperature, which causes the blowup, according to expansion joint spacing to verify the propriety of expansion joint applied to the airport concrete pavement. RESULTS : When an initial vertical displacement of the expansion joint was 3mm or less, the blowup never occurred for 300m of joint spacing which is used in Korean airports currently. But, there was a risk of blow-up when an initial vertical displacement of the expansion joint was 5mm or more due to the weather or material characteristics. CONCLUSIONS : It was confirmed that the intial vertical displacement at the expansion joint could be managed below 3mm from the previous research results. Accordingly it was concluded that the 300m of current expansion joint spacing of Korean airports could be used without blowup by controling the alkali-silica reaction below its allowable limit.
In this study, in order to investigate the effects of reinforcement length and vertical spacing on the factor of safety, the road embankment reinforced by geogrid was analyzed using RSS(Reinforced Slope Stability) program based on limit equilibrium analysis. The result by computer analysis showed that the factor of safety for reinforced slope increased with increasing length of reinforcement and with decreasing vertical spacing of reinforcement up to certain limit. Also, numerical analysis by FLAC was performed on reinforced slope to evaluate the horizontal displacement, horizontal stress, and distribution of tensile forces of reinforcements in the cases of several reinforcement length. The results of analysis showed that the critical failure mode was toe failure or slope failure and the effect by the additional reinforcement length on the slope stability was negligible under stabilized condition.
In this paper, we introduced phase optimization techniques in the Soil-Nail design to optimize the reinforcement required for each grade level. The optimal design results at the maximum slope height were further amplified to allow for phase optimization of the horizontal spacing of the Nail in accordance with the change in the height of the slope. The limit equilibrium analysis was performed by step-by-step sloping height, and the safety factor exceeded when the horizontal spacing of four days was fixed. The process of optimization was effectively carried out by densifying the required reinforcement depending on the slope elevation. Also limited to reflect the axial force of the nail into the reinforcement details.Using the method, the members' strength was reflected. When phase optimization technique is applied for each slope height by calculating the stiffening precision, it is judged that it will be more economical to optimize horizontal intervals by effectively reducing the repeated reinterpretation process that satisfies the reference safety ratio for each slope height.
